I like how some final fantasies handle this where bosses only give out ability points.

rando thought, back in RBY days in Viridian forest when I was close to leveling up I made sure to only kill a metapod and kakuna because in my dumbass young mind it would make me have more experience the next level even though I ran from like 5-6 caterpies/weedles that I could have killed easily and had more exp by then. --- This is my signature, there are many others like it, but this one is mine. After tanking or healing for so many boss fights in MMORPGs, I've gotten to the point of hardly caring unless it throws off my leveling of that character, or if that death is as permanent as I wish some characters are that I encounter in said online games. So, in offline games, resetting after boss fights is usually not a thing for me. *shrugs*
