I would have happily voted for Bernie the last time. But then the DNC pooped on him.

Now I feel like he's too poisoned to be the next candidate. Too many people on the right think he's an insane communist and too many people on the left blame him for Trump's win.

Never again Hillary. I like Bernie, but he's too old for a first term run now.
I guess Elizabeth Warren. I think she's better in congress or as head of a department than as president, though. Unfortunately only certain personality types seem to be able to cut it in a presidential election, and while she's given fiery rebukes at times, she's just too soft spoken and nice to take on Trump.

Michele Obama and Oprah and basically joke answers.

Joe Biden wouldn't be terrible, but I'm not particularly interested in him running.

PiOverlord posted...
Tulsi Gabbard.

Heh. My dream ticket in 2016 would've been Sanders/Gabbard. She covers a lot of his weaknesses, especially foreign policy, and was brave enough to anger the party elite and drop her cushy post in DNC out of disgust for their favoritism, plus she's respected by Republicans, too. Sanders would've been president for one term, then 2020 and 2024 she would run for president for 2 terms.
Without the 4 years at the VP level, I'm not sure she would do as well given her age and inexperience.

Of course, trump is president, so all of these concerns about lack of experience seem quaint...

Really, none of the above. Possibly Bernie, he would have won this past time, but he's getting to be in his 80s, and I think a lot of people are skeptical of the bigger government and higher taxes. I'd vote for him over Trump, same couldn't be said for Hillary.

Hillary.... if you want to lose even worse this time just go ahead and nominate her again.

Warren is kind of a joke. She appeals to the base but Trump would rip her apart in the debates.

Michelle and Oprah aren't qualified.

Lastly... Joe Biden. How do Democrats just completely ignore his blatant penchant for groping and sniffing women and children? There's tons of photo and video evidence. He's a creep. He's quite likely a pedo. But hey people make memes where he's a funny guy so who cares if he's actually interested in diddling.

Last time around barely anyone knew who he was, by the end of the race his popularity exploded. If he runs again I don't think there's anything the DNC can do to keep him from winning.

I don't think the most popular politician in the US is going to lose to the least popular president in US history, despite how a lot of these people will deny the statistics.

If he runs, he might be old, but he can still pick a trustworthy VP.

If Bernie runs next time, he's going to have it a helluva lot harder. Last time, he justified his deathbed conversion to the Democrats by claiming that he'd always caucused with them, etc -- instead of saying what he really meant, that he chose a party because he knew it'd give him a better shot at the presidency and he didn't give a fuck about the Democrats (which is why the leadership was entirely in the right to go out of their way to block him) -- but what's he going to do now? He quit the Democrats after losing and, once again, is an independent. The guy is a fucking snake and an opportunist, pure and simple. (And that's overlooking the fact that, despite working in politics nearly all his life, his knowledge was on par with Ben Carson's when it came to a lot of subjects including foreign policy.)

More so, a lot of the momentum he had the first time around will be gone and, as everybody notes, he'll be even older.

Jen sez
I don't think any of those people will be the candidate.

Out of them, only Elizabeth Warren seems plausible. Goofy Elizabeth Warren has been growing in profile and can tap into the same base as Bernie while being less likely to alienate moderates. Biden, while an otherwise strong candidate, is hitting age issues although he would benefit from tapping into Obama nostalgia.

Well, socialism is all fun and games until you run out of other peoples' money =p As for some of those far-left liberal-progressive nations people love to talk about, Sweden -- which, by the way is adored by Bernie just as he once loved Cuba and Venezuela -- is also having a lot of problems these days, including hand grenade attacks.

By the end of the race his popularity exploded within a specific demographic. The fact that the demographic in question was also the one that shouts loudest on the Internet and social media gives the impression that overall support for him was far stronger than it really is. And like it or not, had he bypassed Hillary, HER supporters likely would have turned against him and anti-voted him in precisely the same way a fair number of his supporters did to her. He would have lost to Trump exactly the same way she did, though the specific results and specific votes wouldn't have been precisely the same.

Next election he'll be older and have even more baggage, and the demographic that was supporting him last time are fickle as fuck. Add in the fact that pretty much everyone is going to position themselves to be the "hero" to save the US against Trump, and will adopt the same sort of PR tactics successfully used in the last election, and Bernie loses a lot of what made him a viable candidate last time in the first place.

If he tries to push for a nomination and actually succeeds (whether for the whole shebang or simply jsut a significant spot in the primaries), he likely helps guarantee Trump gets reelected (sort of in the same sense that Democrats have always hated Nader and the Green Party and felt that they always help Republican candidates win by dividing the Left).

GRTooCool posted...

I'd argue the US is ready for a female President. Just not THAT female. Because a large segment of the population already hated her for decades long before she ever ran, and she always comes across like a bit of a slimy piece of shit.

Ironically, in the election that was basically run on saying "Fuck business as usual!", she was probably the most "Business as usual" candidate running.

And even then, she still had a CHANCE (albeit not a great one), until the potion of the Left disillusioned by Bernie losing turned against her (which was something that horrified Bernie, and which might help discourage him from trying to run again next time).

The Democrats are being handed the greatest opportunity they've had in years to take the White House from the opposition without much of a struggle - IF they nominate the right candidate. But the last time they were in a position like this, they got complacent, nominated John Kerry, and wound up with "FOUR MORE YEARS".

So no matter how much of a slam dunk some people think next election is going to be, they may be in for some bitter disappointment if the Democrats don't start coming up with some better options fast.

Well, it looked like it was an easy win against Trump the first time, too >_> Honestly, the country has a pretty strong tendency towards incumbency even after crappy first terms. That said, he might always decide not to go for re-election. After all, he's not a traditional politician and he is getting up there in the years.

My first thought when they tried to go with Hillary was "Good lord, I don't want the first female president to be HER"

I think they had to be way too smug and arrogant and thought the time was perfect for a woman and there was no way it would fail. So they didn't even try to find someone people like.

Right now I think it would be extremely foolish for the Democrats to put anything but a white man against Trump. Now is not the time for pushing equality. Now is the time to give people the least amount of reasons to dislike the candidate. Ugly but realistic. I'm not sure they're that smart though.
