Do you think Jacob should have been allowed to attend wearing that uniform?

18 y/o Indiana Marine, Jacob Dalton Stanley has been BANNED from attending his graduation and accepting his diploma with his friends because he showed up to the ceremony wearing his Marine Corps UNIFORM!!

He attended Crown Point High School on Tuesday night and unlike everyone else, he arrived in full blue dress Marine Uniform..

He graduated last December and joined the Marines and completed boot camp recently and then went home to take part in his graduation where he also attended rehearsals where he wore the traditional grad outfit too

During prep, he was told by the Principal, Chip Pettit he wouldn't be allowed to wear his uniform..but he IGNORED that warning and showed up anyway with his uniform and was promptly dismissed!!..His name was also not read during the handing out of diplomas

Chip said he was enforcing a long standing policy in enforcing a uniform dress code and are required to only wear the standard cap and gown except those with distinctions such as academic achievements or enlistment in military service wear stoles or chords over their gowns..Every student, except Jacob did just that in continuing the tradition. He said it is not intended to be disrespectful to students, parents or the military servicemen and women

But classmates were not so happy he got the boot as Leann Tustison said it was "absolutely ridiculous. He's in the military putting his life on the line for us. It's unacceptable that he was not allowed to walk across the stage. If he wants to walk across the stage in his uniform that he worked so hard and earned, he should have the right to do that. That's his achievement".

The Marine Corps do not dictate what high schoolers can or can't wear as they don't get involved in these matters

Do you think Jacob should have been allowed to dress like this for graduation? let's see what people think

He was warned, but broke the rule anyways. Guilty, punishment delivered fairly.

he was literally told what the rule was, and what the punishment for breaking said rule was, and broke it anyways.

if he did this in the marines, wore something other than his dress blues to an event where dress blues were required, he'd absolutely be reprimanded. there's no double standard here.

fair, next.

Then it's no longer a rule. Where do you draw the line-if he'd completed firefighter or police training it's a no but boot camp it's a yes? He was told what the rules were and made his choice.

He knew the dress code and chose to ignore it. I pity him if walking for his diploma was something he was looking forward to, but everybody makes bad calls and nobody made that decision for him. That's life. I also pity the principal, I'm sure he takes no satisfaction in doing what he was forced to do.

I could see an exception being requested and granted, say, if he were shipping out immediately after and would have no time to change, but the story makes no mention of any circumstances like that.

One of my friend's friends insisted on wearing his marine uniform to his wedding.
The bride was not very happy but he did it anyway and looks like a douchebag in all the pictures.

I think that's pretty common. I've been to a wedding where the groom was in a dress uniform as well. It does look pretty bizarre, though, especially if the bride is totally against it.

For real, he's gonna be in for a rough awakening.

Kinda makes him look like he's only joining the Armed Forces for the recognition too.

No, rules can just have exceptions. That doesn't invalidate the rule itself. Letting a person show up in uniform doesn't automatically allow people to show up in superhero costume.

Absolutely fair, and I'd almost be willing to bet money that his commanding officer (if he has one at that point) would side with the school over him any day of the week. It's a clear rule, he was warned and told what would happen if he broke the rule, and he did it anyway. Just because he's in the military doesn't mean he's entitled to special attention or exceptions. It can be nice for him when it happens, but he's ultimately not above the rules.

They should have allowed him when he asked. But wearing the uniform despite orders is ridiculous for a marine. I feel both are in the wrong but the school made the rule. I voted yes because he should be able to wear it, but i understand they told him no.

i guess I should maintain the position I always have, which is when it comes to uniform policies I should side with the rule but I cant help feeling like its a bit respectful to military to ban their uniform
