The irony is PepsiCo has gotten more free publicity from this ad and it's backlash than they ever would have gotten paying networks to run the ad in the first place.

And overall, when it comes to Pepsi and Coke, why do they even run ads? Is there anyone in the world that isn't living in a grass hut that is unaware of these products to begin with? Has any lifelong Coke drinker ever once seen a Pepsi ad and switched?

That's not really ironic. That was fully their intention. They know how controversial Kendall is and how that ad would be. And that it would be prime meme material.

Memes are the best form of publicity.

When you have well established brands like Coke, advertising stops being about product awareness and becomes more about maintaining 'Mere Exposure Effect', and preventing other brands from doing the same by (for example) spending money to take that ad slot over a competitor and jacking up the price of ad space in general.

When you see an ad for Coke, it's not a brand awareness campaign, it's a brand unawareness campaign.

tbh, Pepsi and Coke have both been running absurdly stupid pandering commercials for years. There's nothing unique about this commercial (and we've had countless soda bringing people together commercials), but people randomly seized upon it for memes because the militant fascist groups -- which aren't known for having a sense of humor -- were outraged by it.

While I found the reason for the outrage stupid, some of the memes are humorous and I like the fact that people are pushing back against stupid ads.

To be fair, it is a pretty disgusting ad, using political unrest to sell a product. I feel like it goes beyond pandering.

But that's just my opinion. I'm still not entirely sure what the main reason was for the majority of the outrage.

it isn't, but this isn't the first time erik is wrong, nor will it be the last.

the only people who don't know what coke or pepsi is are those weird tribes of people who still haven't had contact with the rest of the world

and they aren't going to be looking to drink soda any time soon.

I don't drink much soda anymore but when I did I never cared which cola was available. If anything, I would switch back and forth for varieties sake.

The more silly the unrest, the more seriously its participants try to take it. It's overcompensating and all that.

Well, that and they're trying to instill favorable responses at an unconscious level in peoples' heads so they'll be more likely to buy the product. It's not strictly just a matter of telling people you exist. And, given the ubiquity of soft drinks, it's important to maintain your name.

Of course, Pepsi will always be seen as the runner-up because Coke is more widely carried in restaurants and fast food places.

this...is possibly one of the stupidest posts i've seen you make. babies don't just spawn out of thin air in the desert and crawl towards civilization as they grow. the vastly overwhelming majority of them are born into households with refrigeration that either have coke or pepsi in those refrigerators. you must have had some strange upbringing where the existence of coke or pepsi was totally kept from you until you saw a commercial for them.
