Basically trying to turn it into bundles like cable. If you want access to one thing you have to pay for that package.

If that were to happen the internet would immediate turn to shit.

There would be no individual contributions to internet design and functionality. it would be corporations controlling all of the innovation? is that fair to say?

Honestly the worst thing about that image isnt the bundles, it is the data caps. That said I dont think they could make it that bad without another 10-15 years of creeping.

Hell even offering a streaming or gaming bundle will cause a lot of backlash for the companies. More likely they will start with quietly slowing speeds down on high bandwith sites for a year or two before offering a premium streaming and gaming service and then after another year or two split them. And then just start gutting the speeds to those things after a market has been established.

I would hope that by the time they get around to this net nutrality would be back in place.

I remember being 15-16 years old and thinking that I couldn't wait until I was an adult and internet speeds would be so fast that latency wouldn't be a thing.

It has been 16 years since then and not only is internet the same in most places, but in danger of getting worse.

On the bright side, it means sites that people only view because it's free are instantly dead... would clear out a lot of garbage, such as all user created content ever

It is not that different than what they do with phones. Biggest difference is it is speeds and access to sites instead of data caps.

just have to get people used to the idea first.

And how about in 2013 when comcast cut netflix traffic?

It won't last if the companies don't handle it just right. You can be a racist misogynist or shoot a bunch of kids, but when you fuck with the stuff most people rely on for personal enjoyment, you're done.

That's a good point if some companies start doing this nonsense people will flock to their competitors. I think some folks are still in areas where they have limited options though or only one provider

That's exactly it, it's all or nothing. It's like a digital only game console being viable... if MS and Sony both do it, it'll work against the grain. If only one does, it would be a repeat of the Xbox One launch announcement.

Internet for $30 doesn't sound so bad. I don't use 90% of that shit anyway.

The stuff I do use in the picture would in no way be noticeably impacted by 128k throttling. Might even improve sites as they are forced to create more efficient code instead of everyone competing for the most bloated pile of ass on the web.

This image is totally hypothetical but it says you are capped out at 500mb and have to pay $5 for every 500 after that

Would be the end of video streaming and online gaming for some people

Getting their internet cheaper than it's ever been would be the end of online gaming for some people? Seems like odd logic.

Also, the image says nothing about $5 for 500MB. It's $5 for 2GB. That's even if you think you need more bandwidth than the throttle allows. 128k with a low latency is enough for playing most games. If you download tons of games and can't figure out how to store them for later then get the gaming package, and I guess most people probably stream videos so tack on the Hollywood package for another $10. That's $45, $50 after September. I don't know what everybody else is paying for internet but that's cheaper than my bill.

I realize this picture is supposed to be doom and gloom, but whoever made the picture doesn't understand networking at all because it shows the exact opposite. You really don't need a gigabit connection to download a bunch of text on Wikipedia.

Free internet (as long as you pay your local isp) will be a huge issue. 100 percent of people would be against it. Not going to happen.

Logistically speaking, there is no way they would be able to do that. The Internet is not like cable, they can't limit where you go, only monitor it. In order to do that they would need to own the router that you use. And while a lot of people just get a router from the internet provider, most usually use their own.

The real threat that is them selling your browsing data, but even that would only matter if you are running a drug ring out of your house or funding ISIS or something like that.

no, there is, actually.

there's a very large demographic that could make any plan like this succeed or fail, and that's the consumer.

Yeah, but eventually they're going to get something through if they try every other year. Might take 20 years, might take 40. As long as half this country still swallows snake oil, they've got a small chance.
