because the old one purged.

Doing a blind marathon of the following Square PS1 games in order:

Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics

I made a bit of progress since the last topic purged; I got the Frost Breath (or whatever it is), made my way through Mt. Pyre, entered Fort Dragonia, and activated the four gemstones there. Taurusoid is probably my favorite boss in any Square RPG.

For the record, my current party is Serge, Kid, and Greco.

Crystal number 5-oh
The sun from the Teletubbies caught tetanus, apparently.
Kissy-wissy? What's tha-BAD TOUCH BAD TOUCH NO NO NO NO NO KILL IT WITH FIRE
That death animation was really fucking disturbing.
I think that's the first boss in an RPG to straight-up creep me out.
All right then, crystal number 5 down.

Going down leads to something I can't do right now. Let's try up.
Oh, we've come full circle. Still don't have Miki, though, which is disappointing.
Probably gonna switch out Greco for Razzly after this, Greco's doing fuck-all for damage.
...never mind, he just solo'd an enemy with his regular attacks.
I hate the spelling "daemon", and it only seems to come up in JRPGs. Any reason for this?
Oh, another recolor for the 6th crystal. Getting a bit lazy, aren't we? Can't blame them, though, with the sheer amount of bosses i this game.
...I stand corrected, what the fuck? Am I not remembering the opening of this game correctly?
Either way, boss down. Gonna go snatch up any collectibles I missed before I grab the crystal, though.

"Alphabat"
Got me to wince irl, localization team earned their keep on that one.
Oh yay, another Meteor Shower to add on to my other 6.
Is it just me or are these charm accessories not worth the equipment slot at all?
Okay, done with that. Let's actually collect the 6th crystal now. Time to ride the teleporter that isn't actually a teleporter.
I just now realized that those 6 bosses were based off of the color of the crystal they were guarding. I'm a fucking moron.
Gonna break off this post here just because I know something big is happening as soon as I ride the teleporter.

...when did those stairs appear below the teleporter? Wasn't there a chest there before?
Either way, big event time.
Yes, Serge murdered Kid, what else is new?
Oh, it's in this room. That's new.
Really regretting not saving before this, I expect this to be a tough boss fight.
Hmm, he's doing multiple attacks in quick succession, something no other enemy has done up to this point. Given that we're in the Chrono universe, could it be an older version of Serge who traveled back in time? That would give a lot of the comparisons between Viper and Serge by NPCs some weight to them.
Also, when did Kid move to the back slot of the party?
ngl the flip-flop is pretty dope
oof that's a good chunk of damage right there
GIVE HIM THE CLOTHESLINE FROM HELL GRECO
that actually finished him off lmao
Ooh, a dragoon gauntlet. That's pretty dope.
Omae wa mou shindeiru
Oh wow, we're just going in dry.
What's a GlideHo-JESUS FUCK THAT'S A LOT OF DAMAGE
This dude's doing 3/4 of my health from a regular attack wtf
shitshitshitshitshithealhealhealhealheal
I vaguely feel like Lynx could be Magus, but that's just because he has a scythe.
Damn, the field effect can change the damage dealt by over 100 points.
Let's finish him off with Luminaire, just to be fancy.
ngl these CG cutscenes are making the story really damn enjoyable
WHAT
WHAT
just gonna calm down for a minute and appreciate the fact that i have the same elements
anyway
WHAT
LUCCA WHAT
god damn that new portrait is scary
ngl this story actually has me on edge, which is pretty rare in RPGs
uh how do i reach that save point

...That waterfall is flowing backwards.
Harlequin? I mean, I guess that makes some amount of sense...
I get it, everything is about perspective, game.
Oh man, am I going to play through an M.C. Escher painting? I think this is the first time a game has ever made me say, "This is so cool" over and over again out loud while grinning like an idiot.
Not sure what the battle music on the overworld's about. It's good, though, so it gets a pass.
And we're back in the Hydra Swamp. Home World, if I'm not mistaken.
I am not mistaken. Gonna save real quick and take a break.

All right, I'm back in the game.
Let's go back to Arni Village to see what's changed...
This game is actually genius. It shows you how trivial it seems to be when you're not on the receiving end and then makes you experience it from the other side. It shows how people you think you know can change attitudes so quickly based solely on appearances. I fucking love this game.
Nice callback to Chrono Trigger with the Heckran Soup.
Wait, what happened to Radius? Are the two realities merging?
Listen, lady, you've been standing at that Record of Fate for at least a week straight at this point. If anyone doesn't have a right to use it, it's you.
They're even calling back on the tutorial fight! This fucking game.
Oh man, Radius is in my party? Fuck yeah.
"I'll take care of the Record of Fate while you're gone"
I mean, since nobody can access it with your standing in the way of it, I guess that technically counts as taking care of it.

This game is so damn good at subverting expectations. Here I thought Termina would be better than in Another World based on everything I've seen so far, but nope, it's under martial law.
That was implemented by me.
Whoops.
Porre's "state-of-the-art weaponry" that will prevent popular uprisings is a giant cannon inside of the city. Brilliant.
Recruited Van. Very nice scene, though I can't say I'm a fan of his stats. What use does he have in combat?
Strolling on over to the forest, gotta find a dad who ran away in pursuit of shrooms. I wish I could do that in real life.
Saved him from the ingame equivalent of tissue paper.
Harle can't hit anything, even with the same rates. Wonder why...
Let's return to Lisa's, shall we?
Aaaaaand nothing.

Think that'll be where I end it for the night, I've got to sleep.

Sir Norris? I didn't know Chuck was in this game.
Oh, he's a medieval Leon Kennedy. Even has a gun.
Gonna swap Harle out, she's inferior in every way that I care about to Norris.
I just found out that you can manage members not currently in your party. I'm stupid.
Ooh, a tour cruise ship! Are we recruiting someone, now?
Miki? Can I finally recruit you?
No, no I can't.
Oh, this is the ghost ship in Another World! Nice.
And Fargo isn't a fucking pirate this time.
Off to Marbule now.
...and now I have to go back to the cruise ship. Ugh.
Before that, though, I'm going to check out the El Nido triangle.
"Go in" u wot m8
okay we can all breathe underwater why the fuck not
I'm fighting schools of fish. And pufferfish that do almost half my health in one hit. Getting the FUCK out of dodge.
Oh, Fargo's a fish fucker. I don't judge. And only fish with German accents, apparently. They can also walk on their tails, for some reason?
Let me guess: The old man is the sage of Marbule.
Confirmed not even 10 seconds later.
And now we're going to gamble our ability to leave the ship in what is obviously a rigged system to maybe have the chance to talk to an old man.
As per usual, everything that has the appearance of being better in Home World is actually worse.
Oh, who would have guessed? We lost a rigged game?
Is this really happening? Is being turned into a cat actually going to be a plot point?
ngl this is hilarious
Who would have guessed that a compass could be rigged by a magnet?
Pfft, that's an adorable climbing animation.
To beat the character limit, they put "Ag47" instead of "silver". Pfft.
This foreshadowing is about as subtle as an 18-wheeler plowing into you at 100 miles per hour.
I imagine Sneff talking like the police officer who gets out of the car to take a piss at the beginning of Resident Evil 4.

Picked Total Chaos, Lagoonate, and Crossbones.
I hit the Beeba with Just4Kicks. It got knocked down, walked to its original position, and then died.
...and there's the kicker. Should have seen that coming.
Yep, I'm fucked. That's a bit unfair, in my opinion.
Barely survived the second battle, accidentally hit circle and went into the final one with my 3 weakest monsters. God fucking dammit.

Let's just kill the only person who could possibly grant us access to the Dead Sea, why not?
i didn't save shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit
that was legitimately terrifying
and we finally have us nikki
now where's miki, i really want to recruit her
That platform seems incredibly inefficient, not gonna lie.
Damn, is the game actually dropping frames?
Yep, the framerate of the text actually dropped. Clever of them to disguise it in a scene where absolutely nobody moves.
Switching Radius and Norris out for Irines and Janice.
Opened up the Dead Sea after not being able to convince Fargo or find Nikki. Let's-a-go.
oh please tell me i get to literally knock on death's door
Since when is the Masamune an evil sword?
Einlanzer sounds familiar for some reason, but I can't put my finger on why.
Huts... Ooh, the Hermit's Hut?
Nailed it.
Jesus, I think I know why Radius kept losing to Garai.
Yo, Razzly!
And she doesn't want to join my party, of course.
Now, the Isle of the Damned!
God, WillO'Wisps look so damn familiar It's on the tip of my tongue, does anyone know what I'm talking about? I want to say it's a Kirby enemy, but that feels wrong.
Oh, I totally didn't notice Janice was a rabbit girl beforehand. And she's also stupidly powerful.
No way, is Radius going to turn on us?
Well that could have been drawn out slightly longer...
Oh, let's fight a dead man instead.
This is still really damn cool, though.
We have a mermaid down, I repeat, mermaid down.
And a bunny girl down.
I'm not down yet, but Lynx will not stop missing.
And now I'm down.
RNG really fucking hated me that battle.

NG+ works incredible awesome on this game, because it has Continue+.
NG+ will let you replay from the start of the game with all of your items, elements(minus the special ones) and gears you collected intact. Continue+ did the same but with a saved normal game instead.
and this is where it get interesting, continue+ with the save file you have before the last boss and beat the game again, overwrite the clear game data and now you have 2x the items. repeat until necessary, remember not to overwrite the last boss save from 1st run since you need it to abuse this trick.

also the NG+ give you 2 neat Key Items. one for replacing Serge at the battle party, and the other one is to make the game run at 2x speed (except at loadings).

Is that shadow the logo for Final Fantasy 6? Also, I can walk on water now? Am I Jesus? For the record, we DO know that people actually sailed here before.
This monster reminds me so much of Johnny for some reason.
HOLY FUCK he hits hard.
And he's tanky as hell, this battle's dragging on.
Water Breath continues to look like a blowjob.
A blowjob that blew his mind so hard that he exploded.
How the hell does Irenes, a fucking mermaid, have the highest dodge chance in my entire party? And how does equipping kung-fu shoes, which she cannot wear, almost double it?
Is this just a ruined shopping mall? That's pretty damn cool. This sorta gives me the impression of 1999 A.D. in Chrono Trigger, despite how little of it was present in the game.
Did I mention how damn cool this game is?

Pity that one of the key items that doesn't carry over to a NG+ is the Mastermune. On my first completed playthrough I hadn't bothered to forge a Spectra Swallow and had sold off all my lesser swallows, so once I started the new game I had to go back to square one with Serge's weapons.

CC may have its flaws, but the Dead Sea is one of the coolest areas in gaming.

Damn, I've gone through 25 bosses already and I'm not even halfway through.
This game would really benefit from a graphical upgrade. Character models get super small on large screens.
Oh, finally a chance to use these trap elements for once.
LMAO one of these Tragediennes said "I like to suck" for a second because the game stuttered. Actually had me dying.
This entire place is visually breathtaking, though. Can't get enough of it.
What the fuck
Is that a gate?
"You'll get a full night's sleep in a few seconds."
But you're still hungry?
"But you're still hungry..."
Nailed it.
So I assume I'm in 2300 AD now?
...that ghost looks a lot like Crono.
And those ghosts look a lot like Lucca and Marle...
And here's where it ties in to Trigger? I'm assuming?
This game is making me ask so many questions.
Oh man, this music is so good.
And I thought I could get away with sealing everyone's elements, so of course it hits everyone but Miguel. Is he immune to it?
