2. Owlboy
I love the absurdity of Owlboy's concept. Who decided to make a platforming game with a CHARACTER WHO CAN FLY AT ALL TIMES?!?! But GOD DAMN it works. The hook of owlboy is that, obviously, you are an owl. So rather than jumping challenges, it's more flying around obstacles and puzzle solving. You can also carry another character (you have a choice of 3 different ones throughout the game), and this character is the one with the guns generally to fight foes. I really enjoyed the options you had in combat because of this, and fighting in general is fun + pretty tough in a fair way. There are high stakes in the game's story, which feeds well into the intensity in combat.

While Owlboy has some standard "dungeon" type areas, with your typical mix of puzzles and combat, it also does a good job with its overworld. You can get upgrades by collecting coins, and I enjoyed doing so, and the rewards that came with it, as a result. It also helps that this world is absolutely beautiful. It's got the look of a high end SNES game with way clearer and more polished graphics, constantly taking in the sights as I went helped me feel more immersed into the world.

To top it off, the story is surprisingly really well done. It follows a mute owl on his QUEST TO SAVE THE WORLD. Ok, it doesn't sound as good when you put it that way, but there's a deep backstory to this owl world, some memorable characters (all the playable characters are great), and Otus himself is incredibly easy to root for. The plot does a good job keeping you going throughout, giving you different motivations and keeping a few questions out there most of the way. My only real problem with the story is how much happens at the very end, it can be hard to take it all in and figure out exactly what happened without reading some stuff on message boards or the wiki.

But in the end, it is still a powerful experience. The bond between the characters here is really special, that was my first thought when I started to remember playing this game. That bond centers the game, helps you relate to everyone, and gives the big moments in the story the power that they had. It's fortunate that the gameplay was up to task in matching the story in quality. Must play for everyone.

1. Celeste
Unlike Owlboy, I'm not sure if this is a MUST play for everyone. There are a certain sect of people that don't like games this difficult, but I love this kind of stuff, and Celeste was simply a tremendous experience. It is my favorite platformer of all time, outside of the last 2 Rayman games. It is that good.

Celeste's power is its simplicity. You don't have tons of fancy moves here. You can jump, do a mid-air dash (you can eventually do TWO mid-air dashes), and wall climb. So you are pretty much just PLATFORMING in a pretty raw way. Now, this has been done by a few games in recent years, but Celeste still manages to stand out.

First off, the look of it is obviously captivating. The game's animations are also beautiful, and make the game almost as fun to watch as it is to play. Your character changes appearance with each dash, which not only is a nice visual indicator of how many dashes you have used, but also ties in to the story of the different people within Celeste (the game tackles mental illness). The game is constantly clever in this way.

And the story of overcoming mental illness (while climbing a mountain, maybe a little too in your face, but sure, it works) is powerful throughout, as Celeste essentially learns to deal with this by climbing a mountain. My favorite part of the story though is the interaction with other characters on this mountain. They are all weird, and there are several spots where you get to small talk with them (one character in particular gets a lot of screen time). I hate small talk in real life, so video game small talk for the sake of character development is usually especially painful. But man, there are some really great moments in those conversations. They feel authentically awkward early on, and as you learn more about the characters, they get better and better.

And of course, the platforming is as precise as you would hope. Sometimes mid air dashes felt a little awkward to land perfectly, the Switch's controls aren't always perfect, so that could be part of my issue, but thats the biggest complaint I can muster. By the end, you are performing some very complicated sequences without even thinking about it much, everything just gets ingrained into you so well. And yes, the game is pretty difficult, but respawns are instant and usually not harsh. Also, the actual game isn't THAT bad most of the time in my opinion. The true challenge in the game is acquiring strawberries, which are totally optional. Some of these took me 50+ tries to get. Some I tried a few times and didn't even bother to continue on, but you don't have to do any. Unless you are totally dreadful at these games, I think most people will be able to get through it.

The main game is decently meaty for an indie title like this, plus there is collecting all the side content and "b-side" levels , which are even harder. I decided against deep diving into that stuff, but there is a lot there, and this game is pretty damn replayable due to how fun it is on its own, and I say that as someone who doesn't really like replaying games.

Celeste hits every note that it could here, the look, the story, the characters, and the gameplay. There are tons of platformers on the market that land 1 or 2 of those. Some of them have a cool gimmick that helps carry them through, but these kind of games just never land all of the elements like this, and that makes Celeste truly special, and my favorite game on the switch. It will have at least a few games try and take it down this year, but it's still an all time classic for me.

ps if you haven't played rayman yet, you have to play it. I'm seriously considering buying it again just to have it mobile.

Celeste completely snuck up on me. Saw the trailer, thought nothing of it, bought it more or less on a whim when it did come out, and it's solidly one of my all time favorite games now. I'm generally not a 2D-platformer guy but it hits every note for me.

I highly recommend doing B sides and also going back and getting every strawberry. The UI shows you hints on where strawberries are so it achieves this awesome balance of exploring without feeling lost or frustrated trying to find that last one.

Only thing is I felt the mechanics going downhill in the last few worlds, so I'm not sure if I would want to do those B sides. The first 3 worlds are brilliant though and more is definitely good, and the 4th one was fine too. I might end up doing them all eventually, but the first 3 are definitely mandatory.

Also I hated the graphics (soooo sick of pixelish art, and the 3 different art styles is meh), except for some cool effects. But I still loved it for the gameplay alone, and the presentation with the charm and story is also great. It's definitely a game where you can love it even if you don't care for 50% of it.

If you want another game that feels like that, play A Hat In Time. It's even more extreme because the graphics AND controls AND overall story are all bad, but it totally makes up for it in interesting ways.

Golf Story isn't a good golf game. The mechanics are really simple to pick up, but there's no real nuance to it at all once you master it, like there is in other arcade golf games. I had everything down in like, two hours of playing.

Icehawk posted...
In the last tournament of the game, I had to nail a medium range putt with a wicked slope to clinch victory, and that was beyond intense.

https://twitter.com/MrSmartGuyB8/status/978006802091581440

Not to say I didn't enjoy it, though. It oozes charm like crazy, and the writing is preeeetty good. I'm glad I played it after all is said and done, but there's absolutely no reason for me to go back to it ever again, like I will for Mario Golf or Hot Shots games.

That said, it does at least have a true test of skill in Galf. Now that's where you separate the men from the boys. I got a -3 in Night Galf, which I have to assume is the world record.

I mean, that's pretty much the standard for any arcade sports game. I can't think of any new mechanics I figured out after 2 hours in NBA jam or NFL blitz, doesn't mean the core stuff isn't fun! And having an actual story mode gives the game an edge over Mario Golf imo.

Good point Waluigi, I do think I could use a closing statement of sorts.

As a FORMER NINTENDO HATER, I will say, I think if you are a gamer, and if the money isn't a huge deal, I think you kind of have to own a switch. The versatility of it is really fantastic, and I just love the convenience of being able to play wherever I want. Steamworld Heist is a game that probably wouldn't have been quite as fun to play in a conventional way. But laying on the couch, TV on in the background? Awesome! That versatility means it is by far the best console to play indie games on, and there are a lot of great indie games out there. Out of my top 6, "elite tier" games, 5 are not your standard big time retail games.

But obviously, there is a price to pay in terms of system power. If I could only own one console, Switch would be my last choice of the 3. But once you own either the Xbox or probably more ideally, the PS4, the second console of choice would easily be the Switch. Being Nintendo, you will still get plenty of exclusive games, and it brings plenty that the other two do not.

Owning a Switch does remind me a lot of many of the issues I have had with Nintendo over the years. Being so behind the curve in online remains frustrating, and while I have enjoyed Mario and Zelda, I still have problems with both. I do think the best way for Nintendo to be the king for the next 5 years would be to kill off their 3DS support, and start putting all those games on the Switch. It just makes the most sense to me. There is no need to have 2 different "mobile" consoles, especially when one is far more powerful. I am glad that it seems a full fledged Fire Emblem and Pokemon game will be coming to the Switch, that helps, but man, everything going on Switch would put it right up there with the other guys, even if the system still wouldn't be powerful enough to get all the big 3rd party releases.

As for Upcoming Switch games that I am excited for...

Donkey Kong: Jungle Freeze- I loved DKC as a kid, so an updated DK game sounds like a blast to me, and obviously it was well received before.

Mario Tennis Aces- As previously stated, I really enjoy arcade sports games. If the story mode is well made, that would be a kick. But eitherway, this game is much more up my alley for when friends are over versus a racing game like Mario Kart.

Wargroove- I enjoyed Advance Wars back IN THE DAY. I'm down for a medieval version.

Hollow Knight- Well reviewed, looks like a fun metroidvania.

Runner 3- I totally dug Runner 2 on my Xbox 360, playing it mobile sounds even better.

Fire Emblem- Duh

Yoshi- I tend to like the Nintendo 2D platformers more than the 3D ones.

Project Octopath- Played the demo. Neat little combat system, and fun concept. Seems like it does enough different to keep it fresh from a standard JRPG.

Shin Megami Tensei- Loved Persona 5, and I believe this is from the same company? I haven't played any of these games, but I'll give it a go!

No More Heroes 3- I've never played one, but that trailer in Nintendo Direct looked super cool!

Dragon Quest 11- I last played DQ8 and loved it, I hope it comes to America.

Pokemon- Haven't played one in depth since the 2nd iteration of games. I think it's been long enough where it'll feel fresh. I probably won't be super into online play, as I hate taking the time to learn all the strategies I'd likely need to figure out to be good, but as long as the 1P is done well, I'm sure I can enjoy it.

Of course, only 2 of these have release dates, which is a concern right now. Really hope we get more dates on stuff soon!

Nintendo basically already has discontinued support for the 3DS. It's only getting the bare minimum amount of new games trickling out so that Nintendo can say they're still supporting it without it being a bold-faced lie. It has zero big games announced still coming to it. At least Nintendo games anyway. Just remakes/ports/collections (and Sushi Striker? lol). Atlus is still chugging along, as Atlus is wont to do, and there will probably still be a few localizations of stuff that's been out in Japan for awhile (though it'll be curious to see if Nintendo still steps forward to do any of the localizations themselves, like Yo-kai Watch 3 or the 3DS version of DQXI). But yeah, all the main development of big titles has moved onto the Switch already.

Though I guess there could be a curve ball thrown at E3 to reveal some random totally new game from a 1st party IP or something.

Hollow Knight seems right up your alley. Incredibly well made game.

Playing more Owlboy, I didn't like the Jungle dungeon very much. The dark parts were frustrating, and I ran into several glitches. I got stuck in the walls for quite a while, and hitting the spikes and not being able to escape until I died was annoying too (this might not have been a glitch I guess, but it doesn't seem like great design if so). The game's been okay with no map so far, but I got lost here a couple times and would've really appreciated one. Wasn't really into any of the bosses, and the story was kinda minimal here. Sad that Twig's become the third party member too. Always thought he was pretty annoying, and was kinda hoping Anne would join permanently instead. His justifications were pretty weak (he started hanging out with robots because he wanted friends? Really?

Yeah, I'm with you on the map. One of the later dungeons, I totally went in circles for a while, but I was pretty into the game so I guess it didn't bug me at the time. A map would have been useful for the world map, and definitely would have helped in at least that dungeon.

No. I find it to be a good game, but there is no guarantee you'll like it, even if you loved Dig. They are just completely different genres. If you have ever enjoyed strategy games of any sort, I'm sure it'll have some appeal though. It does some really cool things.
