Seriously though.

New story chapter came out today, confirming that Urza was indeed a dick, in case that wasnt clear.

I honestly don't see a noticeable difference in the stories.

Yes there's a more consistent voice between the chapters since they are being written by a single person, but the quality to me is the same.

I think people were just way to harsh on the stories before.

Plus there's been a couple of times now in Martha's writing where something she wrote is incorrect in Dominaria lore and I don't know if that means it's something Magic changed the canon of or if Martha just wasn't familiar with the part in question.

Thats because Ixalan and Eldritch Moon were standouts, but most were mediocre to bad with a few glimmers of awesome (Ob Nixilis in BFZ, Yahenni in Kaladesh).

I generally think the stories have been consistently improving. BFZ was kind of a low point for Magic story in a lot of ways, but it's gradually gotten better since.

it's weird only being on a plane for 1 set

it feels like we're gone before we've even arrived

We technically dont know what the fall set is yet so we could be on Dominaria again.

But probably not.

Yea the Ixalan stories were pretty great. Having the consistency in this set is nice as well.

I think their rationale is fine, there's no point extending something to two or three sets if it can be done better in one. Have to see how it's actually executed though.

This. The only bad thing is that we cant do staggered multicolor blocks a la Ravnica/RTR. RTR/Gatecrash/Dragons Maze was a lot of fun to draft.

Mechanically, I think its good. No more Born of the Gods travesties, and R&D has more creative freedom without being tied to previous (potentially bad) themes.

i think mechanically it is a great decision, small sets are a pain

story-wise... it just so happens that this time we're only staying here for one set, which will feel strange. Not as much time to get invested in the "monster of the week"

we'll see what happens- almost seems like the main villain will be defeated before we get to play with any of the cards!

Well they said that we might still stay on a single plane over multiple sets and maybe even have a mechanic carry over. They just arent beholden to it anymore, nor does one set mix Limited with anything else.

I haven't played Standard/Draft regularly since Theros/Khans era, so I am heavily biased against small sets and wacky block structures just because you NEED to have a block structure and it's getting stale. I think overall it's a good move with way less potential for downside that the two set blocks + double rotation had.

I think it helps with people saying we aren't on Dominaria long enough, too. I'm not sure we would've gone back at all if Wizards didn't have the freedom to experiment with a super nostalgia set. And given the immensely positive fan reaction, I wouldn't be surprised if they're going to start looking at sets in development and make one set on Dominaria instead.

Forgot to activate slimefoot at opponent's eot multiple times during the prerelease, directly causing a game loss in at least one scenario. Ended up going 2-2.

I went 3-1 with a janky UW control deck. Basically got carried by two Shalai and In Bolas's Clutches. And occasionally slamming the 2 mana 2/2 first strike hexproof black guy early.

Sealed felt kinda strange. I'm looking forward to trying out a draft of this set.

I went 2-2 with a fairly medium RG deck splashing black for Vicious Offering, Cast Down, and The Eldest Reborn. I had decent threats and a passable amount of removal but had a hard time dealing with large legendary creatures. I lost one close game to Evra, Halcyon Witness equipped with Dub, which I was utterly incapable of doing anything about, and lost another match pretty handily to Aryel, Knight of Windgrace. I did get to play a turn 5 Verdant Force off Radha in one game though, so I did live the dream at least once.

I'm hopeful for draft being great. Sealed might suck, but then it almost always does in my opinion.

It might be because this format is quite a bit slower than the previous four formats and so it feels more clunky and "bomb-y" than usual. I thought it was kind of reminiscent of a core set format though; clean and kind of "back to basics" with a few gimmicks, but nothing as pervasive as energy/exert/tribal.

Most annoying card I played against was Shalai. That card sucks to deal with, especially on turn 4.

I did have an alternate deck in my pool that seemed pretty interesting and I wish I had actually put together at least once. I was going to build UB mega control. I was thinking of playing some durdley cheap creatures to block with, all my removal and bounce, three Divinations, and a couple of mediocre 6 drops to actually kill with. The icing on the cake would have been The Mirari Conjecture. It didn't look like a consistent deck but it might have actually worked out in some of my matches. At least, it makes me wonder just how slow you can actually go.

Tried to go black, green, blue after opening a Muldrotha but in hindsight I probably should've went black white.

I also went 1-3.

Opened two Muldrotha's but didn't really have any mana fixings so didn't feel confident running 3 colors.

Also opened a Teferi (three mythics in 6 packs wtf) so went white-blue.

Literally every game I played was close and I was within a turn of winning / losing, so it was fun at least.

I was worried about the colours so I ran extra lands, ended up flooded too often.

I also had a Helm of the Host and managed to get that onto a Muldrotha in one game so I just had free 6/6s every turn. Was great.
