I have to wonder, if apes never evolved, would parrots become the dominant intellectual species one day?

Birds can fly but they are incredibly fragile. Their bones are hollow meaning a good whack can take them out of the game, often times permanently.

Humans are pretty fragile too compared to most animals. The differentiating feature is intellect, which I could see birds obtaining given a few million more years uninterrupted.

What really made humans dominant, besides their intellect was:

1) opposable thumbs: you can now grab stuff, build things and create tools.

2) fine movement: There is a reason we're weaker: We're tuned for fine movements. We can paint a work of art, sculpt using clay or swing an axe to chop wood. A gorilla couldn't sharpen a sword even if he had the smarts to do so, his movements aren't that delicate. This is important because of tool building

3) language: language, written and oral are a way of passing knowledge from generation to generation. Every human born now has inherited a vast wealth of knowledge, so we can train new people in engineering, medicine, war, etc with schooling. A dolphin or bird as smart as Einstein would not carry on his civilization because they can't write a book or explain nuanced stuff such as E= MC2, there's only so much you can communicate with a bunch of sounds or sonar waves.

Sounds like they're actually really unintelligent.

If they were smart, they'd be scared of what's killing them.

To be fair, they have been under threat for some time, and the past few decades have had major changes in the perception of kea, including them being made a protected species instead of being treated like a pest.

Parrots are hella smart. Some can communicate at the level of a human child, including the ability to learn to read. (Not sure if it's published yet, but there's an upcoming peer-reviewed scientific article on this by one Jennifer Cunha to look out for.)

I attended this one lecture where the scientist spoke about teaching her pet parrot Alex to communicate and to do multiplication. She also talked about this one moment, when she was leaving the lab, Alex asked her if she would come back tomorrow. She said of course she would, but that night Alex passed away. The lecture has always left an impression to me since.

But they're so anti social and are indifferent at best towards each other. That would prob put a damper on progress.

That's true. I hadn't considered the social angle of it...

Nah, the sheep just stand there because they can't get them off.. It doesn't kill them. The birds leave once they are full.
I doubt all Kea do this, but there are at least certain flocks that have been seen doing it.
