But artists are generally forced to temper their work for commercial purposes

that's true but the end user doesn't know about this until you tell them. it's not part of the experience until you make it that way.

I don't know about that. The video posted in the OP is about the most unoriginal sad piano theme you could think of. I think you could probably find hundreds of almost identical samples of royalty free music just like it on the internet in about 5 minutes, because writing a basic minor key melody on piano with some synth in the background is one of the easiest ways to create a sad atmosphere.

That's all my point is. The creator of that theme was just trying to match a brief. He did a good job of it too. But this is my argument. His brief was to create music to listen to while watching that specific scene in the movie. It was never written to just listen to by itself. I think the creator would have written something totally different if that was the case.

Yeah, it sounds like one of the demos on electronic keyboards.

I think anime and video game music is created as supplementary, and is fundamentally incomplete to just listen to.

how do you explain the hordes of people who do just that, then?

Why do people do things?

let's not be snobs now. it's evocative enough, probably reminds listeners of the time dude threw a bike. mono stroke bloke was neat.

I think that's part of Pinky's point though. As I've never watched One Punch Man, the only thing I have to draw on is the music itself. And it's like most piano ballads.

Now apparently it's an arrangement and not the original, which is probably contributes to the MIDI keyboard feel of it (as it probably is a midi arrangement).

Basically. If I remember correctly, the situation at the time that music plays is that an underdog character stands up heroically to a super powerful villain and gives an emotional speech about not giving up or something, even though you know he doesn't stand a chance. You get some of that from the music.

But this is music that is completely derivative. And that's fine - it didn't set out to be original or even especially good - it just set out to set the tone of the scene.

I mean look if you want to listen to this it's fine but I'm not going to play best friends and say that it's comparable to Beethoven.

If it makes you feel any better that comment was a joke, although my comments about what I think about the genre are legit.

Song in the OP is a bland example. But some songs are actually pretty great on their own from games.

Let's Dance, Boys from Bayonetta or A Fleeting Dream from FF10 are video game music that while knowing the context of them obviously amplifies the song, they can ride solo just as well as an upbeat jazz and emotional evoker, respectively.

Anime has good ones too. Though I can't immediately think of any. Though Pinky is right in that most anime music is based around bringing back specific moments.

Though I guess it isn't so different to people listening to specific music when they workout or when they're sad, is it? Music being used for situational mental stimulant isn't exactly abnormal.

That is a good counterargument. There's a lot of pretty bland mood music out there that does the job.

The high horse feels good though, the view up here is great.

Tell you what. If you can show someone a piece of music from a film or anime or game they've never seen and they genuinely enjoyed listening to it without needing the context and would listen to it again, I say it passes the pinky shit-test.

Pretty much. Like what a shitty mindset to have.

Music is music. Let people like things. Anyone who gets "suspicious" over things like that need to step back and rethink how they interact with people.

I don't suppose you recognise the irony in being this judgmental towards me over this, no? Let people dislike things too.

Except you didn't just state that you dislike this type of music. Instead, you made a snide remark about people that do like this type music and then went full on damage control when called out for looking like a tool.

You even owned up to being pretentious about it. Owning up to being a snob doesn't somehow make being a snob any less undesirable to interact with.

Nice try though.

I stated I disliked it and then devolved into more of an academic discussion on why later, yes. The only thing that was a surprise was people taking my initial comment seriously and personally.

Don't worry, I don't actually think less of you for listening to j-pop for 12 year old girls.

So is this another comment that isn't supposed to be taken seriously?

Correct. The only thing I'm being serious about here is that I think anime and video game music is by and large really terrible with a few notable exceptions, and I gave my reasons why for that already. I don't actually have any serious opinion about other people based on what they listen to.

You should because it's true. The whole Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz controversy centers around that.

I'm contesting that most people know the song period.
