... Melee is very good too, but from a pure design perspective, Smash Bros for N64 is a masterpiece. Whereas 4 didn't really do much of anything right but give the fans what they asked for. Which... turned out to be kind of crappy.

4 and Melee are fantastic and I play them to this day.

Brawl and its SSE were OK. I'm nostalgic about the pre-Brawl hype.

64 isn't a bad game by any means, it's just outclassed by the others.

Never played 1 or 4 enough to rank them.

People get too bent out of shape over dumb stuff like whether gravity affects you when you're air dodging. But the fact is, Brawl has King Dedede and Melee does not.

The best player still wins most often, with or without your precious wavedash you spent thirty years training your muscle memory on.

I will say this though.

4 is the best Smash game by default, simply because it basically combines all the others into one single game, so how could it NOT be the best?

On the flipside, it brought absolutely nothing new to the table.

I'd put 4 above Brawl, but wow, someone else here actually appreciates 64 for what it is. Do you play competitively?

I never play any games competitively, but I still play the game and it holds up so well for a game that was basically made in the basement of Hal. The thing I love about it is everything is so perfectly honed. Nothing in the game feels tacked on or padded out, and the engine is very slick. And though there are not that many characters, all of them actually kind of compete rather well. There's no massive gulfs that would come to determine later games.

I don't like either 4 or Brawl, but I put Brawl higher because at least it TRIED to do something new. Subspace Emissary turned out to be hot Japanese crap, but it wasn't a bad idea to have this massive single player mode as the core feature of the game. And trying to minimize the competitive aspects, while totally failing, was maybe something that needed to be tried.

The worst thing about 4 is it largely maintains the design ideas that were most of what made Brawl such a shit show. It removed tripping, but really tripping was just the most easily identifiable failed gameplay mechanic, and other things about it were far worse. 4 is worse because it gives you the realization that nothing was learned at all from the mistakes of Brawl.

Melee > 64 > 4 > Brawl

I feel like I'm more bitter than I used to be towards Melee because of its shitty competitive scene.

I loved 64, but Melee was (and still is) one of my favorite games of all time. I had played hundreds, if not thousands of hours throughout my childhood with my siblings and friends... And that was *before* I discovered the competitive scene in 2015. And after becoming a part of that scene (albeit only as a spectator) and really paying attention to the competitive aspects of Melee I'm really convinced there will never be a game quite like it. And now that online Melee matchmaking with Dolphin is a well-established thing, I might try to pick it up.

not entirely true. It had much better online than Brawl, and it also brought Omega Mode, and custom movesets.
