The realization that Yuna's other guardians have been keeping the truth from him all that time... Then you think back to all the stupid things Tidus had said up to that point and how Yuna smiled solemnly and went along with it, and the reason she had been chronicling her travels so devoutly... It's all so beautiful.

Holy shit Asura's Wrath HYPE. For the uninitiated, this is Power Trip: the Video Game. Everything and everyone in this game is just so absurdly busted in power level that it's great, even if there isn't all that much "gameplay" involved. I doubt we'll see another, but I'd love it if we did.

Unfortunately, this isn't the best way to show it off. There's a lot of good buildup to it! Dodging through space, ki-blasting fireballs and comets... pretty damn sweet. That's why it got this far. Because in the end, it's just one punch, and it's not a well-sold punch at that, even if he is essentially punching kinda-Indra-Brahma amalgam in the face. A lot of this is more due to presentation than the move itself -- we don't really get to see what happens beyond shattering the facade because the scene cuts into the next part of the fight, so it didn't actually finish the job as much as get an entry to which he could finish the job. Also, that fight had an end would have done far better. Same with the scene where he blows up the dude trying to poke the world... which I think is the first boss. Damn this game is great. Wish it had a better representative here.

Could anyone try installing the beta branch and tell me what Content Build ID it installs? Beta access code for the branch is "hathathathat"
You can see your build ID by right clicking the game in your library->properties->local files and it should show in the bottom.

For the life of me I can't get it to install a new test build and trying to see if it is something with my computer or with the build itself.

Man, the Magus Sisters look weird as hell. The bug motif does NOT work for me. It didn't factor into the score, but something about it just puts me off.

Anyway, this is another attack with a long intro, but unlike most of the other attacks, it's very explicit that the first thing they do is subdue the enemy while they set up. That lets me give it a pass. Still, the animations themselves are pretty darn generic and not flashy. Points for synchronization, though!

Synchronization is actually why the move seems so effective despite it not being that great visually. The move conveys just how well the sister work in tandem -- first to subdue, then to charge, then to fire. That's pretty cool. Containing the explosion within the triangular prism was a good touch too since it makes the generic explosion feel more relevant. Overall, not that great, but certainly not bad.

I wanted to like this so much more than I do. It has the markings of greatness. Hoisting your sword high. Random Japanese kanji accompanied by a skilled charge. Goddamn galactic explosions happening in the background. It should have been cool.

But that's where it fell flat for me. I like absurd, but I don't like complete nonsense, and that's how this felt. None of this makes any contextual sense, nor is it treated like a joke the way MK does some of their fatalities. Also, this game's art style does NOT do its finishers any favors. I can't take a grandiose speech and thrust too seriously when I have to remind myself I'm not playing a Lego game. The marks here show that in most cases, this should have worked. For me, it didn't this time.

This nomination was cool, even if it's not so much a "finishing move" as a "redirecting some other jackass's finishing move back at him." There isn't much for me to say except to admire how badass Kentaro is -- it's pretty amazing for a dude to be able to backlash someone's attempts at using his special style without any direct movement of his own.

Another entry into the "slash all across the screen" finishing moves, this one has a couple of distinct advantages aesthetically. First, the animation in the freeze frames looks nice and crisp. Second, the end of it where he slowly slides the sword back into its scabbard and shatters all the effects on the screen really reinforce that he's "shattering the illusion." It look pretty darn good, even if it is among the most generic-yet-fine family of finishers.

...Yes, that really is the name of the move. I couldn't find it by any other name.

I'm saying that the tone was changed. I mean Fist of the North star is suppose to be this badass show right? Why would you put a countdown clock sound effect in what would be an otherwise tense moment.

In the same way that in Wonder Woman, the tone was also weird and all over the place. You had a dramatic tale about this lady and a band of brothers fighting the good fight. And then you get a scene where 2 suppose-to-be-serious bad guys are laughing like a bunch of snively whiplashes after poisoning an entire room full of generals.

Watching this again, I probably should have ranked this higher. The build-up is strong, the hype is real, and all of that. Even though it's DBZ, the pacing is pretty good too since there's actually a reason we need three minutes to build up the blast. Everything just works solidly.

I guess the issue I have is that everything surrounding the move looks great, but in the end, it's another goddamn Kamehameha blast. The thing that made it still get this high up is the end where Goku treats the kamehameha energy like a skateboard and grinds over the "rails" of Kefla's own blasts. That was pretty sweet and something we (or at least I) hadn't seen before.

A lot of the entries in this contest were what I expected. This really wasn't one of them, so naturally it's from an anime.

To provide much-needed context of wtf is going on here, this is how Simoun explained it:

Basically the show is about a ship's weapon system that can only be powered by hardcore rock, of which Tanaka (and his band) was doing wonderfully at. They get them to perform in order to win a galactic war against some evil aliens.

After a few episodes, the aliens decided to play them at their own game by using the band's asshole keyboardist Watanabe and retrofitting him with 8 arms to be a band on his own so that he can match Black Heaven's sound. He does so successfully.

Dejected, Tanaka is reinvigorated on the 11th hour by his ex-gf who manages to bring him all his old fans (Tanaka was a washed up artist by the start of the series) and after an emotional moment, plays a unique song from his heart. This one is even more powerful and since Watanabe could not possibly copy or fathom it, is utterly destroyed in one hit.

Honestly it's a cool concept, and I recognize that a lot of you might think this was hype as fuck. I can't think of too many things that put me off, personally, I just don't feel it. Well, I guess it just feels anticlimactic. It could have been a little longer, there could have been a little more soul in it, there could have been a deflection of Watanabe's shot, or... I dunno. I just think it could have been more.

Remember what I said way back when about really shitty characters having decent scores? Here you go.

Kingdom Hearts is, simply put, cancer in game form. The gameplay is passable if simplistic, but the cameos are tortured, and the writing is a special kind of atrocious. Character concepts are bad and executions are worse. This is what happens when your executive board forces a group of writers to make a massive series out of a mediocre first game that didn't need a sequel. Yet so many people, including some of the people reading this, just keep eating this shit up.

Part of the reason? Squeenix clearly took most of their writing budget and threw it into the SFX and music instead, Michael Bay style. And you know what? It looks pretty good.

There. I said it. It looks pretty good. It's not great, but it's definitely solid. The beginning does a great job of giving the player that "oh SHIT" feeling, and it makes the laser-parry-spam afterward that much cooler. Or, at least it would if technical limitations allowed the lasers to actually be reflected/deflected instead of just ceasing to exist, and if the two good guys' animations could have been faster to match the increasing laser rate of fire.

As with all things Kingdom Hearts, there's a far better (if somewhat tangential) version of this concept (the fight between Ichigo and Byakuya in Bleach Season 2, right before that series went in the shitter), but credit where it's due. Begrudgingly.
