Tomorrow is Kim Il Sung's birthday, and they were planning to do a nuclear test to celebrate. Trump has flat out said he will bomb them if they go through with it* (pending sign-off from S. Korea). Its not really a big deal for the US, and N. Korea would certainly lose, but they can and would do some serious damage to S. Korea. They could easily lob a nuke at Seoul before being wiped off the map.

Kim Jong Il was predictable because he wouldnt do anything that would ensure his demise (he had a pretty sweet gig), but Kim Jong Un is still relatively untested. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

It has the potential of becoming the world's biggest game of chicken. At any rate, it'd be interesting if this was the tipping point for Kim's men where they might choose to depose their leader rather than risk destruction... although I assume that Kim will get a call from somebody in China telling him to back down.

Um... yes. Yes it is.

War on the Korean peninsula would be catastrophic for all the major players (including both China and the US) and would produce a humanitarian crisis that would dwarf the one in Syria.

I dunno, I think another major conflict won't happen until there's a definite reason for it. By major conflict I mean not just blowing up caves in the desert or easily toppling third world dictators. If the fresh water was running out, then you know shit is getting real very fast. I think North Korea is all talk, and even if they had a nuclear warhead on an ICBM, they would not use it offensively.

Let's say they launch one at Seattle, America would shoot it down or something then basically have a retaliatory blank check. Nobody could say anything if they just bombed them into submission.

This. They arent a threat to the USA, but S. Korea has reason to be worried. N. Korea has been kept in check all this time because they know they will get destroyed if a conflict breaks out. That is the main reason the world hasnt done much about them. Kim Jong Il knew that if he kept to himself, he could keep his posh dictatorship going. Ultimately, I doubt Kin Jong Un is stupid enough to provoke the US to these kinds of extremes.

Then you have countries like Iran that are just religious fanatics who dont care if they get obliterated. They are much more of a threat.

Um, yes, several people would say a few things - China, Japan, and South Korea chief among them.

Seoul - with its 25 million people - is well within artillery range of North Korea. Japan is close enough to be at risk of missile or air attacks. Even if North Korea was ultimately doomed to lose, they could slaughter millions before they were stopped. Keep in mind that North Korea has the largest military in the world by personnel - this isn't sweeping in and crushing Saddam Hussein's ~500k military forces, this is a 7.5 million strong army.

And any conflict is likely to draw China into the mix, because a) They do not want US forces right on their doorstep and b) Any collapse in North Korean leadership is going to send millions of refugees across the land border into China. Even were that not the case, the collapse of the North Korean state would require an enormous investment of resources to repair. The humanitarian crisis would be unparalleled in the modern era.

No war is as simple as "Waltz in, drop a bunch of bombs, victory!". I thought we would have learned that by now.

I'm honestly concerned for Japan and South Korea. War with North Korea would be over in an instant, we would wipe them off the map if they attempted anything...but they could do so much damage to South Korea, Japan, or both, before they go down...those countries don't deserve to be caught up in any of this. I truly hope they're prepared for any possible missile strikes and are ready to shoot anything down...Well I think Japan has those capabilities, does South Korea?

It's not that (there is a history of North soldiers defecting) its more the penalty. If a North Korean soldier defects, his entire family (parents, spouse, children, including the two following generations born and sentenced to live their entire lives in the camps) are targeted and punished by the government for the soldier's action.

Oh, I'm certain it's a matter of time before it happens, but it's not going to be in NK because of a nuke test.

Look at current developments:
He realized he can't unilaterally do anything (Obamacare) and he looks bad when he fails.
He just came off a meeting Xi where he literally got lectured on the region.
North Korea isn't a campaign promise.

Trump isn't going to order a strike for any reason except to increase his popularity. What benefit would there be for him to engage there? His base doesn't give 2 shits about NK, and realistically most Americans aren't afraid of a NK nuke strike on US soil.

The only way I see him going there is if Kim does something that kills US soldiers stationed in SK/Japan. When that happens Korean War Part 2 will start.
