I went to a memorial service yesterday for this guy who was a huge donor to my university, and also a big member of the community. It was at this huge church and over a thousand people came. Maybe even two thousand. Well anyway, I was up on stage or whatever, and the guy leading the service gets up on the mic and welcomes everyone, etc. and asks them all to join him in reciting Psalm 23, which I guess was one of the guy's favorite passages from the Bible and also appropriate for the service. He asked everyone to say it with him, so we could all be united in this trying time of grief.

And then everyone said it. I could look out into the pews and everyone was reciting, without any reference. And the people standing next to me on stage were, too. I was literally the only person on stage not reciting because I didn't know it.

So I guess I'm asking if it's common knowledge and I'm just stupid or if it's one of those south texas things I'm just not used to.

Psalm 23, KJV

1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

I imagine they all recited the King James Version? Would've been funny to me if they'd all recited different versions and it just sounded like noise.

I don't know any of the bible by memory, but iirc that's the verse with the "as I walk through the valley of evil" line, which I always thought sounded cool.

The only thing I know from the Bible by memory is Genesis 1:1-1:3, and John 15:13. But yes, Psalm 23 is the one with the valley

Well, the first three stanzas I recognize, the latter three are somewhat familiar.

I've known it by memory for a little more than 30 years - it was read at my sister's funeral (cancer took her at the age of 10 back in 1985) and it stuck with me.

Just by saying Psalm 23, no I wouldn't have been able to recite it. But after realizing it's the Lord's Prayer, yeah, I could've done it then. I think the only part of the bible I can identify by book and verse is John 3:16, and of course the start Genesis.

The Lord's prayer is

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. You shouldn't really read the Bible else than, because demons were a very personal thing, and Angles aren't something you really dealt with. There's a reason every time they show up the first thing the say is, "fear not".

My bad then, I'm tired and flustered, my point was that I could've recited it once I realized what it was. It's been a really bad few days and I guess I'm not thinking totally clearly.

I could probably get through most of it, but no not the whole thing. I probably used to, it was a common prayer when I was growing up. But that was before my pastor turned me away from church after many such sermons like
"Jesus lives in your skin"(Literally!)
"It doesn't matter if you find church boring when you go to heaven life will be 24/7 church service and god will make it so you like it"
"Evolution doesn't make sense, the earth is only 6000 years old" Actually a video he showed us rather than something he preached, but by showing the video to a sunday school class I am assuming he agrees)
"That mcdonalds coffee lady is just stupid and selfish, she shouldn't have gotten any money from mcdonalds and she should be ashamed that she sued them"

I have only been to church a handful of times in the last 10 years and every time I have gone there has been a part of the serman that just makes me want to smack my head against the pew in front of me until it is over. Instead I go out into the lobby or to the bathroom or to the crying room and check my phone.
