I find it cute that developers use achievements to track how people are playing their game.

That's why so many games kick one in near the beginning. They want to figure out who actually plays the game, rather than tracking "copies shipped".

Nintendo behind with the times?! Say it ain't so!

Good achievements are fine but most of them are just "play the damn game".

Achievements are just dopamine exploitation now

That's why you get achievements for doing all the basic things in a game - in fact you get achievements now just by finishing the main story.

That's dopamine exploitation.

With trophies on PSN, you get money for your efforts at least so people can stop saying it's a waste of time and effort. I'm sure Xbox has a similar system in place with achievements but I'm not sure.

I don't think I've ever trophy/achievement hunted for anything in any game, apart from the achievements in WoW that actually reward you with something (a title, a mount etc)

Trophy/achievement hunting for the sake of it? fuck that

That's how trophies/achievements have always been. You have the basic story ones, maybe some difficulty ones, maybe speed run ones, etc.

The fact is some people care about them and some done. No need for one side to bash the other.

I disagree
Maybe it was always like this, you know, but I don't think they were doing it on purpose

NOW, it's deliberate. They're just trying to hijack your dopamine response so you can get addicted to playing games.

Trophies/Achievements have always been about enticement to play the game. Either to finish the main story or play in different ways. It's no different than 10+ years ago when it was introduced.

"they only have achievements in the game because they'll make you feel good when you play the game"

Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Literally that's what games are for, to provide pleasure or a sense of accomplishment. Do you guys think that spices in foods are just a marketing tool to get you to eat more food?

there's a difference between having a medium through which i can feel good
and having the medium MAKE me feel good

a good game probably stimulates ur dopamine response well
but a hollow game with 500+ achievements given every 15 mins will literally trigger the same response in people
it's why Overwatch doesn't announce kills - so everyone can feel like they accomplished something

But that's why it's okay to bash games with that many achievements. Achievements, when done right, are really good tools for players and developers to keep track of things and also provide a new challenges that they may not have thought of. as long as they don't overdo the achievements I literally see no disadvantages to having them

i can appreciate that aspect of them

it's just unfortunate so many devs will do the "hollow game with 500 achievements" more often these days

Yes. That's why there's excess salt, sugar, caffeine etc in our food. So you eat and buy more.

Why is the money for trophies thing a U.S thing? We don't get shit here.

Achievements kind of ruined gaming for me personally. I don't know what it is, but I typically don't feel motivated to play a game to its potential (like fully explore every facet of the content) without them. If the game really grabs my attention then I will, but that's rare.

Even going back and playing some old games that I loved where I would always try to find all the secrets, it doesn't feel rewarding now. Which sucks because it should be about immersing yourself in the experience, not actively trying to achieve pointless side goals.

Maybe part of it comes down to knowing what "secrets" are actually there vs wasting time in an area.

Maybe at the start, but trophies are imo a tad bit more satisfying because of platinum trophies. On Xbox, you can't tell how many games someone has 100%'d.

i ignore achievements in games. i know people who will "work" on getting a platinum or 100% in a game for the achievements. which is kinda sad tbqh since most of the time theyre not even having fun, they just feel the need to complete them for the score and bragging rights.

if a game is fun, ill play it. if a game is not fun, i wont play it. simple as that.

That's projecting. Because I go for trophies, but if it's not fun, I'm not going to force myself to plat a game.
