Republicans are waiting to pass their tax-reform bill before they move to impeach Donald Trump, a former Republican member of Congress reportedly told a former US labour secretary.

In a Facebook post, Robert Reich said the former senator, an old friend of his, told him Republicans are "just praying Trump doesn't do something really, really stupid before the tax bill."

Speaking over the phone, Mr Reich said he asked his friend whether other Republican senators were preparing to follow Senator Bob Corker and "call it quits with Trump".

"Tillerson would leave tomorrow if he wasn't so worried Trump would go nuclear, literally," he added.

"Who knows whats in his head? But I can tell you this. Hes not listening to anyone. Not a soul.

"Hes got the nuclear codes and, well, it scares the hell out of me. Its starting to scare all of them. Thats really why Bob spoke up."

When asked what would happen if Republican leadership said Mr Trump was unfit to serve, the former senator said: "Bingo! The emperor has no clothes. Its a signal to everyone they can bail. Have to bail to save their skins.

"I mean, Trump could be the end of the whole goddamn Republican party."

He said once Republicans "start bailing on him, the stage is set" for impeachment."

The Republican party is stronger now than it has been in 100 years. The Democrat party can only survive regionally now. Yet we still have delusional things like this being published. It's silly.

yeah i mean reich is more of a voice for moveon than anything else

the GOP isn't stupid enough to start impeachment proceedings

i really question whether their tax bill can pass as is though

if they get anything at all it would be a temporary bill (and probably a very temporary one as dems will repeal it the second they control govt)

Do you have specific evidence that makes an attack on his credibility substantial? Or is it just the fact that he is generally left leaning?

he's more than generally left-leaning, he is very progressive

he's also spoken about an unnamed republican member of congress before (at least two other instances I can think of) and he has changed his story about impeachment more than once

I mean it isn't impossible but it doesn't make sense politically for Republicans and it fits a narrative that is popular in his circles so I think my skepticism is p justified

That's not unreasonable. Still, it's not a stretch that he has friends on the other side of the isle, amd whatever Reich's political affiliations are, it's not like he's a tabloid hack.

Also, I would argue it's making more political sense for the GOP every day, Trump is a deeply, deeply unpopular president who continues to make incredibly questionable decisions. He's damaging the party on a fundamental level.
