I thought B-K was more polished, had more interesting worlds and better bosses.

Be Tee Dubs, I haven't played them on anything other than the N64. I still own both games.

I like SM64 but yeah the BK games are way better. I'd love to have more 3D platforming collectathons of that quality.

Both are great, but BK is easily more polished. It also came out way later in the systems lifetime, when Mario 64 was a launch game. That's probably why Mario hasn't aged as well

Kazooie is sooooooo boring, probably because it's sooooooooo linear. I can go back and replay SM64 anytime but Kazooie is a chore to sit through.

Tooie is bomb though.

I played it recently. I dont remember it being too linear. It may be a little more linear than SM64. But only a little. The way you pick levels and stuff is very similar. Though, I did think Tooie was less linear than both...

Wow, I didn't know I would actually have people agree with me on this. I was worried I'd get flamed and yelled at lol. To be fair to Mario 64 though, it is 2 years older so that is kinda why it looks like garbage today. Mario shouldn't look like a bunch of triangles in heat.

Not even. Grunty's tower is just a straight climb, one level after another, whereas Peach's castle has open sections and lets you choose which levels to do in each area. Then there's some levels actually being somewhat hidden making their discovery pretty fun, then levels where how you enter has an effect on the level itself.

Then there's the actual levels in Kazooie that are linear. The placement of notes and stuff dictates the path you walk pretty heavily, while Mario's levels feel like actual sandboxes.

I liked BK a lot but I enjoy SM64 more but that's probably because I'm more into exploration and open world kinda stuff and like the other guy said BK is fairly linear. I dont think SM64 has aged as poorly as everyone says but that could be nostalgia goggles

In my opinion, SM64 is a good game but BK and BT are better.
I have both games on 64 and on Xbox 360. Love them both so much. Not that I hate SM64 in any way though.
Nuts & Bolts is a good game as well if you like the characters and have a creative mind.

Idk. The reason insaybtheyre similar is because you collect something(stars/jiggies) that will let you open the next level. And if you collect enough, I think you should even be able to skip some. I know you could pass be certain levels in Tooie, though. But I think you could, too. The notes in the level did make certain ones pretty linear, though...

Yeah, I've always preferred BK.

Also, I think Super Mario 64 looks like total shit, not just in the way most N64 games do. I can't really even describe it, but it's like the graphics are... too cartoony? They aren't really that cartoony, but they fail at realism, the textures are too bland and there are too many sharp contrasts between areas. It looks like an early N64 tech demo, not the first full-fledged game. Plus the levels are kind of just floating in space and they didn't really even try to hide it with clever boundaries or backgrounds.

I don't know if my point about the graphics made sense so here are some examples:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/n64/196694-banjo-kazooie/images/211

Look at how much more the BK path fades into the grass compared to Mario. The grass texture is also more detailed, and DARKER. What the fuck kind of grass is the color of that Mario 64 grass

it was the first game in uncharted territory for nintendo, so yeah it was flawed as hell. mario's aesthetic has never been anywhere near realistic until very recently though so complaining about it looking cartoony is just weird.

Super Mario 64 was pretty linear in a lot of areas. Especially the Bowser levels, but a lot of the regular levels, like Tall Tall Mountain and Tick Tock Clock, were pretty linear, too.

To be fair, it pretty much was an early tech demo. Nintendo was very much working in uncharted territory with SM64, so it's to be expected that they kept things as simple as possible when putting together the game (so as to not get bogged down by trying to figure out more nuanced aesthetics at the expense of having a good game). Similarly, MK64's "3D" character models are just 8 2D images stuck together, which is leagues behind some later things that came out of the system.

It's just amazing to me how un-advanced the graphics are, even for N64. There's a noticeable gap even just comparing it to stuff from two years later on the same system. Not a lot of consoles are like that... oh wait, NES maybe.

Also complaining that one or the other is "linear" is weird to me. You just wander around and collect stuff. Neither one is really that linear, but neither is that complicated either. I wanna say that Kazooie has slightly bigger levels. Mario 64 has more "tricks" to the castle but let's be realistic, those might have been interesting as a kid, but I kind of doubt you'd have to do much work to find where to go next if you were playing it for the first time now.

no u

And seriously, those are style choices and, as a result, SM64 still looks pretty damn neat.

I like Banjo Kazooie more the Mario 64

But still think Mario 64 is one of the best collect-a-thon platformers to ever come out.
