I think Blockbuster in 2007 before it closed down was the last time I ever been to one.

Going to video stores or record stores was an experience. Sitting at home and pressing on your phone or video game controller or laptop to watch Netflix or download music doesn't really feel like a memorable experience to me.

What are your thoughts?

I agree. It's was an experience going in and browsing at physical copies of games and movies. Some of the artwork on old school horror VHS tapes frightened my as a kid, though.

I'll pass on the "memorable" experience of going to Blockbuster and them having nothing in stock ever, wandering around the store like a pathetic idiot, then going up to the counter when I'd hear something come through the drop off slot and go "IS THAT *INSERT MOVIE*?"... "no... darn.."

I did like the sense of anticipation when you waited to see if they had your movie or game in stock or not. It's a bit different than going on Netflix and starting to type a name to see if the movie comes up.

It's worse because on Netflix if you want to watch a movie they definitely don't have it

I liked when it was cartridges, when it went to discs they were unusable. How the hell is the general public so fucking destructive?

I definitely miss it

especially renting games

I absolutely hate how Gamefly is the only choice nowadays for a decent selection of video games

There's a ton of games this gen I would have missed out on if renting wasn't a thing.

Especially when it was multidisc games.

Randomly games would be missing one of the middle discs. Like wtf do you do with JUST disc 3 of FFVIII. Even if you were up to that point in the game, you can't finish it, and you can never start over. What was the point of stealing it?

Some parts were exciting. Then sometimes, I'd hope so hard the store had a specific game and it was either rented out, or not available to rent at all. Then my choices were to leave empty-handed or find another game that usually wasn't as interesting to me.

Actually yes I do. Blockbuster many years ago, Hastings many years ago before they felt like a novelty store, a few local places whose names I've forgot.

It wasn't some amazing experience. But I grew up poor. Renting games for the sega genesis and ps1 were how I experienced gaming earlier on. 20+ years ago wandering down the isles and carefully picking out whatever game I wanted to try next. Reading the back cover a few times. Carrying around multiple boxes till I decided which one I wanted. It's a feeling I miss now a days.

I still remember renting an actual snes console for a weekend. A bizarre notion now a days with emulation available on pcs, current gen console, handhelds, phones, probably a fridge. But back then it was a cool thing for me to do.

Local shop. Basically someone with a very large personal collection of tons of formats (Betamax, VHS, DVD, etc) and even video games across all generations decided to put everything in a store and let people rent stuff out.

Not really. It's nice not having to worry about watching a movie within 3 days or getting fined.

I have some fond memories but no I don't miss it.

Like purposely renting Tony hawk 2 like 4 times in order to justify to my dad why he should buy me a used copy. "You've already spent $20 to rent it! Clearly I like it, and this used copy is only $30!"

There's one 20 mins walk from my place, I'm actually tempted to sign up mostly for the nostalgia.

And it seems to have a good international selection, much broader than Netflix.

I actually rented a Virtual Boy when I was a kid. It was actually a fun experience for a weekend before I got sick of sticking my head into that monstrosity.

Actually still have a movie and video game rental store in Red Bay, AL.

Also have a record store in Tupelo, MS. that's been open for many years selling music most people in this area never even heard of.

Is way better then going to Best Buy, Walmart etc. and seeing the same generic shit.

I have Nexflix. And it really suck: Most movies and series have already been showed multiple times on my cable tv.
