It was a very good idea for a film. But in practice, and I suppose watching it for the first time in the present day, in a way it felt a bit melodramatic. ~~"Ahh! My life is a lie! Everyone is in on it! I have to escape!"~~ The whole thing just seemed a little to convenient. And the ending felt pretty abrupt. I don't really know what else I would have wanted, and it's a fair argument that it was the best way to go about it. It just felt a little anti-climatic to me. In fact, go a step further and make it like the village in a way.
