I think the worst stupidity about DARE is that it is entirely possible with the right resources to get off of drugs for life and never do them again. Yet they teach it falsely as this dead end you can never go back from. If you do drugs, you can get addicted, but recovery is also possible, sometimes without even it having ruined your life in the meantime... of course, unless someone decides to criminalize you for this disorder. I feel like someone needs to be going to police forces and teaching them about the medical model of addiction rather than police officers going to kids and preaching about how they will ruin them if they do drugs.

What did you guys call it in school?

So should they tell kids to go do meth or heroin or whatever and hope they don't get a disease or loose their teeth while living in the streets doing crime and whoring themselves to feed the habit until they decide to get help and undergo some really difficult rehab that rarely works the first time?

No.

Doing drugs is going to ruin your life. You can recover from it, get your life back on track but that doesn't mean that old life wasn't ruined. The problem you should be having with DARE is the focus they had on weed.

The problem with saying that, other than the fact that it is objectively wrong, is then kids who do try drugs and nothing happens, will think you are completely full of shit (and rightfully so) and keep doing them and then risk actually ruining their lives.

You've probably done a drug yourself within the last couple days. Refined sugar is a drug, we just don't call it that. Caffeine is a drug. It's legal because it keeps people productive. It never ruined your life. I also doubt it had anything to do with how you are apparently incapable of understanding that lying to children in an educational setting is wrong.

We didn't. While it apparently did exist while I was in elementary school, it apparently hadn't made it across the country to the East Coast by the time I was essentially too old for them to preach to.

It's always seemed like more of a 90's kid thing to me. My generation had Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign instead.

The other big "let's brainwash the kids" initiative pushed hard when I was in elementary school was RIF (Reading is Fundamental), but that wasn't drug-related.

I mean, I have to partially agree with both of you. There probably are better alternatives out there that still prevent seizures but also don't end with you getting fried on a semi-regular basis. On the other hand, there's no need to be that fired up about their drug use, medicinal or no.

There are side effects to every medication, especially ones involving brain chemistry. The medication I take is effective at controlling seizures so I don't wish to change it, however, cannabis helps me cope with the side effects, and enables me to regulate myself so as to minimize the potential for seizures since cannabinoids promote homeostasis.

So unlike your alcohol problem, yes, I do have a legitimate use for it, and yes, I do have a doctor's prescription for it.

Saying this drug is "good" while this drug is "bad" isn't much different from saying they are all bad. It contains no information other than your personal preferences. Explaining how each drug works, where to get help if you want to get off of drugs, what to do in the instance of an overdose, etc.... that's all useful information.
