Mario calls Bowser to invade the Mushroom Kingdom repeatedly, with payment after the whole scheme of "rescue" is done, with gold coins, which is why Mario goes out of his way to collect as many of them as possible. Bowser only pretends to try to kill Mario, but intentionally keeps himself from doing so, just so he can rescue Peach.
