Just got back from Dweezil. Show was AMAZING. Went over 3 hours - great setlist and all the musicians were super talented, a good amount of on-stage banter and segues into other songs, etc. Felt just like seeing a real FZ show. The secret word of the day was a pulled pork statue of Nolan Ryan (because what else would you talk about in Houston). If you get a chance to see this act, you HAVE to go.

Setlist:
Band played Five Five Five for Dweezil to come out to, which was cool
Andy - this was a really great and traditional cover but done really well, Dweezil threw in an extra solo at the end that may have been my favorite of the night
Lonely Little Girl - Kind of a surprise, they seemed to add a second verse and a repeat of the song basically with Dweezil doing the melody on the guitar, followed by a solo
Flakes - This was a great setup, featuring some of the most banter of the night. The Bob Dylan impression was done by a female saxophone player who eventually referred to herself as "Barbara Dylan" which Dweezil was not having. The male backup guitar player then came out as Johnny Guitar Watson, at which point the re-appeared sax player came out as his apprentice, Johnny Guitar Cartman, and finished the Dylan part of the song with a barely passable Cartman impression. A little cheesy, but it worked.
Fifty Fifty - Probably my highlight of the night. This short white girl had been on stage and had basically done nothing to that point but a few backup vocals and some tambourine. She grabs the mic for Fifty Fifty and fucking kills it. Just perfectly done. One of the hardest vocals in the FZ catalog and she absolutely knocked it out the park. Great keyboard, sax, and guitar solos as well. This was probably the best stretch of the show.
Pojama People - My girlfriend was excited for this as we listened to One Size Fits All earlier and this was her favorite. Another great solo from Dweezil but pretty close to what you expect in this song from the regular FZ version
Call Any Vegetable - This was also awesome, the fast-paced JBLA version. Lots of fun.
Tell Me You Love Me - Pretty basic and boilerplate - well done but nothing special
Rollo - All versions of Rollo mashed into one. Not really my favorite song so kind of a lowlight I guess.
At this point, Dweezil said he wanted the audience to help him conjure the spirit of Stuebaker Hoch, which I freaked for because I thought it meant we were getting the whole Billy The Mountain, but instead they played the James Bond theme for a bit, and then maybe 5 minutes worth of the "Stuebaker Hoch" section from Billy. Another good solo.
Absolutely Free - Dweezil claims this song has never been played live in the same way as it sounds on the album until now. Pretty faithful, including some "special effects" to match the album version. Not a perfect match, but pretty close.
Dog Meat - The classical version, Dweezi says that when FZ wrote hard music, there often wouldn't be much guitar in it because "he really just wanted to hear other people play it."
Dog Breath - The classic "Token of His Extreme" version
Pound for a Brown - They brought out a special guest whose name I didn't reorganize for some stunt guitar. The sax player took the main melody while the guest and Dweezil did some dueling solos and then played together, a lot like that great video of FZ and Vai on Stevie's Spanking - maybe the overall guitar highlight of the night
Cocaine Decisions - Pretty standard cover
Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch - Another fairly basic cover but with a longer and better solo than usual

Sleeping in A Jar - seamlessly with ship, pretty quick, almost missed it
Florentine Pogen - This was a super fast version that Dweezil claims was actually the original version but went unreleased. Not necessarily a fan of the increase in speed but still played well.
"Sleep Napkins" - Another unreleased one, this was basically a mash-up between Sleep Dirt and Black Napkins, interesting but not groundbreaking
Doreen - I was excited for this for the vocalist to get another chance to kill it, but they kind of changed up the mix a bit so the vocals were a little different and diminished. She did well but it wasn't amazing.
Dirty Love - Redeemed herself a bit here with probably her second strongest performance of the night (no coincidence that the female vocalist shines on ONS songs I guess). But I also feel like they changed the guitar a bit and took a note out of the main riff so it wasn't as cool.
Black Page 1 (drum solo) and 2 (full band) - Not much to say about this - drummer nailed it - massive respect
Peaches - Standard live performance of peaches. Pretty good.
Keep it Greasy - This was another lowlight, just not a favorite song of mine and they seemed almost out of sync, like the band was going fast but the vocalist was normal. Solo was pretty good though.
Cheepnis - This was a good performance from the full band. The rhythm guitar player, who in a lot of songs had a really good FZ soundalike voice, actually took the Napoleon Murphy Brock vocals, the chick took the "dont let the poodle bite me" part, while the bass player (who barely had any vocals at all) did the FZ announcer bits
I Just Can't Believe I Was Such A Fool - blanking on the actual name for this song, but it was well done, at one point they segued into Two Tickets to Paradise for some reason
More Trouble Every Day - This was the closer to the main show, a very faithful adaptation of More Trouble with another great solo, maybe the third best of the night. Also had some "Stayin Alive" bits in it.

Encore
"Remington Electric Razor" - A jingle that FZ apparently wrote for a commercial that was rejected, mildly entertaining
Oh In The Sky - One of those "FZ tries to be annoying" songs. The FZ-esque vocalist went all out high pitched and I'm surprised he didn't lose his voice on this.
Dynamo Hum - A very long version of this with more skits, involving the female vocalist getting the pulled pork statue of nolan ryan stuck in her throat, and the band trying to help her dislodge it by playing "You Spin Me Right Round" as she spun around on stage. Once it was successfully disloged, we had "audience participation" with her leading us in some "bow wow" singing during the poodle bites part of the song, and then the other guitar player resumed his role as Johnny Guitar Watson and also led us in some crazy vocals. They finished up this song going back to Dynamo in a very slower and sing-songy style that was pretty unique and interesting.
At this point they did the introductions again and said goodnight and I figured it as over
But nope, then we got MUFFIN MAN, the ultimate and perfect closer. Great stuff - I took a quick video here and will try to post it to FB if I can.

Seriously, great show. GO IF YOU CAN!

That does seem like an awesome show! If we get the same setlist as that (or even a similar one) I'll definitely be happy. Seems like it has everything I look for in a Zappa coverband show: awesome Zappa songs, awesome guitar solos, improvisational madness and a dose of humor (and of course all the band members playing and singing their parts accurately, but that's never been a problem with Dweezil).

A rehearsal version of "Sleep Dirt/Black Napkins" was actually released on Joe's Camouflage.

Currently working my way through The Roxy Performances. So far a noteworthy event is that during his outros of the second show (before the encore), Frank names "Zack (unintelligble) on guitar" (???). Not sure if he's jokingly referring to himself, Jeff Simmons (who was a special guest at some of these Roxy shows) or a guest guitarist I'm unfamiliar with.

Did some research on this and it turns out the first option is the correct one. The name is Zack Glickman - apparently he was some dude who worked at DiscReet Records. Mystery solved! (Though I'm still not sure why Frank would make a reference to him, but maybe it's nothing more than typical Frank randomness.)

Frank's comments on this track from the libretto:

The dashing Duke is on his way home from a football game when he tries to make it with some cheerleaders who beat him in the face & armpits near the parking lot which leads to amnesia.

Note that Frank also commented on this track in the International Times issue from 8/31/1967:

A dashing duke is attempting to pick up two cheerleaders in a parking lot who bash him in the face with a rock leading to amnesia... (MUMBLING FREE ASSOCIATION)

Pretty similar description, though Frank left out the armpit bashing in that one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x8jg31mO9o" data-time="

Now that my comments about the Absolutely Free libretto are done, let's do some more tracks inspired by me listening to Halloween 77.

This one is from Muffin's YouTube channel! There's six new versions of "Punky's Whips" on Halloween 77, though parts of the 10/29 early version appeared on Baby Snakes and in the Baby Snakes movie, and parts of the 10/31 version also appeared on Baby Snakes and in the Baby Snakes movie. Note that those versions have a different vamp during Frank's guitar solo than the one that appears here. This song is always awesome, though in all of the Halloween 77 versions Ray White's vocals are sorely missed in the "He's been havin' a rash" section.

There's six new versions of "Muffin Man" on Halloween 77, though part of the 10/30 version appeared in the Baby Snakes movie, and part of the 10/31 version also appeared in the Baby Snakes movie. As can be seen in the Baby Snakes movie (or even in the trippy version Muffin posted in post #103), both Adrian Belew and Frank take a guitar solo in the solo section. Cool versions, but none of them can top this classic Bongo Fury version.

Song of Three Hundred Thirty-Two Days Ago: Bobby Brown Goes Down (from Sheik Yerbouti/ZAPPAtite: Frank Zappa's Tastiest Tracks)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtzmsczw3U0" data-time="

Probably the most painful part of listening to Halloween 77 was listening to this song over and over again - there's five of them on the album. I've heard it a million times and in every version Frank gives an introduction in which he explains what the lyrics are about (like he does in the Hammersmith Odeon version), making the time I have to listen to it even longer. Plus there are no vocal overdubs like there are in this version (obviously), making these versions basically sound like half-assed demo versions to me. Oh well, as a hardcore Zappa fan you have to deal with stuff like this too!

There's five new versions of "Disco Boy" on Halloween 77. The 10/30 version already appeared on Baby Snakes and in the Baby Snakes movie. I only recently realized that most Zoot Allures CD versions of the song (like this one) are actually shortened. But don't worry, you don't have to dust off your record player, as the Universal CD version (released in 2012) contains the full version. You're not missing much anyway: the final theme is repeated several more times while the song fades out.

Song of Three Hundred Thirty Days Ago: Flakes (from Sheik Yerbouti)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwkbV8WujxI" data-time="

There's five new versions of "Flakes" on Halloween 77. Also somewhat disappointing, as the entire "I'm a moron an' this is my wife" section doesn't exist yet in these earliest versions, but still nice to hear. Frank and Adrian Belew occasionally deviate from the familiar lyrics in the Bob Dylan section. Funnily enough, in one show Frank changes the "Wanna buy some mendies, Bob?" line (it actually appears as "Wanna buy some acid, Bob?" in most versions) to "Wanna buy some Music from Big Pink albums, Bob?" Apparently this baffles Adrian, as we then get a few seconds of silence where his next lines should be. Also, the music from the Bob Dylan section is used as background music for the band introductions at the start of every show, except for the 10/30 show.

There's five new versions of "Dinah-Moe Humm" on Halloween 77. The 10/31 version already appeared on Baby Snakes and in the Baby Snakes movie. While this isn't one of my favorite Zappa songs in any version, this is probably my favorite version (out of the ones I've heard, at least). The music in the monologue section is pretty funky, and unfortunately this funkiness doesn't really appear in the later live versions.

There's one new version of "I Have Been in You" on Halloween 77, though Frank's intro to the song already appeared as "Is That Guy Kidding or What?" on YCDTOSA Vol. 6. While the song sounds more or less the same as this version, Frank's singing in the Halloween 77 version is awful, even by Frank's already-not-great standards. He sounds more like Lou Reed than anything, but while Reed intentionally sings off-key, Frank sounds like he's trying really hard to sing the song well and failing miserably. As can be heard on the YCDTOSA volume, Frank mentions that at this point IHBIY has "only been performed once before." I can only imagine what the first performance sounded like.

There's one new version of "King Kong" on Halloween 77, though parts of it appeared in the Baby Snakes movie. The Halloween 77 version starts with the main theme, played exactly as it is played in this version. Then we get an Ed Mann vibraphone solo, a "human trombone" solo by special guest Phil Kaufman (in which he vocally imitates a trombone - pretty impressive), a Peter Wolf keyboard solo, an inserted "Gas Mask" performance featuring Roy Estrada (for more comments on "Gas Mask," see posts #88 and #89), a Tommy Mars keyboard solo, a Frank toy police car solo, and finally a Terry Bozzio drum solo (which is listed as a separate track on Halloween 77). In this Hammersmith Odeon version, we get a Frank guitar solo and a Tommy Mars keyboard solo.

The Halloween 77 version pretty much sounds like the Hammersmith Odeon version, but with one annoying difference: Tommy Mars's keyboards are super loud and really distract from Frank's guitar playing. Though the 12/9, second show version partially appeared on Roxy & Elsewhere (this version), on Roxy by Proxy and in Roxy the Movie, and the 12/10, second show version partially appeared on Roxy & Elsewhere (this version), on Roxy by Proxy and in Roxy the Movie.

Something I haven't mentioned about this tune before: one of the melodies from "Be-Bop Tango" ("This is bebop...") is quoted several times. Or maybe Frank is quoting "Don't You Ever" in "Be-Bop Tango"? Both of these compositions debuted on the same tour (the second '72 tour), so it's kind of hard to say.

Song of Three Hundred Twenty-Five Days Ago: Louie Louie (At the Royal Albert Hall in London) (from Uncle Meat)

There's one new live version of "Louie Louie" on The Roxy Performances. On the album it appears as "Orgy Orgy." In the chorus, the words "Louie Louie" are replaced with "orgy orgy." Just typical Frank humor, I guess.

Song of Three Hundred Twenty-Four Days Ago: Penguin in Bondage (from Roxy & Elsewhere)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_fzDShMQXQ" data-time="

There's three new live versions of "Penguin in Bondage" on The Roxy Performances. The 12/9, first show version already appeared on Roxy by Proxy, the 12/8 version partially appeared on Roxy & Elsewhere (this version), the 12/10, first show version partially appeared in Roxy the Movie, and the 12/10, second show version partially appeared on Roxy & Elsewhere (this version) and in Roxy the Movie.

I've talked before about how this particular version is constructed, but now I'll do so again. 0:00-1:24 (Frank's intro) was taken from the first show from 12/10. On The Roxy Performances this intro appears as a separate track called "Bondage Intro." Frank edited out several parts of this intro. 1:25-2:19 was taken from an entirely different tour than the Roxy tour (the third '73 tour), namely the second '74 tour. It was taken from the 5/11/'74 show. Note that the full version of "Penguin in Bondage" from this show appears on the digital download Penguin in Bondage/The Little Known History of The Mothers of Invention (oddly enough this release isn't listed on the Frank Zappa discography page on Wikipedia, but I digress). 2:19-2:48 was taken from the second show on 12/10. For 2:48-3:09 we cut back to the 5/11/'74 show. 3:09-5:11 (Frank's guitar solo) was taken from the 12/8 show. The rest is from the 5/11/'74 show.

Song of Three Hundred Twenty-Two Days Ago: Cosmik Debris (from Apostrophe [']/ZAPPAtite: Frank Zappa's Tastiest Tracks)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtx4ZJ1cwI0" data-time="

There's one new live version of "Cosmik Debris" on The Roxy Performances. The 12/9, first show version already appeared in Roxy the Movie.

The versions on TRP sound pretty much the same as this studio version. But in the solo section, instead of a short Frank guitar solo, we get longer solos by multiple band members. We get a Napoleon Murphy Brock tenor saxophone solo, a George Duke keyboard solo, and finally a Frank guitar solo.

Song of Three Hundred Twenty-One Days Ago: The Idiot Bastard Son (from We're Only in It for the Money)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01_ZH3voeDc" data-time="

There's three new live versions of "The Idiot Bastard Son" on The Roxy Performances. The version from the first show on 12/9 also appears on the album as "That Arrogant Dick Nixon." This version has new vocals, overdubbed by Napoleon Murphy Brock. The new lyrics are about (you guessed it) president Nixon.

Song of Three Hundred Twenty Days Ago: Cheepnis (from Roxy & Elsewhere)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiAepXOSjrE" data-time="

There's one new live version of "Cheepnis" on The Roxy Performances. The 12/10, first show version already appeared on Roxy by Proxy, and the 12/10, second show version already appeared in Roxy the Movie.

This version is also taken from the second show on 12/10 (Frank's intro appears as a separate track on TRP, called "I Love Monster Movies"). However, there's one key difference. The 3:36-5:02 section (starting with "Ladies and gentleman, the monster") doesn't appear on TRP, as this section was actually inserted into the track from a studio recording (also from December '73). From 5:02 on, we cut back to the 12/10, second show version again. Note that in the TRP version, the "Ladies and gentlemen, the monster" section also exists, but after "We may have to use nuclear force" it jumps straight to "C'mon! Everybody! Hurry!" The section about the poodle dog is omitted.

Song of Three Hundred Nineteen Days Ago: RDNZL (from Studio Tan/Lther)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbVG6ecjGQg" data-time="

There's three new live versions of "RDNZL" on The Roxy Performances. The 12/9, first show version partially appeared on Roxy by Proxy and in Roxy the Movie, the 12/9, second show version partially appeared in Roxy by Proxy, and the 12/10, first show version partially appeared in Roxy the Movie.

Note that the TRP versions of "RDNZL" sound wildly different from this version (which was recorded a year later). They're still recognizable as being "RDNZL," though.
