Mirror's Edge Catalyst for XB1

While I definitely enjoyed it, I feel like the combat was a downgrade and the loading times kind of deterred me from experimenting with risky maneuvers.

I was disappointed with Catalyst

They screwed up the open world and there weren't enough levels that really showed off how truly exhilarating Mirror's Edge can be

That said, when it fired, it really fired.

I didn't mind the open world, but I would have liked it better if it was more of an open world playground. It was kind of rigid for what this kind of game should be. Sure there might be two paths to get to X location, but no matter which path you took, you would be locked into a specific set of maneuvers to proceed to your destination.

Sad you didn't like it as much as I did. I loved it. Combat felt like a massive improvement from the original IMO, because the original's combat was just about as sad as it got. This game felt like it was easier to actually use the environment to your advantage, although it still was clunky and not as good as it should've been. And I really enjoyed the story.

I suppose my issue with the combat is not the new mechanics but that the game emphasized it more and that combat encounters were more time-consuming.

I really didn't like the combat

Had moments of satisfying style but generally you just sort of ran around hitting them and running away. I actually liked the combat in the original more because it didn't sacrifice flow as often.

Golden Axe (Sega Master System)

This version of Golden Axe was kinda weird.

You play as Tarik (apparently this is another name for Ax Battler, I never knew this until I looked it up) but you can't choose Tyris Flare or Gilius Thunderhead most likely due to limitations. I always liked using Gilius followed by Tyris. I never really cared for Ax Battler at all. It's also only single player since the other two characters are not present.

Before you start the game, you have the choice of choosing which Magic you want: Earth, Fire or Thunder.
That's probably the only unique thing about this entire version. The novelty of seeing Ax Battler using Tyris' Fire Magic and Gilius' Thunder Magic.

The framerate was sorta choppy but the game was somewhat playable. It also only has 5 levels just like the Arcade original.

The ending screens has some nice art at least.

Yeah. You have an invisible alignment score which ranges from -100 to 100, and you need to get between -8 and 8 to be neutral. The neutral route also forces you to do almost all of the side quests.

I don't think that combat isn't well suited for the series either. Faith should either have to rely on some sort of stealth attack (not that I can figure out how that would work out to not mess with the flow of movement) or just run away from all enemy encounters.

Yeah, stealth or maybe even like using the enemies as obstacles, more than encounters - they cut off certain routes, require you to maybe use the environment against them, you dodge around them while running or maybe slide-attack them to take them down and keep running, or do jumping kicks to the head and keep running.

I think sections of the game where you slow down and stop moving forward are important, but not because you're in combat - it should be because you need to work out what gymnastic skill she needs to get to the next area. And then get into the fast-paced part. Combat shouldn't really be one of those obstructions.

I didn't know Neutral First was a thing in an SMT game. If you can do it, so can I, I suppose. As I understand it, Neutral Paths require you to fight both the chaos and order leader. That must be some tough grinding.

Anyways, I just beat Hob (PC) and man I wanna love this game but I just end up liking it a little. It's a shame Runic Games is dead. They really had something here. But the weird controls, random crashes, and abysmal interface (let's just say, do not drop this game for a week and come back to it) kind of make me want to say there are better games out there like this, except there aren't alot of em. Best I can describe it is like a mix between Ori and Hollow Knight.

I didn't even know this game existed, that's how shameful the developers were about this; no news, no trope page. For all intents it should have. I only found out because it was on a gaming quiz.

Wario Ware Gold (3DS)

Story mode, as expected, was very short. Less than 3 hours. That alone was not nearly worth the price of admission, but luckily this series has excellent replay value, so I'll be trying to squeeze some more out of it.

Very, very fun though. I love that it was fully voice-acted, I think that added a lot to the humor, and I enjoyed both the new and familiar characters. 13-Amp is a star.

As per owning the Mega Man X Legacy Collections...

Mega Man X
Already beaten before through emulation, but great to just do it on a tv with my controller.

Mega Man X2
Same thing.

Mega Man X3
Also same thing. I want to add that I struggled with the final boss and I had literally one last attempt to do it before time ran out and I'd have had to go and power off the PS4, and then under the pressure I actually did it so that was really nice (still almost messed up the final sequence but had enoigh health to survive that...)

Now finally moving on to the X games I've never played! Already beat Web Spider and Split Mushroom (those rotating staircases made my eyes bleed).

WWF Royal Rumble (Genesis)
Similar to the SNES version, this version has it's own set of exclusive wrestlers on the roster. It has Hulk Hogan, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The Model Rick Martel, Papa Shango, Irwin R. Schyster while the SNES version has Mr. Perfect, Tatanka, Ric Flair, Yokozuna, Ted Dibiase.

Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak (Game Boy Advance)

Replayed.
Fun adventure game and very cute. You play as Hamtaro and Bijou as you go around to fix up Hamster relationships.

Shinobi II: The Silent Fury (Game Gear)

Another replay. The last time I played this one was way back when it was released (1992).
This is, IMO, an overlooked game that deserves more attention. One of the best games on the Game Gear.

You play as Joe Musashi (the Red Ninja) and he has to rescue the Yellow, Blue, Pink and Green Ninjas as well as find the Crystals. It has some pretty good adventure elements. The other colored Ninja have their own special abilities unique to them and they will be used to find the Crystals that will allow you access to the final level. It also has a great soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

Mortal Kombat II (Game Gear)

Despite the limitations, this port is pretty impressive. The graphics translated really well. Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Reptile, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Scorpion, and Jax are in while Johnny Cage, Rayden, Kung Lao and Baraka were cut. They even managed to fit Kintaro in while he was notably absent in the Game Boy version.

Vanquish (PC)

Holy shit. Thank god this got a Steam release, and the retroactive recognition it deserves. To those unfamiliar, this game was made by Shinji Mikami when he was still in Platinum (he's in Tango now, who made Evil Within). Game is pretty badass, fighting things bigger than you and excellent shooting sequences. But it was way too short and ended on a cliffhanger. It was clear that a sequel was teased but I guess it never came to be. Oh well.
