Some small Fallout spoilers Vault 76 was one of the first vaults to open after the war. Also worth mentioning: Vault-Tec (the company that built all the vaults) used many of the vaults as human experimentation and research labs. Vault 76 was a "control" vault meaning no experiments were done with them.

I haven't seen any gameplay in the new trailer. I'm feeling a bit disappointed by the claim that the map is four times larger than Fallout 4 because it suggests to me that there will be many big, empty spaces that Bethesda expects the player to utilize through base building and possibly PVP. I've been rather off-put by the randomly generated "infinite replayability" filler that Bethesda embraces, so I am going to be rather pessimistic about their efforts to make a game that depends on quality emergent gameplay.

i can speculate the plot twist: the experiments was not done within the vault, but on what happened after it was opened. including the experiments on how to adapt in the new environment.

Yeah that definitely makes it seem like you're rebuilding vault 76 and likely recruiting more people to make it into a city/whatever

To be fair, nobody is aware of the Metal Gear Solid lore and setting. I'm pretty sure that the entire plot of every game in the series after Metal Gear 2 was written by Kojima while he was high.

Hi. I'm Jason Schreier, from Kotaku. I had forgotten how... passionate the Fallout community can get. After I reported on Fallout 4's existence in 2013, people here first spent two years calling me a liar, and then when it was confirmed, they just yelled at me for "spoiling the surprise." But hey, I'm also a big fan of the series, and in fact may or may not have just started replaying Fallout 4 on my PC in the wake of this week's news.

I've seen a lot of rage and confusion (and denial) on this subreddit so I just wanted to chime in to say a couple of things. One is that, after publishing my story, I heard from a few other sources (in addition to the three mentioned in the article) corroborating that Fallout 76 is an online game. If you're really still in denial, I guess you can wait until June 10, but hey, don't say I didn't tell you.

The second thing is that I'm very optimistic about this game. The buzz I'm hearing (both first- and second-hand) is that it's really cool, interesting, and just as story-focused as any other Bethesda Game Studios game. It might have multiplayer and base-building, but hey, it's still a Fallout game. I don't want to drive hype for a game I haven't seen or played, but I also don't want people to be so closed-minded that they spend the next nine days freaking out every day on Reddit because this game isn't going to be like the last three.

I mean, how many of you remember when hardcore Fallout fans flipped a shit because Bethesda was making a first-person shooter?

I think that in retrospect I shouldn't have tweeted that anyone expecting a traditional single-player Fallout will be "very disappointed" -- really, I should have said that they'll be very surprised. I wanted (and still want) to make sure people's expectations are calibrated accordingly.

Short version: Yes, Fallout 76 is going to be a multiplayer RPG. No, that's not automatically a bad thing. Just like all of you, I'm stoked to see the game on June 10, and I'm optimistic that it's going to be really cool.

i just think it's weird that you would be getting a Metal Gear Survive vibe from a Fallout trailer where every second is recognizably in the Fallout aesthetic. unless you aren't familiar enough with Fallout to recognize the particular imagery and tone that it always uses.

I wasn't necessarily talking about the visuals as I was what my prediction for the gameplay itself is.

The Enclave in FO2, at least, didn't use a Vault to survive the war, they used the Poseidon Oil Rig.

Speaking of FO2, there's actually a Vault in that game which had no experiment and opened ten years after the war. The result is Vault City. Due to their GECK, they have grass, trees, and clean water and the Vault technology means they have the best medical care in the wasteland. They are, however, horrifically xenophobic to outsiders and outright racist towards ghouls and mutants. You can live in the crappy courtyard of the city, protected by walls and laser turrets, but you can't enter the actual city and you're heavily taxed. If you really want to live in the city proper, you can become a servant. Which is absolutely not like being a slave. Slavery is forbidden in Vault City. Being a servant is totally different.
