Forget about food waste. People would be flabbergasted if they knew how many thousands of gallons of clean water a restaurant goes through every day

Average of 5800 each day

I know. I work in a restaurant. The water waste hurts me.

At the place I work, every customer gets a water whether they want it or not.
I'd say 85% (guesstimate. Not a real figure) of them come back untouched and it goes right down the drain.

That's just one aspect. People leave faucets running (I try to go around and shut em off), or will put a 1/4 full rack through the wash.

Does it really matter, though? I mean, it's not like the water is gone forever. It just goes through the sewer system, into a treatment plant, and then gets pumped back out to be used again. The water continues to circulate forever, so why should we make a big deal if some of it doesn't happen to get used every single cycle?

And then it just disappears into the ether! It's like come on guys, don't you know that water that goes down the drain is never seen again?

Water treatment is very energy intensive, isn't cheap, and there is a constant net loss in the amount of water

It does matter. There is a big difference between usage and waste, and the industry is rife with the latter.

Not all of the water can be treated. However much water goes into the treatment plant, less will come out. Over time sources of fresh water replenish themselves naturally, but overuse and waste contribute to the widespread droughts that are affecting regions all around the world at the moment.

Speaking of food, I know that the Publix I worked at threw away enough food each night to probably feed a thousand people. Breads, pies, cakes, meats, fruits and vegetables. Just tossed it all in the compactor each night.

It already has been, back in the 90's it was rare to see gasoline hit $1 a gallon, and food prices have been going up for years
