This is a rough draft of a tutorial to set up Livestreamer, which if you haven't heard of it is definitely something you need in your life if you *ever* watch Twitch for any reason.

Because what I'm reading on that page is a ton of effort for no discernible payoff.

I don't watch twitch. I MIGHT try and broadcast in the future though.

People tend to do this because they think watching streams installs a bunch of crap on your computer. And they would be right...if it was 2008. Nowadays the only thing you need to install is Java, which most people have on their computer anyways.

Plus I wouldn't use VLC anyways, it seems to be a giant memory hog. I don't know what they have done to it but I honestly prefer the video player that comes with Windows 10. Never had a single problem with it and it seems to play just about anything I throw at it.

Short answer:

• Watch Twitch without needing your browser
• Stream comes through in much higher quality
• No advertisements

The entire process from start to finish should take you about two minutes, tops.

How's that a benefit? People don't use Netscape or whatever, browsers are good nowadays.

Considering Twitch's compression, that may not be too good anyway.

Hehehe, ads.

But what about the chat, or PMs, or quickly going to another strean, or watch a VoD?
This isn't helpful in any way.

Chat can open up in a popout window; the script I provide does that for you.

Going to another stream is just a simple matter of opening another instance of Livestreamer - it's a lot faster than navigating Twitch's site.

The difference in stream quality is *very* noticeable, even attempting to use the "best" setting in the browser.

Watching VODs is the only real place where Livestreamer falls short.

But that's the only valuable part of twitch. Unless you actually want to ask the streamer something semi-important (unlikely for me but you might be into that), it's not worth giving up the pause/rewind buttons just so you can have a box on the right of the screen full of shitty emoticons and LUL spam.

I feel like any streamer worth watching puts their VODs up on Youtube.

But that's why I said it doesn't seem all that necessary. I almost never see ads when I watch stuff on Twitch (maybe one every few hours or so at worst), the quality isn't terrible in any significant way, and not needing your browser doesn't really seem to have a tangible benefit if you're just using a different external program anyway.

It seems like a lot of solutions to problems that aren't actually problems in the first place, and which requires a bit of jiggery-pokery to do in the first place.

it's a lot like btbs script for "emulating" a tv channel on your computer, when you can simply just play all and then press shuffle.

They're problems if you're obsessive like I am. Methinks we should trade names >.>

I also seriously cannot overstate how easy and simple this is. You would need to be an unfathomable degree of lazy to consider it a lot of work.

The existence of this program is a pretty clear indication that someone other than me is irritated by the need to chain your browser to a video feed.

ERREUR 404 - Document non trouvé

Usually when Twitch embeds ads directly into their streams I just stop watching. I remember there was a week where they did that, viewership for one of the streamers I watched went down to 1/3 the usual.

Because running it through a dedicated media player is significantly less resource-intensive and results in better quality, like I keep saying.
