A part of me wants to say Diddy Kong Racing but too much of my childhood memories are tied to Mario Kart 64 and I just can't vote against it. Well maybe I can but I don't feel like it. All three of these games are must plays, though.
You know what kart racer is almost as good as the three in this poll though not quite there? Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour for the PS1. It's faster than CTR and Diddy Kong Racing (and maybe even MK64) and the developers did a great job turning the theme park's attractions into fun race courses with alternate paths and the such. ... Of that list? Mario. However, my favorite 5th gen racer was Cruis'n USA, followed by Cruis'n World and Star Wars: Pod Racer (one of the few great things to come out of that movie >_>)

Mario Kart 64 was one of my group's regular multiplayer games back in those days. I think I've played a little bit of DK racing, but I don't think I ever played Crash team racing.

CTR. I think it holds up a lot better than the other 2 and is still better than most, if not all kart racers.
