Eh, I don't see boycotting Facebook as helpful to that. I see avoiding your news feed as actively helpful. If you can, keep to private groups. I barely ever view my news feed and I'm fine.

Twitter was the only social network I was using but it got toxic earlier this year and I've laid low ever since. I've unfollowed many people for vitriolic posts this year. Even blocked some that were worse than that. But it's becoming too much work, sadly...

Oh yeah I would boycott chik-fil-a and/or hobby lobby but I don't go to either place even before ethics/morals get involved. So uh lol. I do try to discourage friends/family from going to those places though.

I do actively choose not-Papa Johns for my pizza when I do choose, but I don't try to force that on others (often it's just a matter of convenience) so I won't really call that a boycott.

To put that in other terms, amazon uses their net revenue to do things like buy Whole Foods, issue company stock, or pay down corporate debt. So at the end of the year they haven't actually made any money.

edit: I should add that we are taking about federal corporate income tax. They've been paying state sales tax for a while now

I guess that's better than the internet would lead you to believe (shocker) but it still seems pretty lousy. Growing bigger and more diversified all the time and paying no corporate income tax in the process. I get that's how the system is set up but its just kind of scary.

I guess it explains how Amazon has grown so rapidly. They don't want to be "profitable" so they don't pay taxes, instead going for expansion.

I can definitely see the argument for changing the tax code so Amazon has to pay federal taxes. Personally, I wish Amazon would give some more of its profit to its employees. I'm not talking about Bezos, I'm talking about the people in their warehouses, their drivers, and the thousands of others that make it all work. Not just in terms of pay either, but also things that involve better treatment.

Sadly though, that's just not the American way. In fact, I saw an article a few months back saying that some Amazon workers in Europe feel that Amazon's standards, and American standards by extension, are more in line with the industrial revolution than today.

Well, it's not like nobody pays taxes. The employees who work there (including highly paid executives) pay taxes. The shareholders should be paying taxes on their capital gains. Amazon still has to pay taxes on all sorts of things such as fuel or tariffs.

And the money has to be going somewhere. When they purchase capital, the assumption is the vendor is paying taxes on the profit from the sale.

Apple purely because their shit has been overpriced compared to the alternatives of some specification simply because of the Apple name. I don't think I've ever owned an Apple produce because of this. If they charged the same rates as everyone else for the same specification I'd have no problem with them.

Android is the shittiest thing in the world to develop for. I've gone completely Apple because of it.

I don't technically boycott Google because of it, but I'll never buy an Android phone/tablet

First thing I learned was iOS/Swift, actually.

iOS is strict as shit, but you know it's going to work when you do it right.

Android has a lot more freedom, but it's a crap shoot if it's actually going to work as intended without jumping through a lot of hoops that literally make no sense to be there

If you're going straight up one vs. the other, I could see arguments for both

When you get into something like React Native, however, Android completely shits the bed.

That said, I should be fair. It's not completely Android's fault. Sometimes it's the particular phone.

Samsung in particular is pretty shitty to deal with. Latest example I can think of is that later Galaxy models disable third party push notifications without the user's consent in order to extend battery life under certain conditions, even for stuff like Gmail, to the point where people have developed apps just to keep you receiving push notifications correctly because it can screw 'em up and make you stop getting them all together.

I don't develop for Android but just based on my interactions with phone brands and mobile gaming I would expect this is the case more often than not. You get some people with phones way above spec unable to play games, and you get some who have rocks who can run games fine. That's why I'll never buy a Samsung phone they seem to be the most fussy by far.

Well, yeah. I could see that being a major headache if you're doing everything by yourself and haven't gotten it down

I should have been clear that I work for a company that develops production apps for businesses, schools, radio stations, etc, so you've got a team. Designer, developer, QA, dev ops, etc, and so you typically get a developer or two per project that handles only the actual development process, and so when you're one person churning out two native apps on a deadline, or trying to write just one codebase with React Native, iOS is your best friend whereas Android will randomly decide to kick you in the nuts.

I could see iOS's security bullshit and provisioning potentially outweighing that if you do it all yourself, granted our guy basically has it down to a science so I have a different perspective. I mainly just have to be concerned with knowing that my code is written well and functions as intended, and with iOS you know that's going to be the case on pretty much any device they use, which is a huge perk.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I boycott part of a chain of restaurants in a certain area.

I can't boycott a certain company, but I can boycott the CEO's other businesses that I might otherwise visit. I do that instead. The reasons I am boycotting these companies is something I technically cannot discuss due to legal agreements.

As someone who used to work for Amazon, unless it's changed in the last three years, it wasn't as bad for me as Zachnorn described. Of course, a lot of it depends on which department you work in. There are certain departments I'd never want to work in if I were to go back, but I kinda enjoyed working where I was.

I imagine I mostly hear the bad stuff because that's what the news want to report on. That said, I have heard some bad things from a friend, though not as bad as I described (a lot depends on the managers of a particular facility). I'm not at liberty to say what he told me though, since I don't want it to go back to him somehow.

Well, some of the stuff you said is true. Break rooms and restrooms tend to be far away from where you're working, so a decent chunk of your break time is spent just walking there and back. You do have to walk through metal detectors whenever you leave the working area, but it's understandable because they sell some pretty expensive stuff and there's usually a "fast lane" if you don't need to have anything checked. A lot of people freaked out about trying to meet the rate expectations every day, but I never really felt like they were unattainable. In the three years I worked there, I think they may have come to talk to me about my production once.

What bothers me about this is that I've heard this isn't considered work time. I believe that any time you're held up by employer policies, you should get paid for that time. I remember a lawsuit that was talking about this, saying the lines were slow because Amazon (or a contractor) had no incentive to make it faster since employees aside from security weren't being paid anyway.

It depends on when you're going through it. The two 15-minute break times are paid time. The 30-minute lunch break is unpaid.

also there are a few break rooms that don't require you to go through the metal detectors, at least at the facility I worked at

I don't precisely boycott Amazon, but I do avoid it because they're putting so many companies out of business, including pretty much the entire book-selling industry. It's kinda sad when I feel like I have to shop at Barnes and Noble just to support them, let alone my one local bookstore that still exists within a 30 mile radius.
