FATALITY!

I was always the kid who imagined himself being in whatever I was watching and being able to do the biggest, coolest things the good guys (or even bad guys!) did. Finishing moves can tie into a characters personality, or they could be just plain awesome for awesomes sake. Either way, they're meant to deliver the hype. And since this is Board 8, and ranking things is in one way or another about 1/2 of this board's substantive topics... Yep.

"But Trdl, why did this take so long for you to do?" I hear you ask. And I reply: Have you ever seen any of the projects I try to do on this board? We're lucky I managed to do it at all. Praise be to the GMUN Bumper Bot.

Anyway, using the 62 beautiful nominations supplied by awesome people, I put them through a totally objective and not biased at all formula to determine which ones are best.

Here there be rules:

What is a finishing move?

An important question; so glad you asked! For our purposes, a move/attack qualifies as a finishing move like this:
-The move must be signature to a specific character or small group of characters
-The move does not necessarily need to be a OHKO, but it should be advertised (in story or in mechanics) as the biggest weapon or attack a character has in their arsenal.
-The move should not be something used very frequently and nonchalantly. Use your own judgement.
-The move is allowed to be something that changes the environment of the fight as opposed to being a direct damaging attack.
-If a character is in multiple games/movies/whatever and their finishing move changes in between, any of those finishers can be nominated separately.
-If the move is not a physical or magical attack but might still fit the description, go for it and well see how it fares.

What kinds of media apply?
Entries needed to have a video link to qualify. All moves are nominated based on the video and any context provided by the entrant or that I happened to know. If there's a really sweet iteration of a move and the entrant used a super lame one, the lame one stands. That was the only real requirement. Anime, video games, wrestling, whatever, its all good. In the write-up, I'll make sure to mention anything needed to make you, the audience, understand how cool or lame the move is.

How will Trdl grade these?
The following system applies, each scored out of 10:

-Aesthetics: How flashy is it? Is this something 10-year-old Trdl would want to pretend he could do in front of his nerd friends? This isn't necessarily flashy in a visual sense... but that doesn't hurt.
-Dominance: How much does it portray its users strength and skill? This isnt necessarily just about how much damage it does (otherwise Mortal Kombat would run amok) but how badass it makes its user seem.
-Damn: How intangibly cool is it overall? Is it the kind of thing I will watch and involuntarily exclaim, Daaaaaaaamn!?

In the event of an overall tie score, Damn is the tiebreaker. If thats still tied, I will make the decision independently.

Next post will have a list of entrants and their respective entries. Videos will be linked as the write-ups happen. Sit back and enjoy!

Grand Calamity Symphony has the potential to be pretty cool. However, it seems that optimized for an overleveled party, it's about as lame as possible. Knee. Stomp. Knee. Stomp. It looks like he might as well be slapping the enemy with a wet noodle. The camera angles and quality of old-school sprites do not do any favors. I got so bored I ended up playing a game of Hearthstone while I waited for it to finish. The one redeeming quality is that the knee strike is called "Booya." I'd forgotten about that.

And let's face it, that was redrocket's plan. He knew he was gunning for last place. Well, you got there, Rocket. A dubious honor, but an honor nonetheless, I guess. I'd like to make these writeups a little bigger, but there's just not much to say here. Blah.

I had to take a bit of liberty with this since Raka's original video doesn't seem to actually show off the move. I hope Raka's cool with it since the closest equivalent I could find in his video didn't name the ability at all.

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft. Not as much as Snake, but that's impossible to compete with. Which is why I can't stand this fucking awful character. Fate was cool when it was spinning actual legendary figures and making them badass (and sometimes sexy) in their own way. Now it's just churning out bastardizations of bit players and throwing shit on them randomly. "Abigail Williams, one of the first accusers in the Salem witch trials? Obviously she's tied to Cthulhu!!!" Bitch, please. Also, why is she almost butt-naked despite being like 12? Yes, I know the answer why, but for fuck's sake, Japan. At least this is the one character they're kinda justified in making look young, but put some damn clothes on her.

But we're not here to talk about shitty characters. After all, even shittier characters are much higher on the list. We're here to talk about their sweet moves. And this is... not sweet at all. Uninspired, really. A keyhole in someone's head is lame as hell, and for some reason bad CGI tentacles come out because lolcthulhu. The point of Cthulhu isn't the tentacles. It's about the foreboding, the tense atmosphere, the dread and inevitability. I get none of that here, especially since somehow they get pulled into the keyhole? How did that happen exactly? It's just a lazy editing trick in an attempt to look badass in a "muahahaha they're trapped in my head all along," but we don't even see the tentacles pull the dude back in there. It just... happens. Whatever. This had so much potential, and it managed to fuck up in almost every way. Still, at least there was a shred of effort put into the concept, which is why this manages to avoid last place.

They told me I could be anything, so I became a Beyblade.

I'll be honest, this was a pretty sweet concept, and they probably did the best they could given their technology and budget for this film. Shoot ALL the lasers! And kudos to them for the lasers not just bursting from the ship's every orifice. Making the gunner reminiscent of an old-school WW2 tail gun system was great too. But man, the CGI of the time and stilted writing just drag it down. I can't take those bad-guy ships seriously at all when their aim is even worse than a stormtrooper. Alex and Grig are literally sitting ducks, and the enemies just let themselves get blown up.

If this were fast-forwarded two decades with the increase in technological ability even on a shoestring, this could have been higher. Then again, this movie also probably would not have been made. It's a delicate rope to walk, but even though I'd like to, I can't get this any higher on my scale.

#62: Reverse Bear Trap

Nominator: TomNook (0/1 remaining)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXzTc-6ggn8" data-time="

Aesthetics: 3
Dominance: 4
Damn: 2

Total Score: 9/30

Unfortunately, I can't show the actual Reverse Bear Trap kill from one of the later movies because it's gory as fuck, and I don't feel like getting modded. Even in a topic with MK Fatalities, I don't think I can show it. Tom knows that this is a challenge and that this version, while much less expressive, is the most I think I can get away with. I apologize, Tom, because even though I'm not a Saw fan, this deserved a lot better.

Anyway, the concept here is pretty cool -- instead of crushing your head, it rips open. We only get to see it used on the mannequin, but it looks like a nasty thing to get caught up in. I dinged it on Dominance because in the end, Amanda gets out of it without injury, but looking back, I shouldn't have done that as harshly; if Jigsaw wanted it to kill her, it would have killed her. His "dominance" was forcing her to make a choice; the bear trap was just a catalyst for that. Still, the point is to rate the move, not the situation, since the move itself did not cause the situation. It was just a symptom of it. I hope that makes sense?

I'm not big on horror movies, but I see why the original Saw became such a hit. The tension is real, the traps elaborate, and the concepts kinda interesting. It's not Oscar-worthy or anything, but it's better than most of its competitors (and imitators). The rubric of this list probably did more of a disservice to this entry than it deserved, but c'est la vie.

#61: Spine Rip
Character: Sub-Zero

Nominator: GavsEvans123

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZfizyXK0CA" data-time="

Aesthetics: 2
Dominance: 4
Damn: 3

Final score: 9/30

I know, I know. It's a classic. One of the cream-of-the-crop finishers in old-school gaming. We wouldn't be where we are without the Spine Rip, and for that I respect it. I main Sub-Zero too because I'm a scrub so I adore the character and all he stands for.

But when you look at it objectively... man, the original has not aged well, and that's what Gavs told me to rank.

The recreation of it in MKX shows how much the simplicity of the move does right, but the limitations of the original hamper it so much. It's too sloppy to do much aesthetically, the "dominance" of the move doesn't translate that much anymore, and we've seen so much more in our time that this just isn't that big of a deal anymore. If a "retro" game were to come out with this kind of move and we didn't already have history attached to it, nobody would bat an eye. In fact, I'm sure many already have. That's the perspective I have to come at this with, which sucks, because I want to rank this much higher out of nostalgia. However, nostalgia is not part of my scoring.

Don't let the score fool you. I love this nomination. I know it was a joke, Johnbobb, but it was a damn good one.

For those of you who don't know, Scott Pilgrim is set in Toronto, Ontario. So of course it brings us the most Canadian finishing move that could ever exist. It's a joke, for sure, but it also tells you a lot about Scott at the end of the story. He's able to chill out with himself because he's learned to face himself and grow as a person throughout his journey. His battles against the "evil exes" were more about overcoming his own weaknesses than their strengths. When faced with a doppelganger, a lot of us would get unnerved or even irritated with ourselves after a few minutes. But Scott? Scott's become so comfortable in his own skin that he's just able to "shoot the shit" and make plans to hang out at a diner next week.

That's quite a bit of analysis for what John likely meant to be a throwaway nom, but I like this movie, and I like this scene a lot. In the comic this doesn't really exist since Nega Scott is a real thing. That doesn't matter though, since Scott prevails no matter what, even against himself.

And for those of you wondering why the "damn" is so high, I remember cracking up and muttering "Damn it" under my breath when I first saw it. It's still a Damn.

Sometimes, simplicity is elegant. Sometimes, it's just boring. This is a case of the latter.

I'm not really sure what makes this a "finisher" as opposed to just "a move." It doesn't feel like anything expressive or unique. It's not as simple as just a chokeslam or something, but I don't get anything from it. Honestly, I thought that was only the first part of the move, but then the video stopped. That's it. It's not quite Codebreaker levels of boring, and it definitely seems effective (hence the Dominance score). However, I would like the 90 seconds of my life back since I watched it 10 times, each time thinking, "There has to be something more that I'm not seeing, right?"

"...Right?"

What the fuck did I just watch.

I just... I don't know. Why did the good guys think this was an effective idea? How did the turtles all land on top of the bad guys to attack them? Why did everyone go into a panic at a moment's notice? How did this lead to ALL of the bad guys' stuff catching on fire? The absurdity of it is indescribable... but I actually like this kind of thing. There's no denying this is a "finishing move" at least. I've been bitten by a turtle before, and those things don't play around, even the little ones.

This falls into the same "God damn it" camp as the Scott Pilgrim nomination, but the presentation and ridiculousness of it won me over just a bit in other categories. Is there any airborne combat clip that Ride of the Valkyries doesn't make better? (No, no there isn't.) Still, I cannot legitimately put this any higher.

ANIMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Yeah, I rated this one on Aesthetics too high, but I can't change scores mid-rank. I can't be impressed with a finishing move when I can't even figure out what the hell happened. He just throws a bunch of lines on the screen and that's supposed to be his big badass moment? I thought that just meant I had to adjust the antennas on my TV.

BlahBluh is a total hit-or-miss when it comes to this stuff, and this is a grade-A miss. The only reason I have a decent dominance score for him is that he somehow turned the battlefield into a Warcraft-style hellscape afterward, which is pretty cool except I couldn't see how he did it. So yeah, he gamed the system, but I am unimpressed.

I've always felt the playmaker was possibly the least effective looking wrestling finish and have always hated it-- particularly because most of his moveset looks more effective as a finish, in particular the boot he did before it. But on the other hand I love MVP so it was the best combination for something like this. Represent both sides.

That being said I probably would've rated it above at least a couple of the things already listed so I won't call it a last place robbery either. (Abigail and Susano-- the latter of which ironically rated above it)

You spin me right round, baby, right round...

KOF 14 graphics are... unimpressive, we'll say. This in particular is super lazy animation and video editing. None of the hits really feel like they have an impact because they just zip her across the screen without any sign of collision besides hilariously bad selling from the opponent. I feel like I could achieve a similar effect in powerpoint with animation tools and a GIF of her spinning. That's an exaggeration, of course, but not as much of one as I wish it were.

I legitimately don't even know what limb she's striking him with. I assume it's a spinning kick, but for all I know she's smacking him with her bosom. Still, I feel like this could have been good. The details at the start and end with the mask are a strong opener and closer. The final kick actually feels like it has some good force behind it. While the graphics are bad, they aren't Last Starfighter bad. This had a lot of potential but fell flat.

I'll be honest -- I'm not sure why Wind of Destruction feels like such a dud. The graphics are pretty bad but that's kind of a product of the times. The move feels like a super generic JRPG finisher, but there are some others of those on here that are higher. I guess it just doesn't have any pizzazz. There's no real setup, and there's not much frame of reference. There isn't really a sign that this thing is dealing damage until the damage numbers pop onto the screen. For all I know, that vortex may well be made of laundry bleach. (Actually, that would probably be scarier!) Kinda similar to the previous one, there's that lack of believable "oomph" behind the blow(s).

It doesn't help that this dude's voice makes him sound like he's a mustache-twirl away from being snidely whiplash.

I'll be honest -- I would probably be bigger on this one if I hadn't seen Deadshot's Super Move from Injustice 2, which is better in pretty much every way. No individual thing in this move is cool except the sword kick... which could have been REALLY cool. My issue, and this might sound nitpicky, is that the sword is lodged in the enemy's chest... and then it isn't. It just vanishes. Not even in a puff of smoke. It's simply unacknowledged. That ruins the entire flow of what should have been a stuck landing.

And it also should have been the landing. You don't just kick a sword into someone's chest, then use generic uzi spam to complete the move. That distracts from the fact that you just kicked a sword out of midair into a dude's chest. That's metal as hell, and it should have been the signature at the end of the paper.

This move had one great idea, did it pretty well, then fucked up everything surrounding it. The transition between the sword throw and the kick should have been flashier, not just boring pew pew. The sword kick should have taken the stage. That sword also should have gotten back to Deathstroke somehow -- either by Deathstroke doing one last blow that retrieves the sword, or at the very least a visual effect popping the sword back to him. So many opportunities, Netherrealm, and so many missed. At least you got it right the second time around.

See how this could have worked and still been metal as all hell is if every bullet from the uzi spam somehow hit the sword and drove it deeper into his chest.

Oh my fucking god YES. This probably would've made top 15, minimum.

It's a beam all right. And it's often coming from a triangle. No false advertising here.

I have two specific complaints about this. First off -- why can't we usually see the beam? Toriyama, is it really that difficult to use yet another goddamn beam in your show but make it into a triangle? I have to dock points for "usually can't see the damn thing" again. Yeah, you can see it briefly in the later ones of that compilation, but it might as well just be "a beam" in those. The Cell one feels like it should be how the tri-beam actually works since it has the rapid-fire ability that feels signature to it... but they aren't going to show it to us. Wtf.

Now for the second complaint: It never. Ever. Works. I think there was exactly one time in DBZ where the tri-beam did a damn thing that would make it feel like a "finisher." I guess it smacked Cell down a bunch of times as he was trying to fly back up. Part of that is just because of how DBZ works; enemies in this show have obnoxious durability that humans aren't allowed to beat because it always has to be a Saiyan (or occasionally Namekian) to save the day. How am I supposed to score it high on Dominance when it's never really dominant? I'm giving it come brownie points because against reasonable foes, this would probably mess them up given how much environmental damage this can cause. But Tien never gets to fight reasonable foes. Because DBZ.

Bad animation really hurt this one because it could have been great. The beginning is cool! It friggin throws you into a phantom dimension, which is pretty badass, and the converging energy beam trope is totally fine. It even has some beam deflection before it envelops the enemy! That's good stuff right there!

...And then blah. That's it. No follow-through to throw the enemy back to the real world. No follow-through at all, really. The enemy is just sitting there derping and no-selling the entire thing. It ruins the whole effect for me! Now, there's a LOT of pokemon in a game, so I understand it's difficult to make new animations for every single one, but that doesn't do any favors for my immersion.
