If there's something that you don't want logged on your ISP's servers forever then you would use a VPN and all they'll see is the VPN IP instead of http://whaleporn.xxx/hot_whale_slut_blows_ass/index.html or whatever. People think it's just about masking illegal activities, but with all the hacks and info dumps lately it could come down to a matter of job security.
