I like everything between seasons 3 and 8 is great, but my favorite overall might be season 5. I think that had the best exaggerated facial expressions, though sometimes the goofy animation was just weird. Seasons 6-8 were still great too, a little cleaner and more consistent but there was still enough character to it.

Season 10 and some parts of season 9 are where I feel like it definitely went downhill. The characters started becoming even more uniform, which took away a lot of the charm. Whenever they switched to doing things digitally (I think 13 or 14) it really became awful because everything was so stiff and sterile, and for some reason they decided to make the characters this ugly mustard yellow instead of a pure, primary-color yellow.

This is from season 5, I think it really exemplifies how the aesthetics of the animation made things funnier back then:

The way they changed Marge's animation in the opening sequence best exemplifies what you're talking about.

Look at Homer's face when the bee bites his bottom though. It's hilarious.

Or look at this - they would never do something like this nowadays:

No, they're just cheap/lazy and it's harder to do stuff like that with computer animation... I guess. I feel like they probably could still use computer animation that's not so robotic, but it most likely would still make things more difficult

Well, I'm not an animation expert, but I think the way it works is that the computer fills in stuff between the keyframes... so that's how it ends up looking so stiff. It's more realistic, but I enjoy the little exaggerated accents when, say, a character's head is moving, which comes from having each frame be hand-drawn.
