So partly to back up my claim, partly out of genuine curiosity, and partly because I have too much time on my hands today, I decided to do a quick Google search for "top Disney songs" (no quotes) and clicked on the first 10 non-Youtube results. There were a variety of lists - some top 10s, some top 20s-25s, even a couple that ranked virtually every Disney song ever. Also it appeared that the makers varied - some seemed to be individual, some seemed to be selected by a handful of editors, and some appeared to be voted on by the site's general population. Regardless, I took the top 10 from each list and the results didn't surprise me - no song appeared in the top 10 on every single list, and the ones that appeared most frequently were the hero/heroine's big moments, the love ballads, and the upbeat comedic songs. Very little villain representation and no Be Prepared. Based on the number of top 10s they landed on:

7
Let It Go
The Circle of Life

6
Can You Feel the Love Tonight
Part of Your World
When You Wish Upon a Star

5
A Whole New World
The Bare Necessities

4
Colors of the Wind
I'll Make a Man Out of You

3
Beauty and the Beast
Friend Like Me
Reflection
Someday My Prince Will Come
You've Got a Friend in Me

2
Baby Mine
Be Our Guest
Bella Notte
Gaston
Hakuna Matata
How Far I'll Go
I Just Can't Wait to be King
I Wanna Be Like You
I Won't Say (I'm In Love)
I-2-I
You're Welcome

1
A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
Cruella De Vil
Do You Want to Build a Snowman
Feed the Birds
Go the Distance
Hellfire
He's a Tramp
Jack's Lament
Kiss the Girl
Once Upon a Dream
Poor Unfortunate Souls
You'll Be In My Heart
Zero to Hero

This is pretty much what I expected from non-Board 8, though now rereading the list I'm scratching my head and wonder where the hell Under the Sea is, but otherwise this looks like the opinions I generally hear.

The very first hit, which is a site where apparently people can vote, has Be Prepared just shy of the top 10 at number 12, so...

Villain songs being popular is not a mainstream thing, yeah. That said, it's a phenomenon that definitely extends beyond Board 8. It's a "hardcore Disney fanbase" thing, basically.

Yeah, I don't think it deserves to be in "best Disney songs" contention when it comes to like, a top ten kind of thing

But acting like it's only popular on B8 is silly

I remember someone burned the lion king cd. But it didn't fit on the CD, so they cut "Be Prepared" because it was the worst song. I was like "why didn't you cut one of the elton John versions of the songs, since there were already versions sung by the characters" or even the instrumentals.

They said Be prepared was the worst song.

Be Prepared is amazing.

Also Let it go sounds like a villain song to me.

I'll make a man out of you is still the best though.

Let it Go IS a villain song.

Np, especially since the best song in that film is an ACTUAL villain song

What song would that be? Shiny? Thats not even like top 3 for the movie imo and the character is barely even around long enough to count. If Elsa count I dunno how Maui wouldnt since both put their worlds in peril without really meaning to and werent too interested in fixing them >__>

Best villain song is I'll Make a Man Out of You because Shang was mean to Mulan during that song and it's sexist.

I know. That was sorta my point. If people wanted to count Elsa theres no reason to not include Maui. I mean Elsa didnt know how to undo what she did, but Maui DID and didnt want anything to do with it

Yeah I don't count either as a villain.

Is "Perfect World" a villain song? Kuzco is a huge jerk at that point in the movie.

"It's a hardcore Disney fanbase thing"

Is that the same thing as only hardcore fans of history enjoy dictators and serial killers?

What does being a hardcore Disney fan have to do with a subjective opinion regarding a common film that casual and hardcore fans alike have seen? Hardcore fan opinions are only relevant when it comes to judging many works across a large scale, such as film critics being able to weigh an opinion by referencing lesser known movies that a casual goer might not be aware of. An opinion about a song preference in a movie that everyone has seen is entirely subjective and has nothing to do with anything.
