I've seen more people talking about them lately and have looked into them them a little. I'm wondering if they are even necessary for me though. Is it just so you can dl torrents and region unlock streaming services?

Will it keep logins safe from criminals? I can't imagine it would since most of those are compromised through company hacks

Mainly for privacy reasons. If there's something that you don't want logged on your ISP's servers forever then you would use a VPN and all they'll see is the VPN IP instead of http://whaleporn.xxx/hot_whale_slut_blows_ass/index.html or whatever.

People think it's just about masking illegal activities, but with all the hacks and info dumps lately it could come down to a matter of job security. Even if it's not something illegal it could still land you in... ahem... hot water.

In most cases no.

Bu if the site you're logging into isn't secure then your login info could potentially be read in plain text if someone uses one of the many wifi hacks to see your wifi transmissions. The VPN would add a layer of security there. This is my understanding at least.

As for the login details stored on the site's servers, that comes down to how secure their servers are and whether it's encrypted or not.

Basically if you use wifi at a public place it's a good idea to use VPN

Ignore anyone who says it will prevent your ISP from throttling you. They can just throttle the VPN.

This was all helpful. Not sure if necessary for me, but $3/mo could be worth the extra "protection"

These (not necesserially the ultra-dodgy disgusting type of "illegal activity", it could be as simple as downloading abandonware if the person is paranoid enough).

As well as a third reason:

3) Faking your location, in order to access content that is legal but blocked in your country / state.

Plot twist: Someone takes that URL and fills it with its intended purpose.
