http://fox4kc.com/2017/04/13/parents-plan-afternoon-protest-outside-sedalia-h-s-over-bullying-blamed-for-recent-suicide/

Parents and students in Sedalia, Mo., gathered Thursday afternoon for what became a loud and at times angry protest at Smith Cotton High School. They say they want to spotlight the recent suicides of three students. They believe the school district is complicit in not doing more to stop bullying. “It does no good for parents to complain because nothing is ever done,” said one parent who emailed FOX 4. Students and parents took turns expressing their despair, frustration and anger over what some called the bullying toxicity at Smith-Cotton High School. Some parents and students put the blame on Principal Wade Norton and began chanting, ‘Get rid of Norton! Get rid of Norton!’ The school district announced in a Facebook post on Monday that Smith-Cotton High School Principal Wade Norton met with individual classes to talk about bullying and the recent suicide of Riley Garrigus, 16, on April 8. Ralph Garrigus, Riley’s dad, is expected to be at the walkout/protest, set for 1 p.m. Thursday, April 13. Garrigus told ABC 17 News in Jefferson City that Riley’s death was the fifth suicide to occur within the district in just two years.

“Another life lost would be one too many,” said Steve Tripplet, Sedalia School District assistant superintendent. “We just really want to send that message to our young people at our schools.” Tripplet said they have anti-bullying programs in place, similar to what you’d find at other schools. However, the district said that new anti-bullying policies will be in place by 2018. “We come to work everyday to give 100 percent, and we may not always get it right but we are trying to do the right thing day in and day out,” he said.

That is so sad.

They should just fight back. Punch the bully in the face or crack a chair across their back and they wont mess with you again. You might get suspended but it is worth it.

Most schools are zero tolerance. If someone is attacking you you get in trouble for just defending yourself. And most of the time punishment is being expelled and you have to go to the school where they send all the delinquent and criminal kids

What can the school do? If they punish the kid without enough evidence, they will get in to just as much trouble and even with evidence they can still get into trouble.

They aren't actually escaping anything, just getting a lick in before it all gets much worse.

Well the schools going to be low on chairs.

Not an expert but it could be that 1) more suicides are linked to bullying than before, and 2) kids feel more isolated than before thanks to (anti)social media

I honestly don't think kids are more vicious than they used to be. Fuck I went to boarding school, the shit that went on there daily between students and the teachers called "building character" would be expellable in today's world.

This used to be okay. Kids would resolve their differences by trading a few punches. They might get sent home for the rest of the day, but after that the matter was resolved. Then liberals started enacting zero tolerance and anti-violence bullshit that made situations like this 100x worse because kids are now more afraid of the what the school and police will do if they defend themselves than they are of the actual bullies.

Think it has more to do with social media and the hive mind it creates...A bully picks on you at school, you go home, its mostly over....with cyber bullying and others jumping in because "LOL TWITTER TROLLING" kids can't really escape it..."then delete your twitter!"....that's not fair to them, though...just because some jackass wants to be a "le epic troll!" the one being bullied shouldn't be able to enjoy certain things?

I think part of it may be that the advent of cyber-bullying has allowed situations similar to what has been happening in Japan for decades. Time and time again, the most damaging bullying has never come from the frequency of the bullying or the severity of the pranks themselves (I mean, unless said pranks are especially bad, of course), but from the number of peers involved. In Japan, bullying is typically the entire class getting roped into targeting one person, leaving that person feeling like he can't even go to a friend in order to receive support. That's where the threat of suicide begins. Social media allows students now, more than ever, to become involved in that same type of bullying where a large group of peers targets the one student.
