It's pretty cheap on Humble at the moment, and I was all set to buy it based mainly on my mistaken belief that the female version of the main character was voiced by the lovely Ashley Johnson. Then I noticed that she plays someone else so now I'm back to wondering if the game's any good or not.

I'm a big Telltale fan so don't mind yet more of the same, as long as the same is decently written. And doesn't rely on knowledge of professional Youtube Minecraft players, rather than just the game itself.

It's better than I expected it to be, and has some pretty good visual gags and more elaborate direction than any TT game to that point apart from Wolf Among Us. It's pretty short, though. The main plot is resolved around episode 4, and they sell additional episodes continuing what is built from episode 5

This is important to know going in. I played them somewhat as they came out and kept watching the main plot resolve waiting for the twist that would set up episode 5 - even had figured out how I expected it to go - and it just never happened, and then they announced the additional three episodes to go with 5 starting a new story.

I never did finish 5 or anything after that, though I bought that expansion pass for the kids.

No knowledge of that needed at all. I guess there might be some references you miss - I don't actually know whether there are or not; I know nothing about that world - but it's mainly built on the game itself.

Funny, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Bought this during the last steam sale, never played Minecraft but really enjoy Telltale games. Just finished this yesterday. I really enjoyed it. The story is fairly lighthearted as you can imagine but still has a few unexpected twists and turns.

Of what I've played:

TftB > TWD S1 > TWAU > Batman > Strong Bad > Minecraft > GotG (so far) > TWD S3 > TWD S2

Edit: Also you don't need to know anything about Youtubers, one of the episodes feature some but I didn't know that at the time, they're just characters. I'm sure there's some in-jokes I missed about them but nothing vital that I could tell.
