Neon Genesis Evangelion
@xp1337

9uaE5CO

An all time classic... that I've never actually seen in complete! So I really have to go on the word of other people when they say that. There have been bits and pieces that I caught but it was more as background noise than anything else. I used to stay up late playing games while leaving Toonami on, but my attention was always 95% on my computer and 5% on the television... if at all. It wasn't a show that ever caught my interest enough to make me feel compelled to watch it.

In recent years I've thought about trying to either watch the new movies or watch the original series but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Basically a show that is on my radar but it's not one that I can say much about. Which is a shame. I think good or bad this is the type of series I would probably have a lot to say about if I had seen it.

WataMote
@Mobilezoid

A very good show! This is something I had heard a lot about long before I ever got around to watching it. One of those famous types of series where its reputation often precedes it. I can't remember what my expectations were going in, but I do remember enjoying it quite a bit.

There were some parts where I remember not liking the art design very much, but I wouldn't say that is any more than a minor nitpick and it was on a scene basis. Not anything that would have impacted entire episodes or even multiple concurrent scenes. Since it has been a while I would probably struggle to think of concrete examples.

The humor of this show is really enjoyable to me. I loved the awkwardness of the main character and how things would turn poorly. Usually in cases where she deserved it or set herself up for failure, but not always. Sometimes life was just cruel for no reason. I usually refer to this as Looney Tunes style humor and I don't mean that in a bad way when I say it. It's a classic formula for flawed characters to come up with some contrived plan and then the audience gets to laugh as we watch it blow up in their face.

I remember the series having a few briefly sweet moments, but those were relatively sparse. It's not the kind of thing I would have asked for and likely not any scene that stood out to me as being amazing anyway. I may just be imagining them. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Ultimately I felt like the humor carried the series to a positive score but it lacked diversity and a forward moving plot that would be needed for me to consider it truly great. There are only a handful of comedies that I've scored above 8/10 and it's usually a result of having additional depth beyond the comedy or being so outrageously funny that they're able to break this barrier. More on those later. If they're nominated at all.

Shaman King
@Great_Paul

Qtu7vcC

I remember thinking this show looked really cool... when I was a teenager. I was also less skilled at finding and watching anime back then, and anime was less easily accessible. A perfect storm that led to me never being able to see anything from the actual series. I did play play some of the games based on the series but I don't think they were very good nor would they have represented anything about the series very accurately. At least I hope not.

Looking at the general vibe and art style of this now I can't help but say this is like a 100% perfect accurate clone of exactly the series I would have in mind when making fun of generic shounen anime.

Golden Boy
@LOLIAmAnAlt

VrPq4HH

I know nothing about this except it's some kind of classic ecchi series. Whether it's good or not all I can say is that there's no way I could ever enjoy ecchi that was drawn in this washed out art style that 90's anime used.

Hunter x Hunter
@Eerieka

Y05ouzJ

Another shounen anime that I haven't seen. That will be a common theme of this list!

Anyway this is a show that has apparently been going on for 1,000 years and still hasn't ended. Good luck trying to get me to start an unfinished series. I have a hard enough time finishing things that are already fully written!

Devilman Crybaby
@NFUN

fpJklTf

I read a small part of the original manga, but I didn't really get into it. I have no idea how closely this would follow that. I do know that there's been only several dozen devilman adaptations, spinoffs, and remakes. So without a doubt there was a dire need to add another one to the pile.

On one hand literally PewDiePie likes this anime and so I must safely assume that it's nazi propaganda.

On the other hand I've heard from reliable sources such as zea imo that it's "good."

Odds that I actually watch it anytime soon are very very low. Not that I think it would be bad or anything but there's simply so many other things I'd like to do. It will be a weird day when I stop and think to myself 'wow I have successfully done almost everything that I would like to do in life. what is left? I guess I'll watch Devilman Crybaby.'

Angel Beats
@NBIceman

SSN2IIQ

I watched a few episodes of this series and did not like it one bit. I found every character to be boring or annoying. The engrish speaking guy, who was supposed to be funny, especially got on my nerves. I've scored this lower than almost every other "legitimate" anime that I've watched.

... All that being said, I think in retrospect the unusually low score may have been a reactionary thing. The series was considered pretty popular at the time it was airing and many people were talking about it quite a bit. This likely added to my annoyance factor when thinking about the series and caused me to rate it even lower than I would if I were just scoring it based on its own merits. Ultimately it's just another mediocre series that, in particular, was extra unappealing to me due to having a few factors that I personally disliked.

Lucky Star
@Mac_Arrowny

KO0YxPg

Leave it to Mac to nominate one of the few series that I've actually seen in full and rated favorably... and also I watched it so long ago that I barely remember anything about it. Okay. I'll do my best.

Is this series funny? That's a difficult question to answer. There were certainly parts that made me laugh. There were also entire episodes where I didn't laugh at anything that happened in the entire episode until the end segment which was basically almost its own entirely separate show. I think if I tried to watch this show again now I would have a verrrryyyyy difficult time getting through it.

Is it engaging? Probably not particularly. When I watched this show the first time I didn't have much going on in my life. I was often looking for ways to kill time and a series like this would have filled that niche. I think it's just entertaining enough that you can put it on and enjoy it. If there are certain aspects about Lucky Star that appeal especially to you then it might be even easier to get sucked in.

I remember thinking that Kagami acting tsundere toward Konata was really cute and this is likely one of those 'aspects' that would have kept me watching the show just to see what happened next. In truth, a lot has changed in the last decade. Yeah, it's been almost ten years since I've seen this show. Okay, so, first of all, there are a lot more series which have light shipping moments between cute female characters. In fact I would say almost every comedy series that comes out lately includes this aspect to some degree. I've honestly become so desensitized to it that I likely would never again consider it a point in favor of a show or against a show. It's just something that happens in every anime now.

With that in mind you have to ask the question of whether their specific relationship dynamic was very compelling or unique. Does it stand the test of time? For me... no. This series sits at an 8/10 which is the top barrier for most comedy anime as far as I'm concerned. Yet I know in my heart that if I tried to watch it again now that score would plummet. Best to just leave classics like this buried so that I don't have to face what it really was; a mediocre with some good qualities. Something I could never sit through 24 episodes of today.

I'm the same way, just with different series. I got tired of being fully caught up on things and being forced to wait for weekly releases. I'm a bit better about it with anime but with manga I will almost never start reading something now unless it is already finished. there are a few exceptions but even with those I wait and read full story arcs all in one sitting.

fair enough, but it's not the type of series that really appeals to me in the first place. I think it's just more likely that I watch dozens of other series before even thinking about HxH. and the rate I've been watching anime lately is like a few shows a year... so we're talking years before HxH even gets close to my radar.

nah I just think it looks goofy and especially wanted to make fun of myself for thinking it was cool when I was younger. there's plenty of stuff that looks lame and is actually really good. there's also plenty of stuff that looks nice but doesn't have any depth beyond that. basically don't judge a book by it's cover. similarly, I might be insulting the 'cover' here, but I'm not insulting the 'book.'

FLCL
@Pirateking2000

UYGF3oI

Another show that would have been on during my life as background noise at some point. With far fewer episodes I can pretty confidently say that I have actually "watched" the entire thing, but it was long enough ago that I barely remember any specific details about it. I remember that it had some visually interesting elements, I remember that it was weird, and I remember that I didn't like it very much.

I think an important thing to understand is that I am a weird person, and this means that weird things generally don't appeal to me just for the sake of being weird. So for a normal person they'll see a weird show and it gives them a window to something new; something they don't understand. That, itself, is an appealing aspect. But for me I'm already weird. Seeing abnormal things doesn't really show me anything that I can't see by using my own imagination. Ultimately the big question left remaining is whether it specifically does things that I find interesting. In this case the answer was no.

As for it being 'visually interesting' this has almost never been a factor in me enjoying a show so yeah. No bonus points there.

Crayon Shin-chan

I've seen snippets of this that I remember thinking were ... sort of... funny? Honestly it was so long ago that my sense of humor is entirely different so I can't even promise that any of the jokes would still land for me. Basically another Toonami show that I have very little to say about. Though I will remark how interesting it is that so many of them can be described as "visually interesting and weird." I guess they really knew their niche and they stuck to it.

Baccano!
@tazzyboyishere

ywcPf7x

An overall very mediocre show with some high points that tricked some people (including me) into thinking that it was very good. I know for a fact that, like Lucky Star, if I went and watched this series again right now I would struggle to ever get through it and the score that I gave to Baccano! in the past would fall faster than a colony being dropped on earth from outer space.

First of all I want to talk about the fact that the story feels more or less incomplete. It is structured in a way that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. They are roughly told in order, too, aside from the jumping around. But the issue is that huge portions of the story feel disconnected and some of them get almost no resolution or just get sudden endings that don't amount to anything. I remember having this impression when I originally watched it, but at the time I was more enamored by the "cool moments" and didn't let this bother me. There are even some OVAs that you can watch that I thought would explain the story a bit more. No, this is not the case. It's more random stuff happening that involves some of the same characters.

Next... the characters, characterization, and those oft praised "cool moments." This is something I realized when I tried to watch DRRR!!!! and couldn't even get through that series. It's something the author does and it just bugs me too much to let it go. Essentially this series just has a bunch of cool looking characters doing cool stuff for absolutely no reason. If you asked me why a bunch of people started killing each other on a train in Baccano! I honestly could not tell you. It's something that just sort of happened because it needed to. Did 'Rail Tracer' start killing people before or after they started killing each other? I don't even remember, and it doesn't matter -- either way his motivations make no sense. Why does Jaccuzi run at that guy and do a badass headbutt at the end of the series? Why wouldn't he have done this any of the 50 other times he was in danger before that? It wasn't a moment that was marked by any kind of character development. It was just a very static, shallow character doing something different than usual and with seemingly no explanation. And that's Baccano! in a nutshell. What's up with Chane? Do we know anything about her aside from the fact that she's a cute girl who can't talk? Why is she like some kind of master assassin and why do these abilities almost never come into play? Why bother including her in light of this fact???? Don't even bother trying to pretend that she has a complete story or character arc. She just does not. And there's about 5 or 10 too many characters in Baccano! who this statement can apply to. Combining this with the incredibly deep roster of characters involved in plots that don't even intersect with each other and you're left with a jumbled mess.

Eh, it's not really an issue of "I think these things might bother me." It really is a case of "I think about the story structure now and it bugs me." I'm just well aware of how my tastes have changed over the last decade as a result of my experiences. At this point I've watched so many series where cool things happen and they're also very well written. I just cannot imagine ever being satisfied again watching a show just for the sake of seeing cool stuff happen. It would be like agreeing to just have my cake when the alternative is to have my cake and eat it too.

Death Note
@pjbasis

Bp1p31H

A very good adaptation of a GREAT manga. Unlike some of the other classics, including ones that have been brought up in this topic already, Death Note is a series that I tend to enjoy even more each time I watch it. I feel like I always notice new things and make new connections. It's amazing how your impression of the first part of the series can change. Scenes that make it seem like Light is always one step ahead of L are completely changed in purpose, and you realize these are scenes which fully explain just how careless Light is and why L will repeatedly affirm that he is sure that Light is Kira. It's so freaking obvious from L's perspective because Light falls into every single trap while still walking away feeling like he just barely escaped. Brilliant stuff.

Light: A very interesting character who I spend a very long time wanting nothing more than to watch him finally get destroyed. I feel like the author amazingly sets him up and maintains a perfect balance at all times. He almost makes it seem like he wants you to root for Light, and things go just right for Light so often that it feels like this is a manga about him succeeding at his grand goals. Yet, all the same, his downfall is so satisfying to watch.

L: A super cool character that is quirky and unique in all of the right ways. His little schemes are amazing and one thing that has always impressed me is how... consistent they tend to be. On a first watch it's easy to dismiss his intelligence as being handwaved, but the more I studied this series the more I found that everything he does has a purpose and leads to his later conclusions and actions. Amazingly well written.

L's Team: Soichiro, Matsuda, Aizawa are the standouts here. That being said I think all of the supporting characters on this investigation squad were really strong. There is just a sense of familiarity and content that you get whenever watching them take actions on screen. They might not be superhuman geniuses but this grounded collection of individuals make the investigations feel more real and the stakes feel more human.

Misa: Intentionally designed to be at least somewhat grating, some people will find her more annoying than intended. Others, like me, don't really feel all that bothered by her. It probably helps that the 'obsessive stalker' is a type I find totally adorable.

Weak Links: I think Mello and Mikami are probably the two weakest characters of what would be considered the main cast. Mikami is entertaining but not very deep, and in the anime we are given very little time to know him or care about him. Mello is less entertaining but a bit more clever, and he does have some hidden depth if you care enough about him to look for it.

Near: When I finished reading the manga for the first time I had already watched the anime twice. I would say, at that time, Near was definitely my favorite character. After having watched the anime a few more times since then it's a lot more close. I think Near is still my favorite but it's not as definite. Similar to L he is a very cool character. He starts with an unfair advantage in that he's given a lot of evidence rather than having to start from scratch, but I never felt this undermined the conclusions he arrived at by looking at this evidence. He's cool in similar ways that L is, but I found that Near was a character I identified with more and that caused me to like him more ultimately. L is a super genius but he's also the kind of guy who can do martial arts, play tennis like a genius wizard, and generally seemed good at making friends and getting along with others. It almost feels too unrealistic. Near's genius comes at a cost; he's immature, socially destructive, and emotionally unavailable. The SPK followed him because he was obsessed with the truth and because he had the drive to win. It wasn't because they liked him as a person. I always found that very interesting.
