I agree. I actually had a class in high school where a teacher spent several classes detailing the depth of the film. It's a very good recreation of Plato's cave allegory, which I hadn't realized. It's filled with little hints at this.

Okay, I watched this for the first time a few months ago and went into it knowing nothing about it. Which I stand by as the correct way of doing it.

It was a very good idea for a film. But in practice, and I suppose watching it for the first time in the present day, in a way it felt a bit melodramatic. "Ahh! My life is a lie! Everyone is in on it! I have to escape!" The whole thing just seemed a little to convenient. And the ending felt pretty abrupt. I don't really know what else I would have wanted, and it's a fair argument that it was the best way to go about it. It just felt a little anti-climatic to me.

I still respect it as an important film, though. I suppose at the time it was unique.

I like it and it's the only Jim Carrey movie I can sit through. I still have a Free Truman promo pin that theater workers wore.

His entire life is literally a lie. His parents, his wife and his best friend have been lying to him every minute of his existence. How else did you expect him to act?

I do agree that walking into a movie knowing nothing is the best way to watch a film, though

I wish there were more existential exploration. He didn't really react quite as distraught as he should have. Like, as long as he can escape, then everything is fine? Then what happens? He knows nothing of the outside world or what his purpose in life is. He has no legitimate friends or family. There's a lot more implied with the situation than what's presented and explored. Actually, if done well, a sequel would have been great. What happens with him after the show?

Everyone in the world knows who you are and has seen your entire life unfold, but you don't even know yourself... That alone is an incredibly interesting thought.

Again, it is a modern retelling of Plato's cave allegory. The entire point is that he knows very little of the real world and leaves the cave for an unknown future.

They did a reality show with the same concept. Average Joe or something like that? Guy thought he was on a reality game show but it was all actors.

Not at all the same thing.

I'm talking like taking a babby and watching that grow up on a fake set with a 24 hour cycle. And while he's sleeping show clips of what happened throughout the day.

In fact, go a step further and make it like the village in a way. Have him taught things that are crazy like dinosaurs still exist or something and watch his development
