It's now held to the bottom part by a single wire.

Screen still works, but WiFi does not for whatever reason.

Most laptops have the wifi antenna go around the screen. There's a good chance that wire got displaced then too.

I figured as much.

Is this something that could be repaired? Would Geek Squad handle it?

Can a wifi dongle be used?

I would imagine, but the screen is a sneeze away from falling off completely.

Also it's pretty hard to find a comfortable way to use a laptop in this condition.

The hinges have been giving me trouble for a while (grindy-clicky noises when opening, wobbly, lately difficult to hold position that isn't 180 degrees one way or the other), so I figured this was coming.

Probably would have been an easier fix sooner, but it went from annoying to catastrophic overnight.

I'd say most likely. Generally wifi cards on laptops that I've seen have little notches the wire goes into.

It's fairly impressive.

Hinges got fucked, from there integrity was pretty compromised.

If your hard drive is intact then you should be good from that standpoint.

Otherwise, perhaps a used laptop?

Everything is fine except the physical connection between screen part and keyboard part. Power cable still attached. WiFi connection is screwed.

Not sure if the touch screen aspect still works.

I'm pretty ignorant on the physical aspect of computers. Also every other aspect, but specifically that.

I don't understand. My son broke the hinge on his Chromebook, and my husband basically told him that NO ONE else ever breaks things like he does.

So how can yours be broken? OMG, are you my son?!

Yeah, I'm a little frustrated with my husband.

I could be.

I think it might be an issue with ASUS.

My last one from them had the screen part start splitting in half from the bottom.

I had this happen to an old laptop but fortunately I managed to put in some temporarily solutions to hold it together before it got any worse. Both hinges were 100% dead but the only wire I lost was the one attached to the power button. It was still functional but was not very good to use (couldn't close it, basically couldn't move it around, could see the back of the screen itself if you looked from the right angle) so even if you do manage to remedy this I recommend looking into a new computer maybe

I remember hitting the side of a door with a craptop right on the corner where both the hinge and charging slot is. First time I ever did it and it wasn't even a hard hit. Month later it's splitting open everytime I put the screen up and loose as fuck. Another month later shit just stops charging. Rest in piss craptop

It happened to my first laptop, as well. The hinges are completely broken, and the screen needs to be set against a solid vertical surface or else it will fall back completely.

Really? My son's CB is an Asus. Does that brand really have hinge issues?

It's possible to fix but chances are you're going to need to replace the case on the bottom and/or top half of the laptop. It depends on where the plastic broke (it usually happens on the bottom half). The hardest part is taking the whole laptop apart to replace it, which if you haven't done before can be quite a headache keeping track of the screws and such.

As others have said you may also need to replace the wifi antenna, which is just a cable that runs from the motherboard up to the top half of the case. You can usually find all this stuff on ebay.

As someone who's worked on a lot of laptops with similar problems it doesn't have as much to do with the brand as it does with the specific model. Some models were just poorly designed or didn't get enough QA testing, and it's fairly random. It is true though that if someone opens and closes it with too much force it can add extra stress and make it break faster. But yeah, some models are worse for it than others.

Assuming I didn't really know what I'm doing, would a computer repair place be able to do it?

I'd assume for about 200, maybe?

If you break your laptop often enough that it isn't time for a replacement anyway by the time you break it... you probably shouldn't get a laptop next time.

This is kind of a first for me.

The last one was pretty old by the time it started breaking.

Usually I'm pretty good with my stuff. Only ever broke one phone in 15 years, for example.
