The top ones are tend to just be overused memes, insanely safe and popular political opinions or eyerollingly bad sarcasm. Are there any other similar websites (in both size and diversity of topics) where comments that disagree from the opinions of the statistical average user aren't hidden?

yeah 4chan is pretty much your best choice for actual free discussion, but its also a place with its own heavy shitposting culture you gotta get used to
stick to boards about specific stuff, if you like a popular game find a general on /vg/ and stay away from the trash traps: b,r9000, and s4s (also pol)

My only exposure to 4chan is metaposts on other sites about their right wing nationalist shit posting, love of extreme and illegal porn, and videos/pictures of death and violence. I don't want anything to do with all of that. Is there a larger more tame subculture over there and is it easy to avoid the awful and illegal shit?

see all that stuff you were told about is almost entirely contained on the 4 boards I said to avoid, being on the vidya game board /v/ almost feels like a completely different website than the hellhole that is /pol/ or/b/
its not some scary illegal boogeyman website like some would have you believe, its really just a normal forum with a lot of unmoderated cursing and fighting with a couple 18+ boards that we call "containment boards" for a reason

This is why I find a upvote/downvote system irksome.

What I've found uncomfortable about Reddit is the big size of some of the communities on there. Also what you pointed out: split opinion or controversial posts tend to get hidden.

Its almost like

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but comments starting with "it's almost as if/it's almost like" followed by something that isn't particularly helpful or interesting are exactly what I had in mind when making this topic. I found it amusing it wormed its way into this topic, so thank you.

This only works at the highest level. In order to sort subthreads by controversial you have to click on the parent comments one by one as you go deeper into the chain. It works, but it's painful as all hell and it stifles most conversation towards the bottom anyway.

That's a fair point. This is really only a consistently crippling problem in the gigantic subs. Some of the smaller, more niche communities are a lot better.
