Thoroughbreds was great! I really liked the long takes and lingering shots, and having the climax be shown off-screen was a perfect touch.

The Open House may be one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. I don't care about spoiling it since it's so fucking bad, but the scene where the killer mounts the kid and takes out his contacts for no reason is the most unrealistic thing. The fact that everyone in the movie is a red herring and you are supposed to speculate who the killer was based on every potential suspect having only one scene in the movie is so stupid and insulting. And then the mother-son drama never resolves because the mom dies before it.

It is the worst home invasion movie and totally worth watching only if you want to see how someone could fuck that kind of movie up so bad.

I also don't understand giving Unsane's plot any kind of praise. The previews made it seem like a psychological film, the movie makes it seem like it, but then everything just turns out to be exactly as it seems and it's just a super generic and boring movie once you realize there is nothing psychological about it. Claire Foy is great in it though.

Yes! The whole thing is so chilling; it's those two main performances that really make it all work. Excellent cinematography on top of that

The new American Horror Story has some of the worst dialogue and characterization ever and I'm only watching it to see the Murder House cast again.

They literally created a character and named him so they could do a line "The stew is Stu!" This is the most idiotic hack writing alive. How are they so bad. Holy shit.

The setting is good, but having the headmistresses expose to us in the first episode their big evil plans for making up the rules and being needlessly nefarious was ridiculous.

I have literally no faith in this season at all, but damnit if I don't want to see Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton again.

Really? Please tell me you at least saw A Quiet Place in theaters. That's one you really should've experienced on the big screen for the unique atmosphere alone. Honestly I feel like Hereditary wouldn't be as good on a home setup, but that one isn't essential to see with an audience unlike AQP. I've never seen people try to stay so silent, and no one was moronic enough to bring their little kids either of the two times I saw it in the auditorium.

Anyway I finally watched AHS: Apocalypse E1. Not the strongest start, but still decent and intriguing enough that I'll follow along with it. I mean I stuck it out through Cult and Hotel and holy crap those were awful.

That line was pretty awful, but it was cheesy enough that I laughed at it. I feel like Cult has examples of worse writing.

Yeah that was a bit of a letdown. I feel like after the big "twist" in Hotel received such a lukewarm and well duh reception the writers may not have trusted themselves to drum up a decent mystery so they're making the plot explicit from the start.

Obvies not gonna just Apocalypse off of one episode, but here's my ranking for the other 7 seasons:

Asylum
Murder House
Roanoke (without the last act I'd rank this #1)

Small gap

Coven
Freak Show

Big gap

Hotel
Cult

As a side note I love how Apocalypse's intro plays with your nostalgia by splicing in footage from the intros of Murder House, Coven, and Asylum as if to say... "Hey remember when this was good?" to the loyalists who've been watching since Season 1. Sadly it also gives me the feeling this might be the final season. Anybody else got this sneaking suspicion?

I absolutely agree Cult had some good awful writing and dialogue. The last episode in particular was probably among the worst.

Also, it got renewed up until season 10, so it's here to stay. I literally only want to watch this season to see Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton.

Well that's good at least. Char and I try to catch every horror release we can while they still have theatrical runs just because we feel often that sometimes audience reactions complete the ensemble. Even for bad movies sometimes another moviegoer will sigh loudly and make us laugh at the awful experience we're sharing and thus make it better for example.

We still need to see A Simple Favor before I get spoiled, but I'm not sure if charon is interested in that one despite the positive reception. He seemed like he was more interested in The Predator, which I think at its core has always been more of an action series with horror in it than a horror series.

lol i just finished watching that as I opened this page

The Nun is death by jumpscare, good god. They just throw in as many as possible and hope that some are effective, to the point where it no longer has any effect by the middle of the movie. The atmosphere is kinda cool - reminded me a lot of Woman in Black how it's set at a big secluded, decrepit building shrouded in mist with mysterious shadowy figures everywhere.

It's a shame because the setting and villain are genuinely unsettling, if they had bothered to slow down and build any tension or show character development, it could have been good.

So I was re-watching the 1999 The Mummy movie. It's campy, but it's still a totally fun watch. In truth, my girlfriend and I have been waiting for it to come to some kind of service for a while since we rode the ride many times at Universal earlier this year.

But man, how do you look at the success of this movie and then make the latest The Mummy movie. Like what the hell. Why didn't they make another fun action/horror movie like this and try to kickstart their dumb Monsters Universe off like that. Focus on the heroes of these Monster movies rather than the monster, so it's a big, dumb, cool thing when the heroes all have to team up? Give each hero a different vocation for each movie like a scientist, police officer, archaeologist, etc. So they all have a role in the big team up.

I dunno, I think of what could have been and it's sad after watching something done so right with the Brendan Frasier Mummy movie.

Char and I ended up seeing A Simple Favor instead of The Predator and I for one do not regret that decision one bit. I don't want to compare it to the last thriller we saw because that one was just too stellar and different, but A Simple Favor was also very unique and had some shock value included as well, albeit for a different reason. The plot was mostly unpredictable, again for different reasons, but char and I did correctly guess at how the antagonist was going to get their comeuppance. I say antagonist because there's no real villain, just a whole lotta moral gray area. Blake Lively's performance is exceptional, but Anna Kendrick was the knockout here. I've never seen her play a character like this and I totally bought her in this role. Their chemistry is fantastic and the movie is littered with a surprising amount of comedy, so fun for the whole family (don't bring the kids).

I watched The New Daughter on Netflix.

It had parts that were genuinely really good. Like, they knew how to make a horror movie. Kevin Costner is in it and does an excellent job. The scares and tenseness are there for a lot of reasons, but the plot is held together by shoe strings and it's super distracting, especially by the end. The ending is both parts good and absolute shit. I feel like it's more shit because my immediate reaction was to hate it.

I probably do not recommend.

See, I thought that No End House introduced a lot of cool stuff, only to do absolutely nothing with it (the house was never actually used much at all). I also felt that No End House fell apart later on in the series, which is kind of what happens a lot of the time with this show, but I thought Butcher's Block stuck the landing and had the best ending. I thought it had the worst ending until I thought about it.

I like the beginning and middle of Candle Cove too much to put it lower than second. But I think that it fell apart a bit at the end.
