They could be mods to fix gameplay issues, mods to add or adjust game content, or other things in between!

For me, I add a few Civilization V and VI mods for gameplay. I like the realistic Earth maps, unit and UI redesigns, and custom made civs.
It's The Sims games where my mods really add up...since I first started playing The Sims 2 in 2006 I've kept a running folder of custom content. I'm at 4.53 GB of package files that I'm finally organizing since I've noticed some content that doesn't show up accurately in-game. And then I'm going to go look for new content to download >_>

I know the Elder Scrolls games are dang popular for mods, but I've never played them. I'm curious to hear how large mod folders tend to get for those.

I used to play Medieval 2 Total War with the Stainless Steel mod, which had a bunch of different updates completely overhauling the game. Did something similar with Star Wars: Empire at War, with the Republic at War mod that changed all the units and stuff (I think that was the name?). I generally can't be assed to look for individual mods that fix specific issues, too much risk of things contradicting one another.

Never played a Bethesda game on PC though.

I had to do this for Deadly Premonition to play on PC and ran into this exact issue. Eventually I got it to work, but I couldn't use the suggested fixes at the same time.

Well for me when it comes to Bethesda games I usually have between 150 and 250 mods at any given time. For total war games between 20 and 50 mods. For other games it depends but I'd ballpark it around 10 to 20.
As for actual folder size I couldn't tell you. I tend to just slap things on and see what happens.

While I don't PC game much, I think even the PC games I've played I've never bothered modding. I would be tempted to mod ES games though.

Mount & Blade Warband. Various standalone mods.

Fallout 2. Overhaul mod.

I don't bother with mods much because most of them are stupid and usually unbalanced.
