Pfffffffffffftahahahahaahaha.

Yeah, this is Mortal Kombat all right. This is just so ridiculous that I don't even know what to say about it. Why is blowing up the world a smart course of action when you've already won the fight? How do 15 bombs have that effect? To which MK replies: Who gives a shit, just enjoy your silliness.

So I will. I can't rate this any higher though.

This would mean a lot more to me if I gave a shit about Mega Man. Sadly, I don't, so the nostalgia hit me with the force of a wet noodle. I'm pretty sure that was the main selling point, so it's a miss for me. Still, even though I don't care for the concept, the execution is pretty good. It's decently flashy; it has a clear beginning, middle, and end; and it looks like it really has an impact. It gets the job done. It's just not special.

Mortal Kombat X tried really hard to make itself relevant to the new generation of Millennial gamers. The only thing it could have done more was advertise itself with free avocado and make doggo meme jokes. (Actually, they might have done that in the story mode; I can't remember.) Still, it was refreshing to see a bunch of new characters that showed actual timeline progression since Netherrealm is making story focus a bigger deal.

One of the benefits of this paradigm shift is that you get fatalities like this.

This is just three gunshots, but the way it's sold at the end with the casual stroll up to the opponent and blowing the bubble is hilarious. It's a great integration of Cassie's parents: Sonya (who values the efficiency of taking down a target cleanly) and Johnny (who values being an asshole by humiliating his opponent and pandering to the audience). Clean concept, clean execution, funny overall. It definitely achieved what it was aiming for.

That being said... I can't give it too many kudos for being a great finisher objectively. When you break it down, it's seriously just three gunshots, and the gunshots themselves aren't any sweet display of skill or anything. Sorry Cassie, but your run ends here.

Usually, I'm not a big fan of obnoxiously long "wind-up" times in the middle of a fight, but here the flashiness makes up for it, and it's not too long. The animation shows its age a little bit, but the effects are pretty nice as the sword becomes engulfed in dark energy and the connection to the sky portal twists and writhes. The incantation is actually pretty nice too; often they're silly or just dumb, but here it works.

So why is this so low? Because I have no idea what the fuck it actually does.

It connects with the beam that the big demon shoots out, presumably overpowers it, there's an explosion, and then... nothing much has changed. There aren't any visible wounds on Demon McDemonface, he's just grunting in pain for some reason. No puncture wounds, no crushed limbs, not even any scuff marks or dark veins to show corrupting influence. Instead he just kinda stands there until he shows some class and applauds the good guys for taking him down. Then he petrifies and crumbles? I feel like that isn't the effect of Giga Slave as much as it's just the method by which Demon McDemonface happens to die. So... yeah, I can't rate it too high when I'm not totally sure what it did.

Ouch! I think I just cut myself on that edge.

If this were the trailer version, it would have scored a lot higher on Aesthetics since it actually looks scary as hell there, whereas Reaper in-game looks like a mediocre ballerina with a couple of big guns. The black mist surrounding him could be a bit darker or have more volume to make him more menacing, and he could have a bit more speed and motion blur to his twirling to give the effect of him shooting ALL the things. However, him chucking the empty guns away at the end if a nice touch. That's a good "landing" so to speak.

That being said... I can't deny its effectiveness. Snake found a good clip of it since he makes mincemeat out of the opposing team, and it really feels like they just got blown the hell out too. There's a good mental impact to go with each kill, and the way they scramble before they die reinforces Reaper's whole shtick. I just wish it looked cooler and had more flash to it. It's a good execution, but at no point did I even think "damn" to myself. Good ult in mediocre game. Next.

Forbidden spells are a dime a dozen. If something in a work of fiction is described as "forbidden," there is 99.998% chance that it will be used in that work of fiction, often multiple times.

In any case, the video didn't do a great job on selling it to me, because again, how exactly would that have destroyed the world? Assuming I have no other context (which I didn't).

#46: Dragon of the Darkness Flame
Character: Hiei

Nominator: AquaArcane (1/2 remaining)

Aesthetics: 5
Dominance: 6
Damn: 4

Total score: 15/30

So you know how I gave Giga Slave some leeway for the wind-up time? Yeah... Hiei's not getting the same treatment here. Get it together, dude. If the Chigan Eye really disliked disrespect, it would have hurried that summon up a bit.

That being said, I like this quite a bit more than Giga Slave if it actually took a reasonable amount of time. The effects on the dragon are pretty good, I like the banter (it almost made up for the windup), and its effectiveness is pretty remarkable. I don't really understand what that bit is with the darkness coming out of the water and breaking some rocks, though, so points off for that. It feels tacked on. Ironic, since if it weren't tacked on, I'd actually like this move more overall because it would be shorter!

Anyway, yeah, this is a move I really wish I could have rated higher. It feels like a finisher should feel. It acts like a finisher should act. It's sufficiently badass. But god, it's hard to take it seriously when that guy just didn't get the fuck out of the way. He had nearly two minutes to do literally anything but just stand there. The fox chick knew to GTFO, and she wasn't even the target.

"But that's how shonen anime work!" Yes, and that's why most shonen anime suck. I actually like YYH in most respects, but this was not its finest showing.

If characters routinely didn't respect talking as a free action, for instance, then it wouldn't make sense for everyone to continue attempting it. Plus it'd stop being as funny when they didn't respect it.

I guess it's not that close a comparison. I meant it in terms of when you subvert a trope that doesn't make practical sense, it makes an impact the first time, but if you keep subverting it enough then you just wonder why anyone's acting like it should hold true.

How would you feel about it trdl if, more often than not, a character did try that and there was some sort of force field around the character, just from the sheer power of it? That's happened a few times, one I'm thinking of is in DBZ, when Future Trunks tries to hit cell during his final transformation and is repelled by the sheer force of cell's power. Would you accept that, were it more commonplace, or would you think more of it as just a handwave to see the character's power that they're going to unleash?

Also isn't it possible that a character is too arrogant or scared to think it through properly? Zeru **** his pants as soon as he realized what was going on, I think it's perfectly plausible that a character is just not in the right state of mind to think "why don't you just hit him"

You know what I don't like a lot of the time? Attacks that just don't work. Like in DBZ, someone attacks Frieza and they think they got him but when the dust clears it turns out he's not even scratched because he has a bigger number. That's something you see a lot of in DBZ, or at least think of when you picture the cliches. I think by the Cell Saga they work on the formula so it doesn't happen to quite the same extent. It's fine if they throw up a barrier or something, or do something more tangible like withstanding punches, just not being naturally immune to giant energy beams from lower level fighters. The fakeout isn't even convincing. Nobody believes that a random Namekian just vaporized Frieza before Goku could get there.

I rationalize that like this: When piccolo is fighting android 20, he mentions how the z fighters use their ki to sharpen their strikes at the moment of impact to give them some extra punch. It stands to reason that fighters can also use this defensively, maybe not always creating a barrier like android 17, but almost wearing it like armor. So it looks like they're just immune for whatever reason but it's actually that their ki is so powerful they can easily block out the ki of their opponent's attack.

That's how I like to think of it anyway.

This one is something I give a grudging 15 to. I don't like it that much to be honest. The scaling is super weird, it's just a ball with no other real effects to it, and the effortless way that Frieza threw it out comes across as lame instead of a badass flaunting his power. The dub dialogue doesn't help.

That being said... dude did nuke a planet. That's impressive no matter how visually mediocre it is. It probably couldn't happen due to target audience age, but I would have liked to see the effects it had on people as opposed to "they get enveloped in light and presumably die during it."

The Damn factor is kinda iffy for me. Usually, planet busting is pretty nuts... but this is so inconsistent with the Frieza we actually deal with! And this happens presumably before he's "full power" and alabaster! If he could do that, why didn't he effortlessly crush everyone around him? A diehard DBZ fan could probably tell me, but I am not that dude.

The video title is correct! She's a goddamn magical girl.

I think we've all seen this kind of "finisher" 100 times in *insert animu-style game of your choice here* so usually I would be trashing this. However, I think I can consider the setup binding the monster in place as part of the move, and that's pretty cool. Put a leash on the beastie, pew, pew, THEN finish the damn thing off. It also gives a reason for the windup being reasonable, and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

The last point to note: I don't know if I'm interpreting this right, but the magic circles hovering above the monster's head seem to be collecting magical energy like a dam, so instead of a constant stream of magic it's a damn deluge right over its head. Good touch. C- for originality, but solid B+ for execution.

I have no idea what a Skrull is or why this one is super, and I really don't know why he's Gumby, but this certainly is a beatdown. A savage beatdown, if you will. The springy nature of this guy's anatomy gives more feeling of weight behind each of the rapid-fire punches, making it look more like a jackhammer than a hammer drill. That makes the smacks also feel more painful. Ouch.

The beatdown at the start is the drumroll, and I was expecting something really brutal to finish it off. Unfortunately, it just wasn't that satisfying to me; it felt like the weakest part of the move. It left me underwhelmed. I think a better way to do it (but still put the distance between the characters that gameplay wanted) would be for him to lift her off the ground, get that fire fist, but then punch her down to the ground AGAIN so she has to skid to the opposite wall, kicking up debris all the way.
