Subsurface Circular for PC

I don't know if the ending was some sort of social commentary that flew over my head, but it came across as the unintentionally hilarious version of the SNL skit Doppelgangers.

I wish that the puzzle elements were more pronounced and it wasn't so linear, but it was a good time for the two or so hours that I spent with it.

Mega Man 11 (PS4)

Another very fun Mega Man game. Difficulty balance is weird, once you get the hang of the Double Gear system the platforming isn't that hard, and it's very easy to stock up on bolts and therefore lives/E-tanks. However, the first few levels when you don't have the parts yet can be pretty brutal. Wily's castle is actually pretty easy this time around due to the combination of these two elements, but enjoyable. Really liked the visuals, music was good too, if not incredibly memorable due to its style. Best stage select music though. I think this one ranks around the upper-middle for me in terms of classic Mega Man, certainly one of the better ones.

I'm sure I'll be playing this more often in the future. Still have to beat the X games from the second X Legacy Collection, but I'm dreading those a little. Never played X4-X8 before, I did beat the X5 mavericks already but X5's main gimmick and some of its design choices just baffle me, so I don't like it much, and it's going to get mostly worse from there from what I've gathered. X4 was fun though.

AER: Memories of Old for PC

This could vie for my most pleasant surprise of the year (I know it came out last year, but I'm talking about games that I have first played this year). It does have some glaring flaws. The footwork is Wind Waker levels of bad, and while the game overall does a good job at providing visual cues to point you in the right direction if you get lost, the lack of labels on the map and no map while inside a place can get frustrating in the labyrinthine temples, or whatever they are called.

That being said, I just loved the mix of exploration and flight. Combine it the excellent sound design, musical transitions, and minimalistic story that uses a combination of environmental and expositional story telling, and you have a very compelling game that never overstays its welcome.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole (PC)

Ehhh. I guess it's more impressive than the last game. I liked it. I liked that it was more difficult and there were more options for battling. The plot was also kinda better. But I dunno, the first game had this ridiculous premise stretched upon LARPing. The 2nd game tried to go beyond that but also tried to retain its LARP roots. But I like the nods it gave to the 1st game at least.

Ryuuki Heidan Danzarb (Super Famicom)

A neat little RPG with some cool mechanics like the ability to level up your shops and Auto-Battle in a gosh darn SNES RPG. Not the kind of game worth a second playthrough, but very enjoyable.

Energy Breaker (Super Famicom)

A really, really, really good strategy RPG by the Lufia people.

Just Breed (Famicom)

Another really cool strategy RPG. If you like Shining Force, you'll like this.
