The price is primarily driven by speculation right now. Wait for it to crash to $50, then buy in.

Do people even really use ETH for transactions? Probably not much outside of some darknet drug markets. It's probably virtually all speculation (and has been for a while)

But the infrastructure behind the Ethereum platform is growing rapidly. ICOs, new dApps, growing interest, more speculators, more developers, and lots of press attention. The main crypto currency exchanges are so inundated with new applicants that they are backlogged trying to approve everyone.

Signs are extremely bullish for Ethereum. Shit we're already at 377 now past the 375 sell wall on GDAX and climbing, Do you guys commenting even know what you're talking about?

So has there ever been even one trustworthy poster on this board that people actually recognize that can vouch for this bullshit? A bunch of randoms that don't post pictures is like super convincing and stuff.

I don't know much, which is why I asked a question. I do think that much of the recent price action (since early 2017) in cryptos in general is the result of speculative hype, but I admit that I am not informed on the details of what has been going on with the infrastructure type stuff you just mentioned.

The speculative hype is only one part of the equation. There are a bunch of things going on that are contributing to the price action. Much of it based on very real adoption and support. All these new ICOs, all the new money entering the market, all this recent press attention, are all very real signs that the Ethereum market is about to explode. Also the growing EEA (Enterprise Ethereum Alliance) with major companies doing research and lending support and giving attention to it. With big releases like Metropolis coming up and platforms like Shapeshift being made available, I fail to see how anyone would think that this isn't just the beginning.

If you don't know what's going you shouldn't be speaking on it IMO.

Can you shed some light on the advantages that ETH has over BTC? I've heard that BTC transaction times have been going up, and that there's no way to really do anything about it because of the way the underlying technology is designed. If this is true, and ETH has a huge technology advance because of it, then I think that is a huge deal.

Bitcoin's issues with transaction times can and are being addressed by the upcoming Segwit decision. Segwit stands for segregated witness it's a change to the Bitcoin blockchain code to allow for better transaction speed and block size. That being said Ethereum does have many technological advantages to Bitcoin but Bitcoin has first mover's advantage as well as name recognition and much wider adoption.

Also ETH and BTC are not necessarily directly competing. Bitcoin's blockchain and Ethereum's blockchain have different purposes and capabilities. I'm not even going to begin to go into them on a gamefaqs post you gotta do your own research.

Ethereum was not built to be a currency or store of value it was built to be used as the fuel for development and consumption of applications and contracts on the public Ethereum blockchain. You probably have no idea what that sentence even means if you don't understand Ethereum. Google is your friend there's just too much info for me to get into because there's so much to say.

@Clad

What do you think about Siacoin? There seems to be a lot of buzz around it but I really don't like the idea behind. If I were going to use cloud storage, I think I would much rather pay more to company like Google or Amazon.

I'm super excited about Siacoin. Amazon recently got rid of their unlimited storage plan. People who had it were told to move their data by a certain date or lose it. That's what happens with centralized storage run by powerful companies.

Technology like Sia is super exciting because it gives you access to cheap decentralized storage. A lot of it. It'a designed to get cheaper as more people use it, too.
