So Shao Kahn is ruler of Outworld. And he's like a multi-dimensional version of Hitler crossed with Skeletor.

So Shao Kahn is gonna fuck Earth up, till the Elder Gods tell Kahn to chill with that shit.

They set up a B-Movie martial arts tournament and tell Kahn, "youre not allowed to invade Earth unless you beat them in MORTAL KOMBAT ten times."

And then Goro wrecks shit 9 times, and then Mortal Kombat 1 happens. Liu Kang fucks up Goro and Shang Tsung and Earth is saved.


Until Mortal Kombat 2, where Shao Kahn challenges Earth to an outworld-based tournament for all the canolis. Liu Kang fucks up Tiger Goro and Shao Kahn and bones Kitana.

Then in Mortal Kombat 3 Shao Kahn says forget the Elder Gods, ima invade Earth.

I forget the original lore but in MK9 Raiden gets imbued with Elder God magic and clubs Kahn like a baby seal because Kahn broke the rules of Mortal Kombat.

Other than that, just know that

Sub-Zero was killed by Scorpion in MK1 and replaced with his younger brother. Elder Sub became Noon Saibot. Scorpion reconciled with Young Sub.

Quan Chi is responsible for Scorpions shitty life, and had control over him while Scorpion was a specter.

Smoke was a friend of Young Sub but was turned into a robot because Ninjas are just like American corporations when it comes to job automation.

Nailed it.

After that there's the events of MK4...... things happen.

Then Deadly Alliance, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung figure "hey we can get shit done together " and they kill Liu Kang. They get beat up by the good guys

Then there's a Kaos realm and an order realm added to all this. There's a guy named Taven who is lame but he's the guy you get to play as. He kills Onaga.

Then Shijinko, he was around for all the past shit mentioned and over a lifetime set up events that lead to Blaze and Armageddon, Shao Kahn wins but.......

Then MK9 and fuck everything else mentioned because the games I mentioned all sucked and the story was trash after 3 so they did a soft reboot via Raiden sending a message back in time.

Simply put, play MK9 and you're good.

But then Liu Kang saves the day once again and there is relative peace throughout the realms until MK4 happens. A fallen elder God now wants to wreck shit and he is supposed to be strong af. Liu Kang once again saves the day. He's pretty much the strongest person in the whole franchise, but...

MK5 happens. Kang is ambushed and double teamed by a deadly alliance. They actually kill Liu Kang. From here on, shit really hits the fan.

MK6 shows the true king of Outworld return and it's a fucking Dragon. With no Liu Kang around, he pretty much dominates everyone.

By the time MK7 comes around, it's an all out battle royale. Every single kharacter returns and is trying to reach the top of this pyramid that will bestow ultimate power to the winner.

MK8 is the DC crossover.

MK9 reveals that Shao Khan is the one to reach the top of the pyramid. Everyone except for Raiden is dead. Raiden uses his godly power to send visions to the past (circa MK1) warning himself of the horrible future to come.

MKX the future has changed as Shao Khan has been punished by the Elder God's. But guess what? The fallen elder God from MK4 still returns to start shit up like in the previous timeline. This time, it's the Cage Family who takes him down since Liu Kang is also dead.

MK11 will likely feature the return of the Dragon King. Oh, and Liu Kang's soul has been revealed to be a vengeful entity who took over the netherrealm.
