Apparently, I have to call the night before and will be instructed on what to do and some times they even tell you that you don't have to show up, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Why would you hope this on me? I really don't want to go! For reference, I live in Flint, Michigan and that's where the court is. So if I don't have to be the juror on some heinous rape or murder I might get raped or murdered while walking into the courthouse.

My bf didn't go to his and nothing happened. He was out of town for a while for work. Didn't even know he had it until too late... Mine got sent to the wrong house (my mom's house in another state, because that was probably the last address they had before I went into the military). She explained I wasn't in the state. Then I got one here, but I had left to go home for a while, so I ended up not being able to go to mine...

I don't think I would have minded if it was an interesting case. But it probably wouldn't be. Plus, I don't have any time to do it. I have to work to make enough money to live. So, I'm kind of glad I didn't have to go. I was on paid leave back home...

Lawyers typically aren't allowed to sit on juries since they're believed to bring in biases.

I meant that the task of a jury in the US, is part of the judge's job here. A person who has at least been studying for and has 10 years of experience in the field of law trials, before even being allowed to make their first legal verdict.

1) Trial by judge *is* an option, should the defendant want it.

2) The whole reason for trial by jury is because of a long history of biased and outright corrupt judges. Trial by jury is a far fairer system and less prone to shenanigans.

It does, particularly in cases of morality where the jury can say guilty but shouldn't be punished.

If you a student, you can send them a letter on the back of your jury duty summons (or w/e) and tell them that you're a student and can't miss school (at least in my state you can).

I did that once

6-12 people with no stake in the proceedings are automatically less likely to be corrupt. You have to be pretty bad with sense not to see that >_> And the 12 laypeople work to the defendant's advantage, ensuring that the innocent are less likely to wind up in prison; likewise, the 6+ are more likely to render an impartial verdict in civil cases.

My BF and I both have full time jobs. And both got it within months of each other. That being said, I think they've been wanting to give me jury duty for a while. They couldn't before because I was active duty military. Now they can because I switch to reserves. They sent it to my original address in a different state. Once my mom called to tell them I wasn't there, they sent it to my new address in a different state. They really wanted to get me to do it for some reason...

I heard it's not much, though. Like a lot less or something. Which would suck if you need all the money you're making. It can cause problems...

In California it's a whopping $15 a day. Good enough for lunch and change really..

Hell, they know it's so pathetic that they urge you to donate it.
