Deemo: The Last Recital (Vita)

It's a good rhythm game, but some of the song unlocks are hard to spot (missed a few and had to look them up) and it takes a while later in the game to grow the tree with the limited amount of song unlocks near the end. I did like the story though, and I will go through the additional scenario later on.

428: Shibuya Scramble (PS4)

Platinum'd.

It's an amazing visual novel. The game uses live-action stills and some occasional video. It makes it very immersive with every scene having different pictures and not just a character with a background. I also really like the presentation of the text since the text is nice and big and it also knows how to be dramatic, like having text show up in the middle or slowly showing words one by one for when the moment is appropriate. You play as 5 different characters and they're all very likable. The "gameplay" of the game is just making choices but the choices are very important since the choices in one character's story can affect the others' and can give them bad endings, of which there are 85 of them, ranging from serious to comedic, which also can describe the tone of the game, since the characters have very different events going on. You also don't have to worry too much about wondering if a choice you made a long time ago affected someone's ending since endings are restricted to the choices you made in an in-game hour. You go through the game hour by hour (in-game, that is) and your goal is to make each hour end with "To be continued..." for every character until the end. Some stories will be blocked out during your reading of them causing you to go through another's story to find red text, which highlighting gives you the ability to jump to another person's story and cause you to progress a previously blocked story. One other little thing I like is that there's a cool little preview when you begin a new hour that shows stills and quotes you'll encounter in the new hour. The story's quite gripping. I won't spoil too much about it but it starts with a kidnapping case but ends up being about much more. There is also a good amount of post-game stuff for a visual novel, with 3 unlockable stories and 22 unlockable special episodes, which are nice short stories about the minor characters in the game. Highly recommend.

Alien vs. Predator (SNES)

The Shoulder Cannon practically wrecks everything in this beat em' up.

The Alien Queen has so much i-frames it's ridiculous to figure out exactly when you can damage her and it doesn't help that she has an infinite combo that drains your entire life bar.

Immortal: Unchained (PC)

I don't know how I steadied myself to finish this rather mediocre Souls clone, but here we go. It's Dark Souls With Guns. It's pretty bad. 5/10. The levels dragged on too much, the bosses were either pathetic or cheap. The sidequests were confusing. The gunplay was okay but very exploitable. There was also this Borderlands-esque randomness with the loot which was annoying. The game starts you with classes of your choice but really there's no reason to do anything else but sniper. What's the point of being a Souls with Guns if everything else teaches you to keep shooting till you're in melee range then whack the guy from behind.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime for PC

So I played the tutorial several months back. I thought that I could handle everything they threw at me. I was dead wrong. I played the first two constellations (I think that each world was named after one) on normal/standard difficulty, and struggled mightily with the bosses. With the second one, I had to change my strategy entirely. I normal took care of moving and shields while having my partner handle all weapons, but I ended up having to reverse roles in the end.

After that, I did the third constellation on easy and the final on beginner just to be safe. The levels leading up to the bosses are fine, but the difficulty spikes with the bosses are jarring to say the least. The game is great though. I just don't see myself rescuing everyone.

Finally went after playing this, got some pieces of the mask but after some deliberation decided against collecting the last two Infierno and the warping platforms one. I'll go back eventually, but just out of the mood to keep playing and chose to beat Calaca instead.

It was entertaining, nice value in side quests, it has its entertaining references, and... completing Tree Tops made me feel really good about myself.

The game is explicit about what happens with difficulty changes when you fiddle around with it. I know that they throw easier enemy types at you, but I forget what else.

The Sword of Hope (Game Boy)

This game reminded me of fusing Shadowgate with a dungeon crawler.

Juts like Shadowgate before it, there's a lot of puzzles that seem really cryptic unless you try everything on every screen. The battle system also reminded me of Dragon (Warrior) Quest. Sometimes the battles can be a little imbalanced and there are a few boss fights that require you to be at a certain level if you even want to stand a chance.

Cute and fun. Too bad nearly the only fail states are when the physics makes items fall out of bounds. Because that happened with a couple levels.

Zombi (Xbox One)

I was about to end this game on a high, being pretty down for it for the first couple of levels but slowly getting more invested in it and liking it. Then I get to the London escape. There's a hole in the floor in the tower I'm climbing. I stand on a piece of floor to get a better look. Oh, oops, that piece of floor you're standing on. Yeah, it's not actually floor, it's just a graphical glitch. Enjoy your fall damage and your bad ending!

Fuck this game and fuck the people who made it. Don't play it unless you like getting frustrated at things you have no control over. I got suckered out of beating a hard level TWICE because of the game FREEZING (AN XBOX ONE, A CONSOLE GAME FREEZING) and now I even get suckered out of a decent ending. And that's what it boils down to. For all the good it does with atmosphere and creating a feeling of tension, it is simply inexcusable to create a difficult game and then riddle it with bugs and porting issues. God I'm pissed off.

Fuck this game. Don't play it.

Dragonball Z: Buu's Fury(GBA)
My memory was perhaps too forgiving of this one, and by the end I was quite happy to be done with the series. It pretty faithfully adapts the plot, even including some movies. It has a charming sense of humor. But the combat and balance are all kinds of broken, with many bosses being unable to do anything about being punched against a wall, useless energy attacks (Just be SSJ all the time and punch things), and either making you near-invulnerable or incredibly fragile. I thought the weighted clothing was a source of imbalance, but story areas are frequently gated off with minimum levels for a character which I often needed to grind for, so there's really no avoiding it.

PONCHO for PC

I really liked the atmosphere, art style, and sound design. The gameplay, albeit simple, perfectly complements the aforementioned stuff with one glaring exception. This game has you jumping through three different planes (foreground, middle, and background). This central mechanic works out well with the vast majority of the levels since they are mostly horizontal.

Two levels though have one that is almost exclusively vertical and another whose final, long section is solely vertical. The designers did not take into account any changes would be necessary for such a shift, and the result is a plethora of easy chances to fall from as high as the top of the level to the bottom due to the lack of safety nets. I fucking hated those areas.
