i didn't contradict myself! powers's role is plot-minimal (as is most of 2-4's second trial) but it's possibly the most enjoyable part!

man the TAKE THAT with the cell phone is so great

Peak Phoenix vs. Peak Edgeworth is the best here

Mia is the perfect sidekick for it too

and this is one of the rare instances where they use the gallery to good effect

2-4 the best

De Killer naming Adrian as his client (and the silent tension right before he does it) is great and completely flips the momentum of the case

Phoenix: If I take this verdict right now...I'd be betraying his trust. (...His trust...? I never thought about it until now...I...I trust him...?)
Mia: ...Yes, you do.

so good

Phoenix asking de Killer how much his fee is might be the best comedic bit in the series

I always wondered if, in the DD bad ending, he'd seek out a certain John Doe, hoping that his fee hadn't changed, with a special request in mind.
Too grimderp for Phoenix? Probably.

I kinda like de Killer's testimonies here because none of them are straightforward. It requires some clever usage of pressing in particular ways that you don't really see elsewhere in the series. There's one in particular where the game makes it seem like pressing is absolutely the wrong thing to do (and it still gives me pause because it looks like de Killer is about to lose it), but you still have to go through with it. There's also one where you have to press and then tell the Judge that what de Killer said wasn't important in order to get the piece of testimony you need, which you wouldn't normally think of doing.

Actually, one of the things I kinda miss about the newer games is how they don't use pressing as effectively as Takumi did at times, where you sometimes had to press in a certain order or go back after you heard something somewhere else in the testimony first. It could be kind of frustrating or annoying at times, but I still enjoyed it.

"I can't count on the evidence to help me anymore."

*Court Record button disappears*

such a great little touch

it's also cool that the game refuses to let you save during this part so you have to commit to one or the other

The "contradiction" you have to point out in Amara's photo is pretty dumb if you've guessed the twist (which has been heavily telegraphed at this point). You have to play along with this weird assumption that Amara couldn't have had another baby based only on Dhurke's word.

Yeah, one of the dumbest parts of 6-5 is that everyone assumes the baby must have been Nahyuta even though it makes no sense based on the information the game gives you.

Speaking of the game being dumb about obvious stuff, perhaps the worst offender is 3-2 with the Sacred Urn, the box, and the paint. It's pretty clear almost right away what happens, but the game doesn't let you "solve" it until the end of the second investigation day.

i didn't mind that one much since it's such a lighthearted case. generally i'm much more forgiving with cases that don't demand to be taken seriously.

also, i have to admit i love the end of investigation day 2, so specifically that instance i enjoyed holding as a climax!

Eh, I just think the excuses the game gives you are lame. Phoenix tells Maya not to touch the box with the paint stains on it because there might be clues to the thief's identity on it...even on the second day when Atmey's already confessed and Ron is your client. It's just really flimsy.

but man 3-2's music is so good

Atmey's theme, the Mask*DeMasque theme, and soon to be Godot's theme for the first time

6-5 completed. That was a ride!

I'll try to post some final thoughts later on. For now, I'll just say that the last big twist genuinely caught me off guard and actually made me think back to all the related plot points, only to realize it made perfect sense. Finally nailing the culprit was almost as satisfying as Engarde.

here's that message, by the way!

Okay, I made it to the second trial day (whoa, Prosecutor Ga'ran? Heck yeah, a non-Nahyuta opponent for the finale!), and I have a boatload of theories! Don't confirm or deny these, obviously, but I just want to roll these off so we can see how right or wrong I end up being!

1. I'm 99% positive Nayna is the killer, and she's also probably Queen Amara, although I can't quite figure out why she'd want to frame Dhurke for it.

2. Inga has prosopagnosia like Ace in 999 does, which is why he has those notes of physical descriptions, and it's why Nayna removed her hat, so he wouldn't recognize her. Should make for an interesting Divination Seance if I'm right!

3. Speaking of which, I'm assuming we'll get a Divination Seance of Apollo's dad when it comes time to tackle the truth of 23 years ago. Should be good!

4. Queen Ga'ran doesn't actually have any spiritual powers. Ahlbi showed us that picture of her supposedly in the middle of a channeling, but she looks exactly the same. That's why she wants the Founder's Orb, and why they had to abduct Maya Fey. I'm assuming she was in on the plot with Inga. Ga'ran = Morgan Fey; Amara = Misty Fey? I think so! I guess that would make Inga...Ini Miney?

5. On that note, Rayfa is actually Amara's daughter, not Ga'ran's, which is why she does have spiritual powers. Pretty sure that baby in the picture is her, not Nahyuta, based on how she reacted to seeing it. I'm thinking that's why Nayna foiled the plot--to protect Rayfa because I'm thinking Ga'ran would've killed off Rayfa once she had the spiritual power from the Holy Mother.

6. Speaking of which, I wonder if Maya will channel her at some point or if it's going to end up being one of those "We'd better not ever do that" type things. Well, I guess Amara could, too, since she should know the Holy Mother's true name. I imagine Maya will be a witness at some point since she was in the room when the murder happened. Man, they brought Maya back, but we don't ever get her in the role we all wanted to see her in as a real assistant. Maybe in the DLC case!

Anyway, I usually don't have this many theories, but these all seem like natural conclusions to draw, which means the game is intentionally misleading me and I'll be horribly wrong or I had a rare moment of clarity. I guess we'll see!

the first time I played the main reason I didn't believe Atmey could be Mask*DeMasque was because there was no way his nose could fit inside that mask

3-2 trial day 1 complete! I like how breezy it is, especially after how long the investigation day is.

Also, it's kind of neat that the very first thing Phoenix argues during Gumshoe's testimony is that the Mask*DeMasque who stole the Sacred Urn had to be a fake because it didn't fit his M.O. and it turns out he's completely right! It just doesn't come back around until much later.

mask*demasque 2, probably. though glen elg isn't exactly super-memorable either, and i don't remember the master's name from 6-4

deid mann might be the worst, but at that point the localizers were going for the memes. hard to hate.

WHAT

Glen Elg is one of the best victims we never get to meet

but yeah the DeMasque impostor in E1-5 probably takes the cake because the second murder there feels so unimportant

glen elg is cool because of the the scouter he wears and he's in a cool case, but it's easy to forget he's part of 3-3 due to everything else going on in that case, i think

is AAI2 the game with the best set of victims?

it's hard to forget Elg's a part of it because the entire case revolves around what Elg did at the time he was poisoned (even if it was a fake Elg half the time)

JFA might have the best set of victims actually

this discussion is reminding me just how absurd 3-3 was!

juan is probably the only above-average victim to me in AA2.

Juan Corrida is probably the best victim you never get to meet, but Russell Berry's up there, too. Turner Grey has one of the best victim dying moments ever with that image of him shooting the gun with a knife sticking out of his chest. Dustin Prince has one of the best name puns in the series.

AA3 has pretty good victims aside from Kane Bullard, shoutout to Doug Swallow for trying to be a good dude and protect Phoenix from his murderous ex-girlfriend

Yeah, Bullard is the weak link, but T&T's victims are pretty solid otherwise.
