Hey so anime is pretty cool, and I asked you guys for some stuff to rank adn got about double the amount I was planning for whoops

Anyway, this ranking was hard, since I rarely think about ranking my favorite shows and movies, and there are a lot of things on here I haven't seen in years on top of that. Regardless, I will at least be making an effort to keep my write-ups engaging and thoughtful. The biggest problem that arises is that it's very difficult to have something interesting to say about 101 anime, so some will actually be complete garbage, and I apologize for that in advance. So I hope you guys enjoy the list!

THIS TOPIC WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THINGS! I WILL TRY TO BLACK BAR WHAT I CAN, BUT I WON'T PROMISE ANYTHING!

BONUS. Noein (2005)

Actual PM sent to pyresword...

"So... I didn't recognize the show when you nominated it, but I looked it up and saw that I had watched it, so I didn't bother reading anything about it at the time. And now that I read the description and researched it a bit, I still have no recollection of it.

So, if you want to see me rank it, I can, but if you'd rather see me rank something else, that might be better..."

I looked at the pictures and nothing. I looked at the synopsis and nothing. I checked out a trailer and nothing. Seriously, what is this show. There are a few shows on this list that I really shouldn't have ranked due to my failing memory, but I at least remembered some aspect of them. Noein is a complete mystery to me, and I scored it an 8/10, which serves only to confuse me more. I have no idea when or how I watched this, and I'm actually a little curious in checking it out again, but when my Internet is as bad as it is, I'd rather not waste time on something that doesn't actually sound all too special.

101. School Days (2007)

To say School Days has one of the most infamous reputations in the medium would be an understatement. Whether you love or hate the show, I don't think anyone can deny that it's an insane ride, both literally and figuratively.

I am one of those people who hates it, as seen by my ranking. Though I did binge the entire thing in high school, so it wasn't due to a lack of entertainment. I'm not exactly opposed to shows going absolutely off the rails, but the way School Days goes about it feels awkward. It goes from this kinda shitty romantic drama into a really shitty psychological horror, and it's hard to remember stuff that happens before shit starts going down, aside from Makoto banging every girl with a pulse.

I guess that's one thing to commend it for. It gave us a harem where the protagonist actually uses his harem effectively. It just so happens that a couple of the ladies in his harem are deranged psychopaths, and it ultimately ends with him getting murdered by one and decapitated by another. The "Nice Boat" meme was one of the first anime memes I ever witnessed, so that's cool I guess. Anyway, this show is not very good.

I really don't get this show. I mean, the story is simple enough on the whole, as it's just a bunch of people being haunted by a monster that is actually just their past fears and regrets, but I don't understand a lot of the decisions that came from the writing and directing.

It attempts to create an ensemble cast, but most of the characters are pretty pointless. You get some episodes where everyone will just ramble on about jack shit for half the episode. There are a ton of awful animation cuts. Some episodes end out of nowhere. The CG monster near the end is one of the few things I've seen to actually cause me to laugh out loud unintentionally. And in the end, nearly all of the characters are left with no resolution, seemingly through their own decision. I just don't get this show.

It was entertaining to watch though. I wouldn't dare to put it on the level of "So bad it's good", but it was a lot like watching a car crash. You feel awful for watching it happen, but dammit, your curiosity sometimes gets the better of you.

Anyway, this ranking was hard, since I rarely think about ranking my favorite shows and movies

Clearly the solution is keep an updated ranking of all the shows you watch as you watch them. You never know when I'll have to post a list or a ranking after all!

Anyways, Noein is a show that's in a really weird spot for me. It has a lot of incredibly cool ideas, but ultimately I think it falls short in many respects. I don't actually like it all that much overall (it is ranked 127 out of 166 on my aforementioned ranking), but I do think it's a very interesting show both to watch and to talk about, which is why I nominated it. It's also in this weird spot where I do recommend it despite not having that high an opinion of it. It's pretty unique and I am still very glad I watched it.

To give an idea of the type of show you'd be in for, Land of the Lustrous reminded me of Noein in many ways actually. (Though LotL was much better imo)

You know what maybe I should be moving this show higher up in my rankings. Will have to think on this.

This could be true, but I don't really have a big problem with that even if it is.

Also A Place Further Than the Universe may very well be coming in at #1 next week when it finishes, so it's not a completely insurmountable barrier either way >.>

99. Yosuga no Sora (2010)

The gif sums it up. Yosuga no Sora, if I recall correctly, kickstarted the Integrity phase in b8anime that lead us all to become bitter assholes that hate anime, much like Miyazaki does. It's about a brother and sister who move to their childhood home so that the guy can bang every girl there. Problem is, he's also got the hots for his underage sister. Though that's not really a problem to our hero.

It's a visual novel adaptation that actually shows the sex scenes, which is cool in it's own way, but the plot that dares to explore the morality of incest is a bit up it's ass, and it turns into a show that's more hilarious than thought-provoking. I do like that it separated the routes within the show instead of awkwardly trying to piece everything together, but it's also done in twelve episodes, which isn't ideal.

Overall, if you remove the sex, I think the show just becomes unwatchable garbage, but those scenes are always good for a laugh due to the bad animation and silly cinematic cuts. Not really enough of a trainwreck to recommend watching for the shitshow, but the gif will be forever etched into my brain.

https://78.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m015qzO2st1r6bgrzo1_500.gif

Of all the "worst of the worst" shows, I decided to give this one the benefit of the doubt simply for being 19 minutes long. It's the lowest-rated MAL title as far as I'm aware, and while I understand, I feel it's undeserved to an extent.

The show attempts to tell some epic sci-fi horror in the span of 19 minutes, and such a feat just isn't possible. No idea who commissioned that idea, but they were dumb. Combine that with bad art and awkward animation, and yeah, this OVA is pretty bad. Maybe the VN is better, but this doesn't inspire much confidence.

I have a pretty bad memory of Noein too. I think the dub outtakes are more memorable than the series itself.

Strangely, one thing I remember about Noein is that the main boy was named Yuu and there was a girl named Ai (as in, "you and I")... back in 2007 or so when I was starting to learn Japanese, that struck me as being a neat coincidence. >_>

I regret watching Mayoiga. I thought it would at least be "okay" but it was so, so bad for all the reasons you mentioned. God what a pointlessly large cast of useless characters.

I don't regret watching School Days, though. I mean, yeah, it's bad, but I'm glad I got to experience its badness.

I think this is the show where I just kinda realized I was tired of Keys schtick. It had the same moeblob character designs, the same dramatic foreshadowing, and the same story structure that feels really disjointed. I dont really have a ton to say, since I dropped it not even halfway through, but I found everything Id watched to be tedious and predictable. It didnt even nail the comedy, which is something I feel the creators do well with.

To be honest, I don't remember much about this one at all. A kid basically gets a baby doll harem, which is one of the worst harems you can possibly have. As far as plot goes, I'm at a loss.

However, the one thing I absolutely do remember is the character, Suiseiseki. This abomination of a character was one of the most infuriating pieces of shit ever. Her personality was awful, her cadence was annoying, and her design blew ass (Though all of the characters have this issue). I think she's the reason I forget the rest of the details, because my hatred for her overshadowed everything and caused me to lose interest inthe rest of the show, so yeah, this ranking is pretty weird.

Though to be fair, the show did have some pretty solid music. It was one of the first shows where I really noticed the soundtrack, and it's some solid stuff.

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSDUDO4e7R5IQ1hqGStJjjKa07UqKDnrJBDp9Vbxuf8BWtYk6M5

Zodiac War is the story of a battle royale competition among 12 characters representing the Chinese zodiac. It's a show that doesn't shy away from violence, as each episode is loaded with gore. It's also not very good.

The first thing to know about this show is that it's pretty damn edgy. I do use that word a bit too much to describe things I don't like, but the first episode is the backstory for the Boar sign, and how she got to her position through making her sister, the initial recipient, kill so many people to the point where she becomes insane and unable to participate. It proceeds to kill her off at the hands of a Playboy bunny, after spending a full episode showing how hardcore she is. I thought this was hilarious when I firs watched it, since I thought it was an actual joke. But you soon figure out that such is simply the formula this show puts forth in nearly every episode. You get full backstories on characters, only for them to die when it's over. There's nobody to get attached to or to root for because nobody has any depth outside of their origin.

overall, it was one of those shows where I couldn't stop myself from watching for whatever reason. I think there are a few glimpses of quality on occasion, namely in the connected stories of Ox and Tiger, but the show is too short and the writing too shallow to actually meet a reasonable standard of quality.

This is another show I don't remember a whole lot about. It's about a girl who accidentally drinks some potion and becomes a zombie, and the dude who makes it falls in love with her. It's a pretty weird show that promotes necrophilia and incest, since the main character's two love interests are a literal corpse and his cousin. So he's basically a gigantic bag of shit.

The main issue is how boring it is though. It wasn't very funny and the characters were flat, which doesn't fly for me when it comes to romcoms. I guess human/zombie romance was a unique idea, but Warm Bodies did it later and was actually fun to watch.

This is a slice of life about fox girls tending to a hot springs inn. It's an episodic show that's focused more on being "comfy" than anything, and I found it to be extremely boring.

I just don't know what to say about this one.. I don't think there's anything necessarily bad about it because I don't actually think anything about it. It's one of the most dull shows I've ever watched, which is why I quit after two episodes. apparently it's shoujou ai, which is interesting, but I never got that vibe.

I have to give this show credit, it succeeds at exactly what its trying to do. I watched this initially because it has the same director who did Baccano! and Natsume, but this is clearly a very different type of show. Its about an older fat dude falling in love with a high schooler who he finds out is actually his sister. I think theres some tragic tale surrounding the girl, but I dont remember much about the shows plot, and I wasnt able to finish it.

What I do remember, however, is he experience of watching it, and its probably the most uncomfortable Ive felt while watching a show, and thats including times when my roommates saw me watching Love Stage and Keijo. It tells of an extremely awkward, one-sided, incestuous love with a pretty large age gap, and its always difficult to keep pushing on. I think I dropped it when the girl walks in on him sniffing her underwear while doing the laundry or something. I do commend the show for not being ecchi, which I feel would have cheapened its goal. But the goal it achieves is something that is clearly not for me.

This is why i wonder why people watch things based on director/studio

Unless they change the story heavily you should watch a show based on the original sources (manga, VN, LN) writer history since the actual story content will be based on source material writer unless its anime original story

All directors and studios do is just make the anime look pretty enough and theres enough episodes to tell a story for that season

You say this dismissively but there's a lot more to this then you're letting on I think. I think the way studios choose to animate/present something, the atmosphere they try to evoke, the music they choose, etc has a pretty large impact on what the final product ends up looking like. Of course original story content is important to, but I would only put it on equal footing with things like director and studio. (And I do consider both. I never would have watched Amanchu if it weren't by the Aria author, for example.)

Two examples immediately coming to mind in support of this are Bakemonogatari and Girls' Last Tour. Both of those anime have pretty distinctive directing decisions put into them, and I think it's easy to imagine that the show could have been totally different if another group had been put in charge of the adaptation. (And then because these particular studios/directors were able to do this for these cases, that's going to influence how I treat future projects of there's accordingly.) Of course even in other cases I think the studio and director are still a pretty big ingredient in the show's overall quality--just in ways that aren't as immediately obvious.
