We're now stuck with a Batman that has to use old Batman and damaged Jared Leto. Suicide Squad had to make some dumb reference to Superman as some sort of dumb justification for the plot. If someone wants to make a new Batman or Superman movie they'll need to work within what has already come before it.

We have a Marvel TV series that are stuck with the scraps of the movie universe and yet will never be referenced by the movies anyway. I like that the DC TV show doesn't have to worry about making sense with the movie universe. But even if we restrict it to movies eventually Marvel is gonna keep running through all of their heroes and then what? They can't rely on Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans forever so will that mean no more Iron Man and Captain America movies. Will people be mad if the MCU got rebooted? Probably.

It was exciting but I kinda feel like this bandwagon has run its course. Marvel has done a good job with it but even they've had blunders like Avengers 2 that are more focused on setting up the sequels instead of being a good solo movie.

We know have companies like Sony that are desperate to set up some universe of their own even if it doesn't suit one like Ghostbusters or The Mummy.

What Marvel does is overall good but I think people put way too much importance on it. At a certain point maybe we should just let a movie be a movie y'know?

Yeah it limits then when they're bad or mistakes are made. When it's done well and it all ties together nicely with character development throughout then it's cool.

i'll take it over how they were done previously since almost all superhero movies played it safe compared to their comic book counterparts and if things didn't work out --> reboot only to continue the same cycle.

even when talking about MCU, they practically wiped out everything regarding the original hulk and the only thing that remains from that entry is ross.

at this point they can get away with a lot including naming successors to cap and iron man even if the latter doesn't inherit RDJ's RDJ-ness though we probably won't see standalone films for a good while unless they really take off.

RD Jr is already leaving. he is in Spiderman Homecoming, and Avengers 3 and 4, and then he's done. but they could replace him like James Bond. I want the universe to continue not get rebooted. it should go on forever like the comics do.

A part of this thinking came from how good Logan was. That movie didn't give a damn about continuity or setting up sequels so it worked so damn well.

My favorite stories in comics tend to be the stories that are pretty standalone as well.

It's kind of irreparably damaged the MCU. By the end of things, it'll have ultimately amounted to a well-produced and expensive decade-long Monster-of-the-Week saga with no real consistent theme or overarching plot.

Still fun, but it could've been a lot more in terms of its storytelling if they were willing to take real risks.
