In theory, the purpose of having citizens vote is so that the person put in office represents those citizens. The more stipulations you put on who is able to vote, the less effective an election becomes in choosing a representative for the population as a whole.

Literacy tests naw, but poll taxes sure. Charge fifty bucks and every pseudo activist at uni won't vote. Then use the money to supplement social security. win win

Fine, increase the age restriction to 23. Back in the day, 18 year olds were paying their fair share, now they aren't. The law is outdated.

If you're going to cut out people who don't pay taxes, why not just make everyone's vote equal to their taxes and go all the way?

You pay 5,000 in taxes? Your vote is worth half as much as someone who pays 10,000.

Someone who pays 100,000 would then have 10 times the voting power of someone who pays 10,000.

Kind of a way to achieve a completely regressive flat tax, by giving that person the voting power of multiple people.

Of course, the poor are not just dollar bills. So this (and TC's idea) doesn't work. You can't measure a person's worth by their tax burden.

Are you legally identified as a citizen? Born in the country, or fully immigrated? Legally able to acquire a driver's license, apply for an ID and/or buy alcohol?

If so, then you should be able to vote.

If you're a citizen, then you get to vote on who your nation's leader is going to be. It affects you, and you get to have your say, regardless on how "desirable" you are as a demographic.

why would you base voting on such trivial things? I simply want voting to be restricted to people who contribute.

So what's it like to spend your entire life on the internet, never interacting with the peons who work minimum? I mean, you say they don't contribute, so I know you wouldn't feel comfortable taking advantage of their services by shopping, or buying fast food or anything like that.

Right. I'm just taking your bad idea to its more accurate extreme.

People who pay little taxes, get almost no voting power.

People who pay a lot of taxes, get a lot of voting power.

I'm just using your rationale.

Ha, right. That's an even further extreme.

Imagine, you get sick... you take disability or other services.

BOOM

All of a sudden, your vote doesn't matter anymore.

You took more funds than you put back in taxes.
