We were in Target and he accidentally dropped a comforter set. While he bent over to pick it up, he casually said, "aw fuck", do to his back being strained. A woman walked past and said, "excuse me, there's children around you."

He then said, "fuck you and your ugly ass children." The husband got involved, long story short, it escalated and we got kicked out of the store, was my friend in the wrong?

I'd say no, primarily because it was an offhand comment and the woman should have minded her own business, there's no need to confront the individual about their language, just tell your child that they're not supposed to use that kind of language. Seems like she wanted to just argue.

However, the remark, as funny as it may be, is kind of mean lol.

His response was a little extreme but the woman should've just kept her mouth shut. What exactly was she expecting? He can't take the word back. It's out there, your kids heard it, suck it up and move on. You're at a Target. If the price tag on some of their stuff doesn't make you say "fuck" out loud, you're not paying attention.

Yeah that woman should've just mind her own business.
If I was in the same situation as the woman, I wouldn't have made any fuzz about it and just move on and forget all about it.
So what if a child happens to hear a bad word? It will certainly not be the last time they'll ever hear something like that anyway.

Like, honestly. If you're that worried about your child being affected, just let him know, that sort of language isn't acceptable. She was literally looking for a reason to argue.

Sure she was. She absolutely has the right to comment on bad behaviour if she sees it; it's not like she tried to punch him or anything.

You can't even argue that doing so is bad manners, because the TC's friend was the one who displayed bad manners in the first place by swearing in a public place.

If you disagree, I invite you to go into the nearest department store, head over to the deepest concentration of customers and staff and start loudly swearing, then watch what happens.

How is bending over...straining your back and then saying "aw fuck", bad behavior? Seems pretty normal to me. She was literally trying to police his language.

His response is bad, the initial argument is entirely her fault.

As mentioned above, it's generally considered bad manners to swear around kids. If you don't understand the problem, I'll repeat my challenge. Go head over to a playground or some other place where there's lots of kids and their parents present, start swearing loudly and see how long it takes before someone comes over to have a friendly chat with you about it.

InhumaneRaider posted...

All she did was - rather politely, I might add - mention that there were kids present. She didn't even say anything like "watch your language", or something similar. And that's apparently justification for TC's friend to swear at her and call her kids ugly?

Fuck me, have we really reached that point as a society where making a polite request to someone is now considered an act of war?

She had the right, just as he had the right to swear.

Two wrongs don't make a right, she had no place challenging a stranger on a rogue word, she interfered because she's thinks she can mother everyone just because she has kids. She can't, she can fuck off.

If you really insist, I'm headed past a supermarket later, I could perhaps film doing exactly what he did and the lack of comments following?

I'm failing to see how these two sentences line up.

The first sentence states that they both had equal rights to their actions. Which is true.

But the second sentence implies that he was perfectly in the clear for swearing in front of some kids, but she was wrong for (politely) taking issue with it. Seriously, what the fuck.

If you act like an asshole, expect people to take exception to that, and them taking you to task for it does not make you any less of an asshole.

So basically you're saying that A is allowed to say something that B doesn't want to hear, but B isn't allowed to say something that A doesn't want to hear.

Go back through that slowly... you sure you don't see any logical inconsistencies in there somewhere? Not even a teeny tiny one?

Right, "stand up for yourself" and "don't swear in public like a troglodyte" are horrible lessons to teach kids. Goodness knows I want my kids to know that if they behave badly everyone will give them wide berth and not raise a whisper of objection.

Random aside, but you're not one of those people who thinks the kids of this generation are being too spoiled and mollycoddled, are you?

Also, apparently "be nice to people" and "make the world a better place" are SJW things now. Damn this PC culture, amirite? Everyone should do their best to make people miserable and tell it like it is-

Wait, isn't that exactly what the woman did here? And it's the anti-SJW crowd who's always complaining about not being able to say what they want whenever they want?

This. It's your job as a parent to teach your children proper behavior, not police other adults who are around your children. If an adult around your children does something you think is inappropriate it's a teaching moment for you to tell your kids that isn't the appropriate thing to do and why so they learn.

It does annoy me when moms try to police language. Especially when their tone of voice is so self absorbed and superior. I may tell one of them that it's none of their business and I'll say what I want... But I don't think going from zero to ten is a good approach.

And continuing to fight with them until you get tossed out? Come on. Sometimes you just have to walk away. And if they won't leave you alone, then they're in the wrong.

Maybe she should have just ignored him. But that doesn't even matter. All she said was "excuse me, there are children around you" his reaction was to tell her to fuck off and insult her kids. That's how trashy people behave. Seriously low class. Anyone that feels his response was appropriate falls into that same category.
